I agree with that 100%. Asking someone to fix the OL in 1 season is unreasonable. There was just too much going against them.

But I’ve seen some OL units with just as little depth and talent at least scrap together 5 guys who can put a body on a body consistently, even if they were getting whipped or couldn’t maintain blocks. Being disappointed that our $800,000 OL coach couldn’t at least get 5 guys to blow assignments less frequently isn’t unreasonable either.

But it’s a moot point now. IMO some level of offensive staff dysfunction was pretty clear for most of 2018. We’ll have a much better OC and a (modestly) better situation on the OL for Friend to work with in 2019. His track record shows that improvement up front should be a safe bet.
I agree, but I just don't understand how people think the problem is Friend..I mean his reputation as a teacher in unimpeachable. The guy knows his craft. He is therefore obviously not the problem imo. I too have seen guys scrap together mediocre OLs out of less, but it is an indictment of what was left to him that he wasn't able to get at least mediocre production from that group.

I think that Kennedy going down, and Trey's illness leaving him way behind vastly exacerbated the issues. I really think the narrative would have been different if those two things had not happened.

I would also add that it is not too early in Will Friends career to admit he is a very good OL coach, he is a well established very highly regarded OL coach, and he didn't just forget how to coach OL when he signed his name on a Tennessee contract. Everybody except for a few dumb jerks on VN knows it. The guy is good period...the problem is not him.

He is getting some good talent coming in, and it will take us taking some more lumps before that talent is ready to be dominant.

We need the forbearance, patience and common sense to see it through.
Friend has a great track record that should give us reason for optimism. He was in a bad spot because of the guys he had to coach last year and the OC he was working with/for.

But at the end of the day, the OL was way too terrible in way too many facets of the game for the 2018 season not to reflect on Friend to some extent. I’m sure he’d agree that ultimately the unit’s production falls on him and we’ve got to do better in 2019.

I think having an OC with experience and an OL with a better blend of talent, experience, and strength means that we should see a return to normalcy for Friend’s unit this year (obligatory TWSS)

Hey Newt...Have you ever been trout fishing in the Northern Rockies? I was looking at our pics from last years trip to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone and thought of you. The cabin we stayed in outside Yellowstone was on Henry's Lake Idaho..just a beautiful spot and awesome trout lake.
Yeah when i lived in Jackson Hole i fished the Snake a lot. I also lived in Great Falls Mt when i was a kid and trout fished every weekend along the Missouri and its trubutaries.
