That's certainly one angle, to make her the face of the party.

Another angle, and one that doesn't make as much sense to me but I've seen it happen before, is that you only incessantly talk about and criticize those who you think pose a threat to you. The left did the same thing with Sarah Palin, even after she was a VP candidate. I'm not sure why the left was so concerned about Palin, and I'm not sure why the right is so concerned about AOC. Palin was/is a dingbat and AOC is very green and inexperienced. Notice the right did not come after Ron Paul until he decided to run for President and did well in some of the very early polling. He has said the same things for years and years, but nobody cared until what he was saying started to be taken up by a larger audience.

If I'm a Republican, I'd be hesitant talking about AOC at every opportunity. Her ideas and proposed policies are definitely outside the mainstream, but ideas and policies don't matter. She does have an image that is/can be appealing to a wider mass of people, especially Millennials, and if someone appears relatable, you might be more likely to support their ideas.
