Swinney is a very good coach and is amiable to finding someone who can improve his team/staff. His major turning point was hiring Chad Morris, who installed the system they run and turned them into an offensive juggernaut. Morris also was the factor in getting guys like Watson to commit. The new OCs did well learning from Morris and keeping the system rolling. They are also excellent recruiters and the reason guys like Higgins are playing there instead of here. Dabo does well keeping assistants, Morris is his only major defection. Venebles keeps getting mentioned for HC jobs but people keep hiring Saban assistants instead.
Agreed, coaching stability with quality assistant coaches is a key element in Clemson's success. I think Swinney has developed a culture there were the assistant coaches want to stay for a while. I am not sure the same is true at Alabama and it might finally be catching up to them.
On a similar note, if you look at most of the over-performer teams that tend to have recruiting classes outside the top 25, yet end up ranked in the top 10-15 AP poll, like Oklahoma State, Michigan State, TCU, etc, they all have good coaches and established coaching stability.
