i think he does have a lot to learn in that regard. i did the day he took the job.

i think the good news is he's apparently pretty "coachable", cause he hasn't made some knee jerk reaction, and by the accounts i've seen, has taken every bit of advice given to him about this search, and is purposefully not rushing, despite having some things happen that he probably didn't want or expect to happen. if you believe ATLvol, things were pretty much there with Yurcich until OSU came calling. so that's not good news to see the guy you pretty much has your sights on, disappear before you get started.

in years past, when that happened, we just go until someone says yes. and we get Dooley or Jones.

things haven't gone like they wanted, i don't think there's much doubt in that at this point. but they haven't rushed in to something, and until they make a hire, and we see how the product looks at some point, there's really no reason to be upset, except that waiting sucks and not knowing is scary.

which is an "us" problem. not a Pruitt/Fulmer problem. yet, anyways.

Fulmer knows what he's doing at least as far as running the football program goes. If Jeremy really takes his counsel seriously, he'll be fine (assuming he ends up making the right hire).

There is a point in this whole process, though, where the benefit of extended deliberation dwindles considerably, and the cost of waiting begins to dramatically increase. I think that point fast approaches, but we'll see where it goes.

I was on the early 2000s version of it when I was an undergrad and first started following recruiting.

I was somewhat fascinated by Tennstud’s posts.

Was TennStud the one who wrote the GOAT post about him and his grandpa listening to Vols games on the radio on the front porch? Does anybody have that post handy?

i agree. i don't think anyone would think it wise to get in to the new semester, getting the early enrollees, returning players back in to the building and not have an OC on board by that point.

i think the trip to San Antonio will be good, and i'd imagine we'll probably see this thing come to a close in the next few days....

I appreciate you engaging in good faith and not mistaking me for Catbone.

I've always had the sense that Pruitt was way more of a pure football coach and salesman than a program manager, but had hoped he had picked up some of that from his time with Saban. This search has made me somewhat nervous that he still has a lot to learn in that respect.

You make some good points. Pruitt's a pure football coach. Running a large, high-profile program is a big job and involves a lot of things Pruitt doesn't really like to do. Fulmer has taken some of that responsibility off Pruitt's shoulders so he can focus on the team and recruiting. But ultimately the HC at a program like UT has to keep a lot of balls in the air. He has to hire people he trusts and let them do their job so he can do his. I think he's still learning how to do that.

Search is kind of playing out a lot like South Carolina last yr. muschamp was looking for an upgrade. Talked to a lot of people and felt the better option was his own staff member. Peoople laughed. Now they aren't laughing. Could be same thing here. People could laugh at first but let's hope they aren't when it's gametime

I'm not saying it has been an efficient search or that we should feel great about it. But we have a rookie HC facing a steep learning curve who's feeling his way. He made a mistake with his first OC, got bailed out and needs to get it right the second time. His offensive philosophy seems to be shifting-- and that's a good thing. He needs to figure out what he wants before he can hire the right guy to execute it. And to be the right guy, the new guy needs to integrate seamlessly into an established staff without being Shooped.

And yeah, when you hire a coordinator as a first-time HC at a program like UT, there's going to be growing pains. And when you throw him into the deep end of a rebuild....
We were in negotiations with yurcich. You know he’s interested in Ohio state...maybe we could’be sweetened our deal to him. I said maybe we could’ve or not but we entered negotiations with him and struck out. Either way you’re 0-1 from that regard.
So just go get the OC from UTC so you don't strike out? Public perception and the media takes are the only thing that matters?.....No, do everything you can to get the BEST that you can. There is not a magic wand that insures success especially one that you have to wave as quickly as possible to make it more successful....edit...not sure why LA's post is attached.

I think he def wanted Yurcich. As we have seen with some of his recruiting, sounds like he slow played the issue of trying to hire him and in comes OSU.

From what we know I think it’s equally likely that Yurcich slow played us, knowing he might get a look from Ohio State. If the guy takes $400k less for a lower position then he clearly wants to be at the other place more. Not much you can do about that.

Not saying they are clueless at all. But 40 days in does make it seem alarming. I want them to hire the right guy and feel like they should have been able to establish that person by now.
they did. has already been stated...had Yurcich in their sights, and right before the trigger got pulled, OSU spooked him, and he ran home to mama.

you can be upset there wasn't a back up plan, but really, at that point, and how long we had been at this already, i have a feeling they probably felt really good about where they had arrived.

now is the time for prudence, not panic. it didn't work out with Yurcich. you don't overreact just because. that's how we got Dooley. he said "yes", and we got a coach...yea.....

Lol

Nice rewrite, Mushchamp knew McClendon was about to get hired as an OC and elevated him to keep him.

And if Chaney is gone, I wouldn't be surprised if Georgia goes after him.
