Column: This is the Reality of the Vols' OC Search | Rocky Top Insider

SIAP. Bottom line, Vols are beggars when it comes to finding an OC willing to accept the roster limitations, tough SEC competition, and Friend situation. At least we can spend some ca$h.
A lot of this is self inflicted in hiring a first time coach who made a wrong hire, and then that same coach deciding to limit his choices further.

There are only so many offensive geniuses that have coached in the state of Bama.

Especially true with kids at the FBS level. They're all used to being studs. Many of them were good enough to single-handedly win state championships for their teams. Then they come in and either lose their confidence due to riding the bench or due to being stuck in a program with an incompetent coach. Very difficult to get those kids back on track. You've only got them for 4-5 years, and most of the time they're already juniors or seniors by the time a coaching change is made, and they've seen the program start to spiral downward. Gotta start fresh with new recruits most of the time.

Agreed

Failure is something they are used to dealing with.

I agree with u, Sweetness would be my pick, too. I think Payton translates better than all the other RBs listed, in today's NFL. He was a great receiver and although not quite as explosive as Sanders, he wouldn't have near as many negative yardage plays as Sanders.

If anyone nails who the hire is, it’s probably gonna be purely by accident.

Side rant:

I'm working late and there's a cube-mate two desks down who's working while being on a personal call. "Pick so-and-so up from practice"; "Did so-and-so go to Kroger yet".. she's been yapping for like a half hour now. She's really sweet but shitwow I'm so tired of hearing everything about her personal life. My ears are tired of wearing earbuds. It's after hours, I just want to enjoy the silence and get some stuff done, because it's NEVER this quiet, but it's her that's screwing it all up. Figure it tf out and end the dang call already. Holy.

Ask her to sleep with you under the desk like George Costanza

I am cool with Pruitt taking his time but dragging this out only to pick an internal candidate, or to scrape the barrel for a last resort choice seems crazy.

Kerwin Bell please. K thanks. If he ends up killing it at USF I will remind everyone regularly. YW.

not that I think Rocky Top Insider is super incredibly sourced or anything but this is a lot closer to the truth than we want to admit.

Don’t understand the Friend stuff, is he a great coach? Probably not, but he is being portrayed as the fat girl at the bar with too much facial hair. Sure you probably could do better but she isn’t Caitlyn Jenner. I think he is a solid coach

I usually find myself rooting against Bama, but not against Clemson, especially the last 2 years. I really don't won't Rodgers and Higgins to get a ring.

I really loved Charlie Garner, man. I was too young and uninterested to remember him in Tennessee Orange, but I first started getting into sports in 2000-2001 ish. My favorite NFL team is a Titans-Raiders tie, so needless to say Garner was one of my early favorite RB's.

This statline from Garner's 2002 campaign is still one of my favorites of all time, just because dude was so consistent and unpredictable.

182 carries, 962 yards, 5.3 ypc, 7 TDs
91 receptions, 941 yards, 10.4 ypr, 4 TDs

The only reason he didn't have more TDs is because they were evenly spread between Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, and Jerry Porter (who was a total disappointment along with the rest of the team from 2003 onward)..

I wonder how dangerous Charlie Garner would be had he graduated from Tennessee in recent years. 91 effing catches. 91. Stupid.

Meh, I don’t hold any grudge against Tee, TL or Amari, I hope they all dominate Monday. F Bama

It is tough watching Clemson tho

You are one step closer to being a Communist with that line of thinking. It is never appropriate to pull for the roll d*amn tide even if they are playing a prison squad led by Burt Reynolds

I can root for them over Alabama. Seeing the sh!tshow we became since Butch's house of cards toppled, I can't blame Rodgers/Higgins one iota for being able to see through the BS.

I, absolutely love Charlie Garner at UT. He only played 2 seasons here because he was a JUCO, but had over 2000 yards in rushing in those 2 years, not counting bowl games and sharing carries with Little Man and Hayden. Amazing

I don’t think he would have been a bad hire in December and I still technically don’t think so now. But to drag this thing out for 40 days then hire him? That screams no one would take the job.
