It was Christmas 1977. I was onboard a fast attack submarine a few miles off the coast from the port of Vladivostok. It was still the Cold War and our mission was to track the comings and goings of the Soviet submarine fleet based at the port. I was 21 years old and most of my fellow submariners on watch in the engineering spaces that Christmas Eve night were pretty much the same age, give or take a year or so.

Our watch shift was four hours long and all of us that could gathered around Maneuvering (control room) and I think we sang Christmas carols for the entire shift. We may have sang every song in the book, some probably twice. It obviously wasn’t my best Christmas but it was memorable nonetheless and as usual for almost everyone, only because of those you share it with.

To one and all who gather here, I wish for you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a joyous and prosperous happy New Year and a special shout out to all those who can’t make it home for the season, especially our men and women in uniform. May God bless you all, everyone.

Fair winds and following seas, shipmate!

I never had to spend a Christmas out to sea, but I did spend my first Navy Christmas at Naval Station Great Lakes. My boot camp division started 2 weeks before Thanksgiving and went through Christmas and my 21st birthday before ending at the end of January. It may not have been the best Christmas, but I’ll always remember it.

Merry Christmas to you and your family and all of VolNation.

Pretty sure you aren't alone in underestimating 151

I generally only have about one drink a month. If in the US at a family gathering, I may have 2 at a party. On this afternoon, I thought I would have the extremely rare 3 since it was early afternoon. It happened to be 151. I just got real quiet and had to focus hard when it came to walking.
