The Volunteer State is producing more players than ever before. Tennessee’s facilities are great. The fanbase is as fanatical and loyal as any. The University itself enjoys more academic regard than ever before in its history.
But beating out SEC rivals for talent has never been harder.
When Phillip Fulmer was racking up wins with future NFL talent in the 90’s, LSU was bad, Alabama was struggling, Auburn was inconsistent, Georgia was couldn’t figure out who they were and Clemson was 6-5 every year. It was Tennessee and Florida battling Florida State for the region’s best.
In addition to winning in the living rooms in the SEC footprint, Tennessee made hay outside of the south in states like Oklahoma because the Sooners were irrelevant. Later, Fulmer made hay in California because USC was a trainwreck.
Fulmer was also recruiting to a school that had been winning when he got the job. Tennessee won the SEC in 1990. They had landed Heath Shuler in a widely-followed recruitment. In the four years before Peyton Manning arrived, Tennessee was 37-10-2 and were 22-7-1 in the SEC.
Compare that to the last 10 seasons (2009-18) where the Vols have won 25 SEC games. All the while, Georgia and Alabama have become playoff teams. LSU consistently produces more NFL talent than any other school, unless that school is Clemson.
South Carolina, Missouri, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State have consistently been better than Tennessee over the last decade. Heaven forbid in the Vol psyche, but one could even say the same thing about Memphis in the last five seasons.
Now, that doesn’t mean Tennessee can’t get back.
But to do so, the Vols need stability. It’s why Craig Fitzgerald staying as strength coach was the biggest commitment the Vols landed on Wednesday. In addition to some stability, they need some success. Fading the last two weeks of the regular season didn’t help. They also need some reality — the reality that they aren’t going into Alabama or Georgia and consistently beat those teams head up for players. It’s why their evaluations must be spot on and they do have to win in other states.
But they do have to win some of those head-to-head battles against their rivals and that’s why the need some guys to step out front and center, be a Vol and be the best recruiters on the Vol staff. It’s why Wayna Morris’ signature is so important. It’s why Morris being here this January is vital, because he can be around every recruit. It’s why Harrison Bailey has to be the face of the 2020 class that recruits like a mad men on behalf of the Vols.
