That had more to do with players than plays. Statistically, the offense was better than it was in 2017...The only reason Pruitt go involved in the offense and pulled Helton to the sideline was because the offense was a dumpster fire. Any other reasoning is ridiculous. If we were putting 35-40 up a game Helton could have sat in the blimp for all Pruitt cared. Now move on to something else.
There’s a difference between Helton badmouthing UT and honestly answering questions about his experience at UT. If OC candidates ask him about working with Pruitt, the state of the rebuild, the talent he had to work with, the group dynamics of the staff, the pressure/hours of the job and the grind of the SEC, he should give candid answers. Anybody unwilling to deal with the reality of the situation or what it takes to fix it isn't the right guy for the job. It's better all around if they find that out upfront.
Agreed. So all this poor little OC that was being abused after promising he could do whatever he wanted is ridiculous. The only reason Pruitt go involved in the offense and pulled Helton to the sideline was because the offense was a dumpster fire. Any other reasoning is ridiculous. If we were putting 35-40 up a game Helton could have sat in the blimp for all Pruitt cared. Now move on to something else.
I don't want to believe that there is trouble because I don't think this team can stand another two years and a sh!t show again. The Knoxville press is not our friends (except for during Schiano for the most part--besides Hyams)_The timing of these reports are not well thought out. A big recruiting weekend, and this is the story that the guys want to put out on the airwaves? Is the media lashing out because they are not getting access?
I don't believe Helton is running a smear campaign against UT. Fulmer helped Helton and his family into a good situation and made it a smooth transition, and I think there's mutual respect there. But the UT OC job isn't easy and the reality of the situation is going to weed out guys who can't thrive in that type of intense environment. And that's a good thing. Another unhappy OC would be a bad thing.
Ironically, it seems that Pruitt is now changing up the offense to what Helton wanted it to be all along.
Read it. Doesn't look to me like it was anything new or more than stuff I've seen posted on here. I'm telling ya, most of his "sources" just peruse message boards and have a few people "in the know" who aren't all that well connected but can get morsels of info at times.Worth noting that Basilio's blog (specifically his source "Orange Throat") this morning also was saying that people are calling Helton and he is perhaps not giving the most flattering description of what it's like to work under Pruitt. That doesn't mean it's true, it means that someone is out there spreading this line to more than just VQ to get it out into Knoxville media.
Also notes that potential OC hires are asking Helton about what kind of talent he left behind on offense, and that may be the most discouraging answer of all. All the more reason we need to bring home some big fish recruiting targets on offense this class to make the job more attractive.
It probably didn't help that his brother had a rough year too. I am sure they had a few discussions over that.He was promised that he could run his offense with no interference and that promise (along with the pay) resulted in him taking a pay cut and basically making a lateral move from a job standpoint. But he was not allowed to run the offense he wanted, and instead was forced to run some mix of what Pruitt wanted and what Will Friend wanted. When the offense struggled as a result of 1) the mixed messages and 2) operating a power running system without the personnel for it, Pruitt attacked him for it instead of backing off and allowing him to run his offense.
He was then pulled from the booth - where he preferred to coach - so that Pruitt could more closely watch him and “keep an eye on him” and the plays he was calling. Again, that’s not how you treat another adult/peer you hired to do a job.
The public tongue lashings were the last straw. He was embarrassed - as any of us would be - and didn’t like being the scapegoat.
He was going to do whatever it took to get out of here after the season. It just so happens he fell forward into a head coaching job.
If he tells a high candidate like briles or yurcich that’s wants to do their own thing on offense that Pruitt won’t let them then that could explain some of the struggles right now (if they are there)
It's a Bobo Friend offense IMO.I don’t know ultimately if Tyson Helton is a good offensive coordinator. But what I know as an absolute fact is the offense we saw this season is not Tyson Helton’s offense.
