ESPNU talking heads believe Freeze to UT

Bama isn’t going to drop Enos IMO
it's pretty common knowledge that saban wanted to hire him last year, and couldn't. that in the time they did get to spend, they took concpets from him and implemented them this year with Tua and the offense. Saban's opinion of Freezes offensive mind is pretty high.

so, if Locksley gets the MD job.........and Freeze is still available, i don't think Saban would favor enos over Freeze in that scenario.

still dominos to fall here, so you cant' say one way or the other right now. Locksley interviews Sunday for MD job. no idea on what kind of timeline MD is on for naming their next HC.

My point was not to get over it. It was that you don't pay a guy a premium who has baggage.
Why not? Someone is going to. So, sure, you don't pay him head coach money, but $1.6 mil as a coordinator isn't otherworldly, even for a guy with baggage if he carries Freeze's resumé. It puts him near the top of highest paid coordinators, but if not for the baggage, he'd be making $5 million as a HC somewhere else. So, $1.6 mil and the "demotion" to OC is factoring in the baggage.

I absolutely love the fact that it still bothers some of you the way it does. You don't even know if that's what dude meant but.....but but but. Lol.

It doesn't bother me at all. It makes our fan base and some posters on this board look extremely gullible but I could care less.

I'm not sure why so many people are worried about him "only being here 2 years." If that happens, we will have had a great 2 years. We need to bring in coordinators who are head coach caliber to get this team better. Then, when he leaves, other really good OC candidates will see this is a great launching point for their career and want to be here as well, ie Bama.

If we offer Freeze I say that he comes. Tennessee is a better fit for him than Bama. If Freeze comes in a and makes our offense better quick then he cements himself as being even more legit. Bama’s Coordinators make you wonder if they are good coaches or if it’s just auto pilot coaching the best players in the nation.

I agree. Have a solid two years, he will help recruit some good kids and the OC job will me desirable for the next guy.

Of course, the negative recruiting against Freeze from other schools to recruits (or their Mama's) would be at a high level

I think there is some truth to this. How many former Bama OCs have parlayed success as Bama's OC into successful HC careers? Kiffin has fallen back to earth this season at FAU. McElwain busted at Florida after mild success at CSU. Daboll took an almost lateral move to Buffalo as OC for the Bills. Major Applewhite has done well in Houston, but toiled as a position coach and then OC at Texas, and again at Houston before landing the HC job. Doug Nussmeier has bounced all over since leaving and is currently the TE coach for the Cowboys.

Now Freeze is different from all those guys because he has already been a successful HC in the SEC. He doesn't really need to prove his worth as a coach. He merely needs to prove he has reformed his past behavior. He is more likely to make a standout impact that he can parlay into another HC job at Tennessee than he could at Bama, where apparently, just about anyone can steer that offensive ship.

i don't wnat a one and done, but you don't hire a hugh freeze under the premise it's going to be a long term deal. and that's fine. great programs have coaching turnover these days. but if you have a desirable program, a good culture, clear communication and accountabilities, it creates an environment where you can promote from with in, and still attract good coaches from the outside. Bama, Clemson, OSU and some others have had some success doing this over the years, and i think with how we've built up our analyst staff, that's the direction we're working in. so the faster we can have the desireable product, the better our chances of acheiving that.....
Of course, the negative recruiting against Freeze from other schools to recruits (or their Mama's) would be at a high level
i'm sure that's been a point of consideration in this process............

So what happens to Maurer now that Bailey has committed? I know Maurer is 2019 and Bailey is 2020, but wouldn't you be a little miffed if you were Maurer?

It will all work itself out.

IE. We had Dominique Stevens, Jamaal Lewis, Travis Henry & Travis Stephens. Dominiques moved to linebacker. Travis Stephens red shirted. Jamaal declared for NFL after junior season.

Leak, Shafer & Ainge. Leak couldn't learn play book and was benched. Shafer fought someone over a girlfriend issue and then Ainge got the starting job.

Helton, Colquitt, Stewart & Manning were all on the team at once. Colquitt was injured. Helton was injured. Manning won the job over Stewart.

Having both Maurer & Bailey is a very, very good thing. More competition for the job....

We paid Tyson freaking Helton $1.2 mil. Why wouldn't pay someone with Freeze's resumé $400K more?
Helton shouldn’t have ever been paid that much money with his resume. I love coach Pruitt and I think he’s the guy to bring the vols back to championship form but the Helton hire was a huge red flag

In hindsight, you are probably correct. I think the appeal of landing USC's OC may have caused JP to overpay Helton. At the same time, Helton was behind the 8-ball because of our lack of talent on the line, and what I believe to be subpar QB play.

JG is tough as nails and I know he has his truthers amongst us, but for my taste, he is too slow at making decisions, unwilling/unable to run when needed, and just not a special talent at the most important position on the field. He could probably go to Bama or Ohio State, and they could mask his deficiencies. We were unable to do that because of the talent level around him.

I would have been interested to see what Helton could have done over 4 years time with the same group of guys and bringing in his own players. I'm not convinced he's awful as an OC...awful playcallers don't typically land HC jobs as the first call. Im also not convinced he's a special coach, either, so the verdict is still out on him. I do agree that we didn't get our money's worth, I'm just not sure it was entirely Helton's fault.
