Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Mack was able to gain the support of some big hitters in the Rams Club and pitch bringing back Chiz along with a top OC to Cunningham. He is great with people and will unite the boosters to support the program, a la a politician. Fedora was weak in this area.

Name to watch for UNC at OC is Kevin Wilson. Played at UNC, was head coach at Indiana and currently OC at Ohio State.

Yea but he stopped having recruiting success late in his tenure at texas and that’s maybe the easiest place to recruit at. He will actually have to work at UNC to get guys.

Darren Mcfarland is no source I would trust when it comes to UT news.

However I did find this nugget when it comes to getting past the SEC to allow him back.

"Without the new bylaw, Freeze could have been roaming the sidelines next to Saban in Tuscaloosa this fall. It's certainly what Saban was hoping for when he reached out to Freeze about a co-offensive coordinator position on his staff.
However, the SEC preferred Freeze lay low for at least another year and it looks increasingly likely it will get its wish as he is still out of coaching."

He’s the associate head coach, had been OC at Arky and HC at Central Michigan. Locksley is likely the new Maryland HC and Enos will be moved up.

There’s no reason for him to come here. He’s more likely to get a HC job as the associate head coach at Alabama than the OC at Tennessee running a struggling offense.

Yea if he moves up to OC then he'd be a fool to come here

And today?
Pruitt/Dave & Busters: “Get job?”
Helton/Dairy Queen pay phone: “Yeppers!”
Pruitt/Dave & Busters bathroom stall: “Aight...cool.”
Helton/Cricket wireless phone: “Laters!”

Next move for Helton, do not pay out $800 k...do not go home to Knoxville

Good chats all around. 😎

I agree (as I’ve said). We’re not likely to make him pay it because it seems like Pruitt was probably ready to move on and this is the best possible way (in terms of optics) for that to happen, so UT would want to do everything possible to facilitate WKU hiring Helton.

This vitriol toward Helton has taken focus off the defense, which gave up 88 points to Mizzou and Vandy. We lost those games by 58 points. The Vols didn't do well on offense or defense. And defense had the experienced players-- four SR starters on the DL and three of our best JRs in Bituli, DTaylor and Warrior. Big picture-- there's plenty of blame to go around.

I'm all in on Hugh Freeze if we can make it happen. He's a proven winner and play caller. Recruited great (just got a little outside the lines at times, but would be held in check here... Wouldn't be the decision maker).

I think it's a great opportunity to bring a good mind in here. Pruitt is going to attempt to bring in great talent whenever possible.

I also think Joe Osovet is a sleeper candidate if Freeze or any other big name falls through. Seems like Pruitt may want to get him an on field job first, but maybe not. He was a head coach at the Juco level for years. Paid his dues behind the scenes this year. He's a seasoned guy that knows what he wants to run. If Pruitt believes in him thats good enough for me.

Would be similar to James Franklin giving Joe Moorehead his OC opportunity. That paid off for everybody.

He's a sharp and impressive guy. If he's the move, that would mean we are all in on the RPO life. Which wouldn't be a bad thing imo. He basically invented what he calls the Bolt Offense.

HIGH SPEED SPREAD FOOTBALL: The BOLT Offense

I'm on board for either Freeze or Osovet.

I'm sold on Osovet but one caviat...JG cannot run RPO's. No way in hell.

I'd have more confidence in Osevet's potential than Friend, that's for sure. That said, Freeze or Enos please.

I do not disagree, but you also have to remember that football is purely a bonus in Chapel Hill. Their fans are happy as long as the team is competitive and can fill up the stadium for big games. They want stability and Mack is a guy their fan base can get behind.

Mack with the right staff can beat out NC State/Duke/Wake for enough instate talent to be 8-4 type of team. UNC's brand is much stronger. The Coastal side of the ACC in football is an absolute disgrace.

Agree, but... the offense didn’t help the D out much, and Lock and Shurmur are both good QBs who had some of their better games against us (in Shurmur’s case, almost certainly the best game of his career). (And by good games, I mean perfect throws even when the coverage was there.)

Papaw Phil hates Bama with a passion. Rev Freeze has beaten Bama twice. I wouldn't be so sure that we won't try.
The difference between us and Bama isn’t going to be bridged by hiring Hugh Freeze. He’s good but he ain’t the only hire that can beat them.

They’ll prioritize consistency and remaining in the same system - which is why Friend makes sense.

One thing I have learned in life is to beware of people who offer simple solutions to complex problems and the TN football program is a complex problem. There is plenty of blame to go around and plenty of improvement that needs to happen in almost every area of the program.

The reality is that a new OC won't fix the offensive problems over night, but that in addition to better S&C and more experience, competition, and accountability will all work together to make things better.

Same can be said for the defense too.

I think Dan Enos runs the type of offense that Pruitt likes. He also has SEC play calling experience and is a good QB coach. If he'll come, thats a far better hire than Friend.
