Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Tennessee is moving up in all of our sports programs. Just look at what is happening across the campus with sports. Football is gonna make major strides under Pruitt and just look at soccer, volleyball, basketball, track and field, softball, baseball and golf. They're all in a major upswing. For years, Vanderbilt got the best baseball prospects and golf prospects coming out of Tennessee. That trend has stopped. Our golf coach just had two major recruiting hauls from Tennessee kids. He just signed the #1 and #2 prospects from Tennessee this year. Vanderbilt always got those players before Fulmer hired Coach Webb. Our baseball coach is doing the same thing. We're coming back and I believe we'll stay on top for a long time.

I don't know if the want to will be there, but he got stonewalled at the goaline on Schiano. The perception by the majority of fans and other influential people at UT was "Bad hire, bad fit, bad guy" and Haslem was the reason it almost happened. If Fulmer replaces that with a guy that fixes the program he'll have a ton of support from the fans to the majority of boosters. He may want to, may even try but a successful Pruitt and Fulmer will be darn near impossible to make that happen.

All the other stuff aside, everyone forgets that Schiano's record as a head coach is something like 57-58. I still can't believe he would be considered for any head coach position just based on his record alone.

"Vols fighting for Vandy's respect, reversing rivalry's 'embarrassing' skid"

Would you say this title triggers you guys?

Yes, yes, it does. It would take Vandy beating us close to 45 years straight for them to even tie up the series. While there is definitely an embarrassing skid (losing to them at all), we're not the ones fighting for their respect.

I think the fans at Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and LSU are just as bad if not worse. But for some reason there is the perception that Tennessee should be content with being a mediocre team.

^^This. Auburn is the best example since they aren't the 'flagship' university in their state and yet it's ok for them to have high expectations. They fight it out with UA, UGA, and us every year for recruits. We have access to as much, or more lately, homegrown HS talent as they do. That said, I think what bothers me most is that so many are geography blind. When it comes to recruiting, we're as close to home for many recruits as anywhere else. And even back when Fulmer was coaching we had little issue recruiting nationally -- it's something we've always done and something that is only now becoming a 'must do' for everyone else.

That said, where they do have a point is that it's hard to rebuild a team. The others haven't been torn to the ground the way we have so yes, it's going to be harder at first but there's nothing about the job that makes it inherently harder once that foundation is set. Put another way, had we made the right hire after Fulmer we wouldn't hear a peep about how hard the Tennessee job is. The only thing hard is rebuilding.
