I would put that decision pretty low on the reasons we lost this one. We were in position to recover (just like basically every onside Pruitt has called this year) but didn't execute. Now, I can see the argument being Pruitt has done this before and it hasn't been successful, so why keep calling it? That said, he plays to win, and the writing was on the wall in terms of our defensive performance after the first two drives.

Yea it wasn't a game deciding call I agree but the game did change greatly at that point

Imo Mizzu was at best 7-10 points better than us yesterday. Jg doesn't get hurt, no on side kick or we play flawless and we still lose by 7-10 imo

Exactly. We needed to find ways to steal possessions. Pruitt knew (like everyone else) that the defense was overmatched and ill-equipped to hold their offense down. We had to keep scoring with them and when the offense fell on its face again and again to start the game it was going to be a long night.

We didn’t protect the ball much like the Florida game but against a better team. I absolutely loved the onside kick call. Had we recovered and scored and just not blatantly turned the ball over so many times, it would’ve been a good game. I still think Missouri would’ve won because they were the better team and easily the second best team in the east this year.

Looks like we have three tight ends on our line. One of, if not the worst o lines in the power 5. Got news for everyone, they're probably not going to be a whole lot better next year. Both lines of scrimmage will again likely be weaknesses next year.

We will be much better on O line next year. Maybe not in the beginning of the season but by the end we will be far better than this year. We will have Kennedy back, we will have 2 to 3 freshman contributing/starting and the returning 5 will be bigger, stronger, and more motivated than this year, they know they will be riding the pine if they are not better. There is also a remote chance we will get Trey back, he is seeing specialists now.

The offensive line will be miles ahead next year, I am more worried about the defensive line.

We have won at least two more SEC games this year. Could be 3. That is progress. We were lucky to beat GT last year and GT was a bad team last year. We were a three win team last year. We all want it right now myself included but I have seen progress. Got some fun memories with my son to boot.
.

Wanted to leave my perspective this morning the day after.

If you don't think the game turned with the int before half, then you were not watching UT-Mizzou.

There were more than one play.

I'd argue the 3rd and 6 where we missed multiple tackles the first drive for them of the second half was another huge game
Changing play.

I shouldn't have to go into the specifics of that one play and it's influence on the game, so I'm not going to; you claim to know football, so you should be able the figure it out, and if you can't, you don't want to.

Imo you can't give them the ball for the 3rd time in a row with great field position. Especially when the momentum was so strong anyway. Our defense was playing great at that point and we finally got it going on offense. Just a weird crazy time to make that call

It was 9 whole yards. 25 to the 34. I wouldn’t call that great field position. 9 yards didn’t make our defense start playing bad. 9 yards didn’t deflate the team.

I know this is what you must do as the contrarian though. Sadly for myself the hook was too shiny.

Lol

Nobody is saying that cost us the game.

You see bad decisions don't always mean that's the reason a team wins or loses.

Haven't seen it mentioned but Heltons playcall when jg got hit was just plain ignorant. Play action isn't going to work and shouldn't even be in consideration on 3rd and 11 when you need the RB in pass pro

If we are looking for another game
Changing decision there is one
Indeed

Well, I’ve beaten this dead horse too much but some year, some coach, Tennessee is going to have to allow for a bumpy ride to get out of this rut. We can’t keep firing coaches every 3 or so years on our way to glory.

And top 10 classes are great but Mizzou shows year in and year out that you can win at least at a modest level with top 40 classes if you develop players well. We can get top 20 classes almost without effort. Just let Pruitt (or some future coach after years of misery) keep get top 20 classes and keep developing them and let this program stabilize.

There really are no quick fixes. We see that right in front of our eyes and we struggle to believe it.
I guess it depends on your definition of modest.
Missouri had 2 good seasons 13' and 14' since joining the conference in 12' where they won 23 games. Over the last 4 years they ve won 23 to date. They re 26-29 in the conference since joining. They re success in 13' and 14' was not continued because you cant win consistently in this conference without really good players.
You may stumble into a few here and there when the stars align perfectly (see UK this year) but they nor Mizzou will ever be a consistent 8 or 9 win team in a modest year recruiting what they do. You ll see the 4-6 win seasons more often.

Kirby went 7-6 with UGA yr 1 losing to Vandy and barely escaping Nichols st. We still can matchup that record. Doom and gloom is not necessary here. If we lose to Vandy then I will understand some negative feels for sure. Mizzu should be on a nice run if they didn't get screwed by refs vs Ky. They boatraced Florida at Florida and Florida didn't lose their QB drive 1

Probably best to not cling to the Kirby Smart analogy unless you want to set yourself up for disappointment if we don’t make the playoff next year.

Some people were clinging to the Butch Dabo analogy as Rome was burning.

Day after thoughts....

  • I'm guilty of dismissing the "bad match up." Basically any time we meet up with a QB like that, it doesn't bode well for this defense. Let alone when they have such a big offensive line that's loaded with upper classmen. That was ugly.
  • Not to be a jerk, but targeting or not the guy fumbled and we recovered and returned it for a score. It wouldn't have mattered as far as win/loss, but I don't know why that was ignored.
  • Also, couldn't/shouldn't the receiver have been called for offensive pass interference when he bumped Bryce Thompson on what otherwise likely would've been a pick six?
  • I don't want to be a "blame the ref" guy, because I'm not... but there were a lot of plays where the Mizzou runningback moved or jumped before the snap and false starts weren't called.
  • How is it Fil-Aimes has been back on offense for a month now and all we can do with him is the predictable jet sweeps?
  • What are we doing with Jeremy Banks? Has he even played since we moved him to LB and then back to RB?
  • I thought it was dumb not getting JT Shrout some snaps - even if just the hand offs at the end of the game. Would it have helped him in the future to see such insignificant live action? Probably not - but it wouldn't have hurt him either. Plus I was just sick of seeing Chryst in there at that point.
  • Speaking of, we saw yesterday why this coaching staff has stuck with JG, who isn't perfect by any means, as this teams quarterback. Not only the two horrible interceptions... missed DWA in the end zone, missed DWA wide open down the field, throws were high, a few hung up in the air. That said, his strike to Calloway was an impressive pass.
  • ... but the catch Calloway made was even more impressive. I think the kid goes pro at years end. Especially after a game where he gets banged up. He wants the NFL money anyways, but getting banged up yesterday probably gives him even more reason to go pro. I don't know what draft grade he'd likely get, but I'd say probably 3-5.
  • JG shouldn't have gone back into that game after that hit. He clearly looked concussed, or at least very dazed.
  • In Pruitt I trust, but I don't like some of the gambles he takes sometimes. I think all of our onside kicks this year can be questioned. I didn't think it was neccessary to go for two when he wanted to early in the third, either. I like aggressive play, and maybe I'm just bitching because none of them have worked.... idk.
  • Horrible game all around. Was this team reading its own clippings after last week? Thinking we turned some mythical corner? The offensive line looked as bad as they have at any point this year, and the front seven was embarrassing. I don't remember the exact situation but there was a fairly important third down, I think right after we scored to open the 2nd half, and Lock threw a dump off pass about 7 yards behind the line to gain, and we had guys rally to the ball and I'm yelling in my living room for a great stop..... and the Mizzou guy just runs through them for the first.
  • Can't really fault the secondary for yesterday.... maybe I should, idk. I do know that Lock, like Grier, was placing balls perfectly yesterday. Hard to defend that no matter what, especially with marginal pass rush.
  • Hate to be a debbie downer, but I seriously seriously seriously doubt we end up with a top 10 class. I think Wanya, Wright, Pappoe, and Gray are in, maybe even Trezmen Marshall, which is something to be excited about for sure. But no way do guys Pickens or Haselwood, or the other UGA commits come here after that. Same with probably Eboigbe - who seems to be pandering to fan bases on twitter anyways. And I know people are gonna say they'll come because last night showed they can start day one, but if starting day one was what these guys only cared about, there's a lot of **** colleges they could be talking to. They're all committed to perceived or real "winners" now for a reason. They want to win and compete for championships. We're at least 3-5 years away from that IMO.
  • Fortunately, I still like everyone in this class and think even potentially under ranked or under the radar guys like Clemmons and Burrell will be very good football players. More than that, I think this staff will maximize what each individual has.
  • Hoping beyond all hope we can pull out a win next week at Vandy. And I'll say this.... 2018 will be the last year in a long time we go into the Vandy's and Kentuckys and Mizzous hoping we can pull off an upset win.

I agree pretty much with all of this except the onside gambles and I think this staff needs a top 10 class. Young staff that’s new will make mistakes but these guys and CJP are suppose to be elite recruiters. They gave everything they need plus some with a good AD. Go get the players.

They need to get players that are SEC caliber and develop them. I don’t care what the class is ranked
