The QB Debate - post South Carolina (merged)

That's an excellent point. BTW, I remember being at the game in Starkville where Helton went down and they played Stewart & Manning. I sat at the Shoney's in Columbus after the game, proudly showing off my analytical skills by announcing that the Manning kid looked good but the Stewart kid, yeah he's the one. LOL
That one is probably part of my burnt brain cells but I do recall and hope never to forget Tn vs Al 94....while a loss, it was one of my best games experienced at Neyland !

I'm still burned up about the fact that the OL stood up pre-snap on Bama's go-ahead TD play, not called of course. Dang it! Ha

I was in Legion Field for the 93 & 95 games, where I watched in orange from the Bama student section. Fantastic experience for those of us who survived the Gump Meltdown.

I'm sorry but that is the craziest thing I have ever read on this site.... Callaway and Jennings constantly get 50/50 balls thrown to them because JG can't throw it to them in stride or throw them open.

Go watch the tape before you post some more nonsense like that. That's a grand excuse.
You seriously believe a guy with a cannon like JG is constantly underthrowing deep balls? There are throws that are meant to be laid out in front and throws that are intentionally hung up in the air so the receiver can high point the ball and go get it.

Yes. He’s thrown some good back shoulder throws for sure but a lot of touchdowns have been missed cause the receiver had to slow down. I’ve not seen him hit a deep ball in stride this year.

Actually I was a College QB. So yes I do know what I’m talking about. Unlike you. You never heard me say anything about being a guru or knowing more than anyone else. All I pointed out was the obvious regarding the drop back and release of the football. That is something every QB knows. If JG could get that down then he would be a heck of a QB. Oh, you forgot that KC was the starting QB at Stanford which is a pass happy school. He won games and then got hurt and someone else took over. That happens all the time. So yes, he has more experience and a better view of the position. The only reason he is starting is because of his running ability. Pruitt even said that. He also said that he needs to improve on his timing which is what I’m saying. Come back and talk when you know something about the position.

Stanford a pass happy school? Have you seen Chryst's stats at Stanford? Is that why JG has more career pass attempts than Chryst? Guess that makes Tennessee a pass happy school then too? One of the very thing that Vol fans wanna gripe about with JG (short passes) is what Chryst was known for at Standford. JG actually has a higher career yard per attempt than Chryst. JG is averaging almost a yard and half more per attempt that Chryst ever did at Standford. Also not every play is a 3 step drop and release. Heck I would bet half of JG's throw have honestly been immediate releases especially from shotgun. Not too mention the amount of swing passes and bubble screens we've ran. Neither of which are a 3 step drop and release. I'm not calling Chyrst trash or anything like that... but the delusional fans bashing JG and demanding Chryst have gotten out of hand.

Callaway and Jennings aren't running go routes past any db in the SEC with pure speed. Only way they beat anyone over top is if they shake em up or the db trips and that's just the truth. We're starting possession WR's right now and thats just what it is. Byrd is the only one getting snaps right now that has a shot of occasionally running past a db based purely on his speed. Everyone scream's for Chryst yet when it comes to arm strength JG is far superior.. and thats not coming from me... thats coming from ex vols and analyst that have followed them since fall camp began. It is what it is... You can't throw a receiver open on a deep ball by leading them if they aren't creating any separation from the db, hence the 50/50 balls where you let your big wideouts (Jennings, Callaway) go up and out fight the smaller db's.

I think your statement says a lot about your attitude, a real fan doesn't seek negative out of an article that was nothing but praise for a QB that has given everything to be the starting QB for UT and then some. Your insensitive remark only highlights your ignorance and shallow view of sports and its players. Free Speech all you want, but don't look like a dumb @$$ doing it.
My attitude is no different than thousands of people on here. I am ready for them to start winning. I understand it takes time but the last dominant team we had was 2001. Sometimes things are said tongue in cheek, which apparently is beyond your ability to discern, so I will dumb it down for you. The only person acting like a dumbass is you and your inane overreacting. So just go back to your fishing and STFU.

Exactly... I really don't get what people think they are watching out there.

Lol all you want. He may struggle with holding the ball, slow drops etc, but one thing he's got is a big arm.

You realize there is a difference between being able to throw the fade or streak in stride and just having a big arm right? Dormady has a cannon. Worley had a cannon. Yet, like JG, they couldn’t hit people in stride or throw a receiver open. I can’t believe you’re actually trying to argue that JG can throw a consistent deep ball when the only long completions he’s had are basically 50/50 balls where Jennings or Callaway have fought to high point the ball. You obviously don’t watch a lot of the games.

You obviously don’t follow much football because you can throw a receiver open on the deep ball even if there isn’t much separation. Yes, JG is a very efficient QB, but it is amazing seeing how many people come barking at his defense the minute someone criticizes even 1 tiny aspect of his game.

WORLEY HAD A CANNON!?!? Ok you've lost all credibility and your right to comment has been revoked. JG has thrown numerous deep balls exceptionally well. How many has he thrown and positioned where only Callaway could come down with it? He knows Callaway can get up... I can think of multiple throws where he's given Callaway a chance to come down with a reception even though he's covered because he's thrown it only where Callaway can come down with it. (Ex. against Florida when he put it up for Callaway to out jump the db in the back corner of the endzone.. which he did.. but then failed to follow through with the catch). Earlier in that game he threw a similar pass which Callaway who was covered went up and came down with it. You have to play and throw to the strength of your players. Our wideout's strength's are their size/strength... not speed.

This has nothing to do with defending Guarantano. You're completely misunderstanding the route concept. Chryst has made the same throw.

I agree you have to play to your receivers’ strengths. You also have to tailor your offense to minimize your QB’s weakness.

JG can’t throw a deep ball in stride. He’s yet to do it this year and the majority of deep balls he’s thrown have been 50/50 balls where the receivers went up and got it.

And yes, Worley did have a big arm but had very little accuracy. You clearly haven’t followed UT Football for a while if you can’t realize that. Everyone raved about his arm strength when he got forced into action his freshman year. He didn’t magically lose arm strength. It’s okay though, you aren’t the only person to follow the Vols when things are good or there’s a player to defend who can do no wrong.

Chryst has nothing to do with this. You said JG has a cannon of an arm, implying he throws a consistent deep ball. That’s not fact nor reality. Go back and watch the tape.

You've said this many times over the last two weeks. Tell me which throw... Also, give me ONE example, just one, of where Guarantano threw a ball as nice as the TD throw Chryst had to Murphy against UTEP and his TD throw to Byrd against Florida. Both were perfectly placed TD throws that LED the reciever and allowed them to run after the catch. Something Guarantano rarely does unless it's a short crossing route. That's being nice and generous too...

No... What I said was he has a big arm so it's ludicrous to suggest he's underthrowing because he just can't throw it out there.

So you’re saying he’s consistently thrown on target down the field? I hope you don’t answer yes because that’s far from reality

they either cant or dont want to understand this......so the stupidity will continue

Bro no no no stop. Worley never had a big arm. Let me repeat... Worley never ever had a big arm. Seriously go back and look at his recruiting profiles and multiple different recruiting sources. He was a 3 star that excelled at the High School level and had a very average arm. Like I'm not making this stuff up. Thats literally what his recruiting profile says. Yes he was a fairly highly sought after recruit but none raved about his arm strength.

Dormady didn't have a cannon and Worley DEFINITELY did not have a cannon. JG has a better arm than both of those guys. 50/50 ball or not, the ball has to be very well placed to give the receiver a chance to make a play on the ball. It is on the receiver to go up and make the play, but it is just as much on the quarterback to make an accurate throw that the receiver can make a play on.

Nowhere have I said that. What I've said is that after you see him hang up 5 balls high and outside to Callaway and Jennings, it becomes apparent that the way to throw them open deep is to hang it high where they can go get it.
