Bowl Game...Smole Game......Why

do I care about making a meaningless Bowl Game? Why would that indicate we had a glimmer of a successful season. The Bench Mark Bowl Game is 3 years from now.
The Vols playing against some hyphenated team in the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl means little. Few if any on here touting a Bowl Game would travel farther that Nashvegas to attend anyway. Anyone up for a trip to Shreveport?
The ONLY inkling of a reason would be additional practice time...……..and with the walking wounded we have on the Hill...…….I'm not sure that would help.
I want CJP to get his players on campus and let the real work begin. His grade card is a couple years away!
Everyone's got their opinion, but I think the entire opposite.
1. MOST importantly, underclassmen get basically another spring practice for development. For teams outside of top half dozen bowl games, this is the number one reason to participate in a bowl.
2. It does show progress that we did better than most thought early in the year. Progress, early on, when you're trying to build a consensus of momentum around the program, is of utmost importance.
3. Vol Fans will show, as we always do to post season games, and allows us to build our hope for a better year next year. We're well past the days of no one wanting to go to the Citrus bowl because it's "beneath us".
4. I almost guarantee you we'll make a bowl. Pruitt knows the importance, some reasons mentioned above, and will do all in his power to make for damn sure we win at least one more SEC game.

More positive exposure for program.
More MONEY for program.
More a reward for players and coaches hard work.
More positive Exposure to recruits.
More practice time for ALL players (additional month).

But other than that.......!?!?

.
BS BS BS
Check the numbers. They lose money going to a low Bowl. You would make more money staying at home and taking the Check for their cut from the SEC.

Really. Recruiting is better for going to Minor Bowl. No way. "I'm gonna sign with UT, cause I got a Poulan Weedeater T Shirt and Mug" Please!

Yes, additional Practice is the ONLY plus to playing a Minor Bowl.

This reason is enough. Rest of it can be argued to personal opinions, but most all fans would like to see UT play again in December, as opposed to not.

I will say it again....would you rather go to a bowl game, regardless of how big...or would you have another losing season? It’s that simple. You can whine all you want, but recruits don’t want to go to schools with losing records. Period.

You are flat out uniformed.

Doesn't say a damn thing on the IPAD they get, or under-armor shirts, or Nike shoes. One of the Patagonia backpacks did have the bowl name on there but it was a top of the line Patagonia and worth at least a bill. Recruiting does improve when you make a bowl due to exposure and it is tangible progression from going 4-8. If you don't have a clue what you are talking about you probably shouldn't voice your opinion, it confirms your ignorance.

Have you checked the numbers, or just repeating something you heard? Its okay to tell the truth, we already know.

I would bet if we have a losing season, we will lose more money than we would if we went to a bowl. Go check those numbers.

Top 10 reasons Tennessee needs to go to bowl game:

10. Rare chance to hear ESPN's No. 11 broadcast team.
9. Tennessee no longer participates in the life championship.
8. Shortens the off-season by a full month!
7. Tailgating at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday!
6. Pride of the Southland needs the exercise.
5. Autozone swag bags.
4. Practice? We talkin' 'bout practice.
3. Paul Bain says so.
2. There's like 80 of them. Somebody's got to play.

And the No. 1 reason Tennessee needs to go to a bowl game:

1. Increases CJP's chances of landing a whiteboard sponsorship.

A month of extra practice is the big thing.

You think JJ Peterson could benefit from a month of useless practice and a useless game?

So essentially what you’re arguing is “why play at all if you don’t make the playoffs?” LOL
Awesome troll bait congrats!!

Additional practice is huge in college football. The more time the coaches can spend with these guys the better they will become.

Ah, no. Thats not it.

Recruiting is about perception. The preseason perception is you have a new HFC (literally) taking over a 4 win team and a derailed inferno of a program. If he wins 6 or 7 the perception in recruiting and even with the players that are currently in the program is, whatever he's doing its working. Outside that he's selling an idea and not something you can tangibly see. He gets to 8 or 9 and a "better" bowl game (however that is defined) in year 2 and his recruiting will really take off heading into year 3.

If you don't care about "Minor Bowls" or meaningless bowls, you could literally argue that if you don't make the playoffs then it really doesn't matter. The only way he even has a chance to do that in year 3 or 4 is by making a positive step every season opening more doors to better players next year and the year after.

Your idea is that practice is the only positive to a better record is false.

What if we manage 8 or 9 this year? How awesome would that be...

Players want a bowl game as regardless of prestige of bowl they get bowl gifts. That 2011 team was super upset that Tyler Bray and Da'Rick Rogers gloated about not wanting to make the Music City Bowl again. So players love bowl atmosphere. And also while 6-6 isnt a great season 5 wins or less means losing record. Historically tradition wise we have added way too many losing seasons in last 15 years to a program that has proudly pointed to being one of few teams to have played in over 40 games. So there is that. But more important than that. To not make a bowl game means we lost 3 of last 5 teams on our schedule and doesnt your pride say Tennessee should beat Missouri, Kentucky,Vanderbilt on the regular and Charlotte always?

It would be an "attention getter" for future recruits over the next 2 classes and for your current players returning. Thats why beating AU was a big deal, it lends to the idea that after losing to WV, UF, and UGA by 26 each what we are doing is eventually gonna work if you buy in. Now extending that over the next 5 games with 4-1 or 5-0 would plant that in concrete. 3-2 would still do it but wouldnt catch the attention as much.

so OP, would you rather us NOT go to a bowl game and have ANOTHER losing season? This is about the dumbest thing I have heard in a while
Between the time you posted and my reply there are probably 4-5 that would make your list now... welcome to volnation lol. The extra practice time alone makes the tidy bowl look great regardless if anyone wants to go to Shreveport or Detroit to watch it and as u mentioned it means we are at .500 and that's a dang sight better than. 4-8
