2018 Midterm Election Thread

No, I was talking about the idiotic commercial where he points a gun at a teenager. The protective father thing would be all of the other fathers in the neighborhood telling their kids to stay away from that psycho's house.
He definitely embarrassed himself a little when he dove to the right in the primary to outflank Cagle.

Texas senate race is all but over. The last three polls have had Cruz up outside the margin of error and his support over 50%. The most Interesting thing about the internals of the polls is that Cruz is up nearly 20 points among Hispanic voters. I’m guessing a lot of them are turned off by an Irish guy pretending that he’s Hispanic.

His last name is Cruz, ese.

Stacey Abrams has to be the worst negative commercial maker of all time. All the democrats I know here in Atlanta are voting Kemp.
She's secondary to the whole thing. This is a race between Brian Kemp and out of state, Democratic PAC money.

Despite her financial and tax issues which are disqualifying in my mind, I actually talked to a former state legislator last week who said Abrahms was partisan but was smart and would at least listen and work with him when she could.

Sorry, I can't keep up. Which way are you leaning on this one?
I preferred Cagle in my limited exposure to GA politics. I've only been here a year. But instead, just like the presidential election the guy I was leaning toward didnt make the general so here we are. I'm leaning Kemp.

Other than party affiliation, what do you find scummy about the guy?
His commercials give a clear insight into what he thinks motivates his constituents. His negative ads are sickening.

The thing that I find most scummy is his view of public education and his stated support of HB 217. He has even claimed to want to double the effects.
Horrible direction and long tern impact.

Georgia GOAL may or may not have had the impact desired, but in the face of our current results, I can't imagine how trying something different is a bad thing.

is this the bill about increasing the cap for tax funded private school scholarships?

Yes... basically with the idea of allowing lower income kids opportunities in private schools. The public education proponents understandably hate it.

I cant bring myself to call that a "scummy" stance. I can see a philosophical disagreement but I dont see either side as morally wrong.

lol.....that was the sales pitch that many bought into. The reality was just a removal of funds from public education to funnel into private education.

Quit wasting the money already given to public schools and this wouldn't be a discussion.
They could use the money better by vocational training or even more career path oriented classes. One size does not fit all.

HB 217 is a tax exemption for student scholarship programs.
HB 217 2017-2018 Regular Session

didn;t read the whole thing, but from what I saw I didn't see anything incriminating or concerning. oh no more money going to private scholarship funds. the horror.

Agreed. We spend more money per pupil than any other country in the world yet we keep falling behind in almost every category. Time to dig into the problem.
I don't think private school vouchers is the answer though. It would be more of the same but more expensive.

HB 217 does nothing to move money from the government around. its all private donation based. you really want to keep the poor dumb don't you. hate freedom of choice, both by the donators and the students. keep them locked up where they belong in public school right?

I would rather we bring our public schools up to the level of the best private schools but when you take the ability to discipline away and are more worried about self esteem than grades, it isn't going to happen.

Do school systems down there recognize the importance of technical skill based careers, or are they still driving everyone down the college prep path?
