Pair him with the right DC and that could change.
He had a pretty good up and comer at WSU last year, but their finances are so bad that they couldn't afford to compete with others that wanted him to keep him.

I don't think many DCs worth a crap want to be a part of a team with Leach as HC because his offense is not conducive to helping out a defense with ToP. Plus they can't really prepare for more the traditional offenses you have to defend agsinst.

Agree. but depending on this coming class, we should be competitive and start making a little noise in two ...
possibly. the schedule lightens up a little bit, but we get younger next year, and depth still an issue. not sure which one makes the biggest difference, first?

All true. But if you pay them, they will come. (Or stay)

If people would just look past the quirkiness, they’d see the guy is a winner that regularly beats teams that outtalent his. And personally, I like the quirkiness.
Will lose to a FCS team on you.

His offenses are actually typically towards the top of the rankings in terms of TOP, atleast the past 3 seasons. Would be higher than just about all SEC teams(including Bama) except about 1 or 2. His defenses are also on the field less than Bama

I am hoping it will be another year for the current kids on the roster with this staff and new culture, along with getting another class of the RIGHT kids... those two should at least make a difference. I do worry though about our D line...

yep. being in year 2 is a big deal. and aside from the DL, we are going to return a lot of experience. as far as next year goes, it's a good thing so many guys are getting quality reps this season, not just because somenoe is injured and they HAVE to play.

i don't have any real doubt next year will be better than this year. how much? not willing yet to go there....lol.

Best coach we ever almost hired.
Well, he wants to be here. I can see the introductory press conference.

John Adams - “Coach, do you see it as a problem that you’re not a southerner?”

Coach ML - “Well, I’m a pirate at heart. The direct location of my inspiration comes from the West Indies. Specifically Barbados. I believe that’s more Southern than Tennessee. I suppose I’ll fit in fine.”

*** Outside of the offensive line, one of the reasons the offense is struggling right now is its getting very little production from the tight ends. Wood-Anderson was fine as a run blocker, but he was roasted in pass protection, allowing three hurries and a couple pressures. This is the second straight week he’s struggled in that role. He also finished with just one catch on several targets.

The VQ guys said during the summer that DWA has made it no secret that he wants to be a 1 and done kid, and wants to be in the league this time next year.... I'm really hoping he realizes how much better off he'd be sticking around another season. We will need him next year, but he could need it more in the long run.

Sometimes these kids get their heart set on chasing money, but odds are this kid wouldn't even be drafted (or invited to the combine) based on his performance thus far.

yeah, he's got the measurables, but not the production. and there's several kids on this roster that fit in that category right now.

i really can't think of anyone that would be eligible to leave early, that would get a high enough grade that they should. there'll probably be 1 or two that may take their chances, if they were to get a combine invite, or get some positive feedback at Pro Day.

for our prospects next year, obviously, returning anyone/everyone that can return will be a good thing.

I really like Leach. And I really wanted him to come for the "entertainment" factor. However a part of me thinks if we brought him here is a white flag of sorts. Almost saying we give up and are willing to try anything.
If we would have hired a 8, 9, 10 win coach a few years ago, we'd be in a lot better place right now. We talk about higher ceilings and lower floors. Since firing Fulmer w'eve been experimenting with coaches that we gambled on as having lower floors and higher ceilings. Problem is they were lower floors and lower ceilings. Obviously, the Coach Pruitt chapter has yet to be written. If we'd have a hired a 8-9 win coach that could sustain that over several years, then the job would have been much more attractive to a coach that has the potential to take it to the next level. All conjecture on my part.

From what I hear he's a "coach say catch ball I catch ball" type of student athlete of you know what I mean

A few interesting stats so far this season:

Running Back by committee:

Jordan (63 car, 258 yds, 4.1 ypc, 2 TDs)
Banks (41 car, 161 yds, 3.9 ypc, 3 TDs)
Chandler (40 car, 247 yds, 6.2 ypc, 1 TD)
London (36 car, 205 yds, 5.7 ypc, 3 TDs)

Four Different Pass Catchers have caught balls of 50+ yards (we had only 4 total plays of 50+ yards all of last season): Palmer, Callaway, Pope, Murphy.

Sophomore Palmer Showing Flashes: Josh Palmer is averaging 25 yards per reception, with 8 total catches. He's also averaging 7.8 yards per carry on 4 end-around rushes. He's emerging as the Vols greatest big play threat.

Guarantano Showing Improvement:

Last year Guarantano played in 9 games, tallying 997 yards on 86/139 passing, with 4 TDs and 2 Int, and a 7.2 avg/p.

This year, after only 5 games Guarantano is already at 801 yards on 59/93 passing, with 4 TDs and 2 Int, and a 8.6 avg/p.

His completion percentage is up a tick from 62% to 63% so far this season as well.

Jucos Leading the Way in the Defensive Trenches: Emmit Gooden leads the Vols with 4 TFL, and Alexis Johnson is T-2 with 3 TFL.

Darrell Taylor Coming Alive: R-Jr Darrell Taylor's stat line is looking better after the Georgia game, he now has with 3 Sacks and 2 FF on the season.

Linebackers Lead in Tackles: Junior linebackers Daniel Bituli and Darrin Kirkland Jr. lead the Vols in tackles with 26 and 23 respectively. Surprising Sophmore Will Ignont has tallied 18 tackles and is third in the LB group.

Punter U: Joe Doyle is averaging 42.44 yards per punt on 25 attempts, with 9 fair catches, 11 inside the 20, and 5 punts of 50+ yards.

Steady Kicking: Cimaglia is 4/4 of FGs and has made all his XP so far this season.

It would have been interesting. You'd get a lot of people who wouldn't like the hire, but they'd just say we should go with <insert hot name here>. There are almost no sure things in head coaching.

There might be two. One's locked in place, and the other's a flake at best. You've got a few names flirting with "sure thing" status. After that, it's all a crap shoot.

Leach would have been entertaining at least.
