Pruitt must prove it

Pruitt is implementing his system even before he has the proper players for it. Good strategy?
Don't believe he has a choice. Even though many of our players have some talent, most were recruited for the Jones finesse system.

Without Dobbs, that system failed miserably.
So even if we tried our players strengths' the result is the same. Better to scheme for our current freshmen and future players imo and jmo.

The book on CJP as UT HC is being written. I am not a blind devotee because of his DC prowess. A HC has to do more than simply coach Xs and Os. This season will be extremely challenging. I predicted us to finish 4-8. For me to buy in fully on CJP i want to see, at minimum, a team 1. prepared, 2. enthusiastic, and 3. improving.

I have been critical of what I've seen in games 1-4. No need to rehash it here. Even though watching UGA handle us with relative ease is always painful, I believe there was improvement.

Where did you see improvement?
Where are we still sucking wind?
Any of you who are in "wait and see" mode, does the improvement move CJP up a rung on the ladder of buy in for you?
Pruitt hasn’t done anything wrong to where I think badly of him as head coach but I do hope he realizes that he needs to get in Heltons ear and tell him to open the playbook up sooner. Him coming from a defensive background, I can tell he’s having a positive effect on that side of the ball which is refreshing. Anyway I was optimistic about Pruitt before the season and I still feel that way. The reason being I was optimistic prior to the season was because everywhere he has been regardless of the talent level on the roster, he has elevated the play and the performance of the defensive side of the ball. Now I know as a head coach he has more responsibility than just the defense but he has hired a great staff and he’s an excellent recruiter which in due time will pay dividends. But the big positive I took away from yesterday is they didn’t fold and kept fighting.

Good perspective. After all, Butch beat a 11th ranked Spurrier team. But now we see that as a blip and not a sign of what was to come.
Butch didn’t beat Florida josh Dobbs did.

Spurrier was at South Carolina then. Not Florida.

But beyond that, your implication is also wrong. It's a team sport. When one of our players and coaches win, we all win. No one wins anything on his own, in football.

I know it's hard for some to see anything more complex than an on-off switch, but Butch's 60-odd games while coaching in orange weren't all turrible. Some of those games were pretty big wins, and the coaches and players all share the credit.

Definitely wait and see. Not to high on him right now cause he won’t change his offensive philosophy for what he has right now.

He wants to be bama north and that’s fine but we don’t have the talent right now to run it down your throat like he wants to do.
I have never coached football at any level, but it seems to me that you have to install your system and then recruit the players you need to it. If the team tries to run a different system to fit the current personnel, what kind of recruits do you attract? Not the ones that you want to run your system. So, you make the team a prisoner of the prior coaches recruits and abilities. Or, you do recruit players to run your system, but then try to shoehorn them into a different scheme. It's not like you can turn your entire roster in one or two seasons like the NFL. Better to me to go ahead and install the system you believe in and are most knowledgeable about, and recruit the players to play in that system. Yes, it will take several recruiting classes for this to show results. I think Pruitt will get plenty of time to try to accomplish this. More time than many on this board would think possible.

Yea talent just not we’re it needs to be. Not particularly happy with play calling. It’s very predictable

Play calling this week was focused on keeping JG alive and giving him a pocket to execute in. After the disaster with Florida, that had to be the only thought. I think once that was established in the first half, and he could be sure that JG would be safe, Helton began to open up a bit and add additional components to the mix.

As for Pruitt, I like the fire and the competitor attitude. He has a great resume to become a great HC. Seems to be someone who can actually coach and a great recruiter. That said, Pruitt is like getting a 4* or 5* recruit. Massive potential but will take time to develop. Impact from day one but a number of rookie mistakes. We should expect great things but in the end, the only results that matter are the ones that spill out onto the field. Like that recruit, also, we should not expect to really judge boom or bust until the 3rd year (though we should have an idea well before then). One thing that makes me feel more confident we will get there, is that we have Fulmer to help coach up and support recruit Pruitt. Time will tell tho.

I see improvement on the defensive play calling compared to the last 10 years. Idk how he does it, but coach has us in the right play call(particularly on bringing pressure) about 90% of the time. It’s like he knows the opponent play before it happens and we always have a guy or guys right there to make the play, but most times we aren’t executing and missing tackles.

What's the verdict fom yall's perspective?

Still wait and see. He hasn’t yet put a product on the field that convinces me he’s the guy. 5 games in and we have 3 illegal formation penalties in a row during a punt? Going for 2 when 1 would put you 2 scores down with a TD and FG to tie it up? Both are inexcusable HS mistakes.

Enlighten us on what we should be running and why.

Are you seeing improvement against UGA even though we have a long way to go?

If so, does it do anything with your take on CJP?
I think the d line was much improved yesterday. Not much else as far as players. I liked the game plan starting out yesterday then they just kinda went back to the same stuff.
I liked the effort they showed in the 2nd half.

My take on CJP is he is a rookie head coach and it shows. Team has looked like an unorganized mess, uninspired and lacking in fundamentals. I think he has the potential to be an effective head coach but we should expect some missteps as he learns. Not much will change my opinion on him this year, either positive or negative this year. I think he gets.3 years regardless, but we will most likely find out if he.will pan out next year.

Pruitt's running through the tunnel with blinders on, just like his team, they are both OJT

Didn’t look into the Georgia game much but I can tell you against Florida we ran on first down 80% of the time. Ran on second down 67% of the time so that makes things pretty easy on a defense when you can’t run it and keep doing it.
I’d like to see more passing on 1st down. Short drop, quick passes, slants etc.
Don’t have to pass every first down but at least 50/50 or there about.
I’d like to see them roll the pocket some and get Guarantano in space.
Throw to the TE a little more.
At least a few deep balls just to give the defense something to think about. Especially on 3rd and long. If they pick it it’s basically a punt and who knows you might complete it or get a pi.
It’s funny cause everybody says we can’t pass block but on the two td drives against Georgia we were passing and moving the ball. Of course we were down because of the run happy, 3 and out, first half.
Hey they’re making millions to coach. I’m sitting on the couch cussing at the tv because I don’t know anything but I know what they’re gonna do when they get the ball.
Not throwing downfield lets the d linemen go wild. Linebackers run free and safety’s creep up to play the run.

No change in how I view him.
He has a lot fb knowledge but I admit, I won't know how that translates to the HC position until he's had some time and recruits.

Defense is progressing but on the field way too much.
I like that he's calling out offensive play calling. We didn't run on every first down this week and I bet we won't throw a lot of ill timed passes behind the line of scrimmage next week.

The other negatives are the same as we've rehashed.
If so Helton needs to be fired before the AU game.

Not seeing much discernable improvement from this week to last week other than they held onto the ball better.

Offense was a no show for over half the game again and the defense got gashed again, especially when bowing their necks could have made the game interesting. Seeing nothing schematically that makes me think this staff is the key to getting back go ATL any time soon.

Taylor had a nice game and it was good to see them get Chandler in the open field for a change.

Cleaning up the turnovers was a good sign. Tells me he is at least getting through to the players.

No improvement in defense? Dline? Also, Kongbo was mentioned a lot on the radio broadcast. Maybe his lights are turning on???

I saw an opening of the playbook on offense. The defense got into the backfield before the ball was released. Whatever went down with Sapp last week, he played so whatever needed to happen there got done. Those were positive things that I saw. At this point, it looks like SC and Vandy are our best chances for SEC wins. I want to see how we play those games and Missouri and how we do on early signing day before move too far off my spot. Of course, a win against AU or Bama would probably scramble my brain and make me think we'll win out.
