—HubbsAs Pruitt and Company left Sanford Stadium they did so with some improved confidence. They also left looking for some better luck after not being able to recovery any of Georgia's four fumbles any one which would have made things more interesting.
But they did leave feeling better about several things. Better about their fight. Better about the play of some individuals and better about how their message to recruits after a rough night in Knoxville last week.
Tennessee will spend the week in high schools around the country seeing commitments and other priority recruits -- particularly defensive and offensive linemen. They will be selling player development, playing time, a growing culture and relationships, all things that must resonate after Saturday reminded everyone of what Tennessee needs the most – more depth.
Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano finished the game 13 of 21 for 143 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line held up better on Saturday and he had more time to throw when the offense decided to let him take some shots down the field. His first touchdown came on a 37 yard strike to Josh Palmer. His second toss came on a route to Ty Chandler, who showed flash out of the backfield with four catches for 53 yards and Tennessee's final score of the afternoon.
"I got a great block that pinned the defender to the outside," Chandler said. "It allowed me to do my job. It was a great play and a great play call from coach Helton."
So what was the difference in the second half?
"The second half we came out better," Chandler said. "It all comes down to executing. We just have to be able to do that and sustain drives. We weren't able to do that in the first half."
And Chandler feels like he and his teammates learned a valuable lesson heading into the bye week.
"We learned that we an compete with anyone in the country," Chandler said. "Just getting everyone on the same page and showing everyone we can do it. Then going out and doing it."
Another tailback who shows promise is freshman Jeremy Banks. The Cordova, Tenn. native is big and physical and already shows leadership possibilities with his big personality. He also has shown an inability to hold on to the football.
Late in the game, Banks was given an opportunity and while spinning to pick up extra yards, laid the ball on the ground again that resulted in the final Bulldog touchdown.
It was the second lost fumble of the year for Banks in a part time role.
"Nobody on our team practices as hard as Jeremy does every day," Pruitt said. "He's a ball of energy all the time. He wants to play. He wants to practice on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. I've not seen Jeremy Banks have a bad day. There are a lot of guys that want to play on Saturday, but they don't want to it the other days. He wants to do it every day.
"He just has to take all that energy and focus on doing the little things that will give him a chance to have success because he wants to really bad. He has put the ball on the ground way to many times. It's just like I told him, 'if you continue to do that, you are killing yourself or killing your opportunity to develop as a player because the coaching staff loses confidence in you.' So he has to take care of the football."
Banks picked up 18 yards on six carries on the afternoon.
—VQJeremy Pruitt addressed Callaway's injury following the game by saying the junior 'Got his bell rung' and will be evaluated this week.
We were so spoiled with Dobbs, especially his "end of game" antics. If we were down 21 points with 2 minutes to go, we had a chance. I am not yet convinced about this offensive coordinator, but Pruitt has definitely made a good mark on our defense, IMO.Agree with everything except the bolded part. chrysts arm is worse than my grandma’s and she’s been dead for years.
Being able to read a defense doesn’t count for s*** if you can’t hit a WR above the ankles consistently.
Based on what...? lol
So, again, if all of this is true, why do our coaches keep trotting him out there?A QB with no touch on the football. Throws a AK 47 bullet pass on short passes. He can't read a defense or pick up a blitz. No feel for the game for example handing the ball off to his RB who got blasted instead of keeping it. Stares down his number one receiver every time. Looks fake when he's fired up on the sidelines unlike Dobbs who always looked authentic when he tried to get everyone hyped. Scrambles like he's running in mud. Touchdown pass was short and lucky because the receiver was covered by a linebacker interecepted if he was covered by anyone else. Doesn't lead his receivers on any passes. Looks like a deer in headlights. Football IQ is not high. This kid is not the future of the program. I'll take a mature senior from the West Coast who's won ten games can manage the game and read defenses and give us a fighting chance. Regardless of who you won those games against you still have to go out there and win them. That's experience. But hey JG is the "future" of the program.
No, because the first TD was earlier. The second TD was not a lot later, but he had more time to decide if he would need 1 or 2 there. It was the correct decision.Well no it isn't. If he goes the first time and makes it he only kicks an extra point the second time. The first time was after a more physical and longer drive so making it seemed easier at that point with a tired D imo
