Betting on the unknown is always a shaky proposition.

All of us want to see something to help us hedge our bets. Be it in the field results, recruiting wins... Whatever.

And for now there just still a lot of unknowns and we literally have no choice but to wait and see.

And that has many of us kinda impatient and anxious. Cause we know what the worst case looks like.

And another season at or below .500 does nothing to curtail the anxiety, and only increases the impatience.

Fire Nick! He can't get his kids to pee in the toilet.
My 14 year old wants to fire me. He knows everything, of course, and in the midst of our daily 7:15-7:30 am scheduled argument, took it out on me and my wife that his brother's can't pee in the toilet.

I asked him for his brilliant, "one time" solution to this problem, and he promptly found everything else to criticize. He's going away for youth camp tonight. I'm not sure how I'm going to cope the next two days without someone telling me how to do everything in my life.

So, defiant! I understand, I do; I get it. We all have to feel good about ourselves in our own way.

I see from some of your other posts, MGB, that you didn't like the hire of Pruitt from the go...and this is cool, man; everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect yours, and actually admire you for standing up in the minority.

I am curious though as to why? Why didnt you like the hire? Besides Pruitt never being a HC, what was it about him you didn't/don't like? Was it all the Championships, or #1 defenses? Was it the total admiration of his former players, or his penchant for being one of the best recruiters in the country? Was it his immense knowledge of the SEC and football in the South? Was it his record of teaching/coaching/developing his players, not only for SEC play, but for the next level?

None of this did it for you, huh? I'll say this, man, you're a hard son of a gun to impress.

As the parent to an 18yo, I can safely say, it only gets worse.

We got in an argument with him last night. He was talking about how rough he has it at UT as a freshman. Said we had no idea. That we had it easy. He was in the middle if writing some paper and was going to the internet. We told him when we were in school we had to go to the library, there was no internet. We had to use something called microfiche. He said "is that a tiny fish?". I said you know what else? If you typed your paper and made a typing mistake, many times you had to pull the paper out of the typewriter and throw that page away and start over. He just sat there with this goofy look on his face shaking his head.

I agree about recruiting. I also agree that he is having growing pains. I just have not seen much from this well paid staff to this point that is translating into positive results. The roster was much worse than most of us thought. That will improve, I believe. We will see if they can be developed better than the previous staff did. The development of our DBs to this point is encouraging. We have to try and be more creative on offense. Scheme a little bit around our OL.
Doc, I agree about the offense, nothing good, nothing improved there; but the defense is showing signs. All levels(not just DB) look to be improving and giving good effort for the most part, and he, more times than not, has them in the right places, don't you think?

Things I want to see Saturday:

Limit turnovers. 2 or less.

Make Georgia drive the field. Make them go 50+ for scores.

Take some shots. We have nothing to lose in this game, push the ball down field.

Stay aggressive. Fake a punt, go for it on 4th and short, maybe another onside kick.

Don't quit. No matter what the score, give 110%

& GBFO.

Also happy birthday to me, turn 27 tomorrow🙃
Wise words from a young whippersnapper. Oh, and happy birthday! 27 is when the body starts falling apart.

Sounds just like my 8 year old daughter. Everything’s unfair, I’m mean, etc. But I love her, and love to see when that fiery personality is working for good. What a strange dichotomy parenting is.

Oh while your in here Sugar, isn't Oct. 1 the official day we can start talking about Basketball in the RF? Invol wanted me to ask. :p

Oh crap your right. I axed the wrong one. 85 Sugar thanks for the correction. I will be sure to throw you under the bus when I see him next time. LOL
All these Sugar's look the same! 😂

I’m sure this will be unpopular but here goes:

I’m a graduate in 03. I’ve had season tickets up until the last two years. Just some job stuff honestly not a referendum on Butch or Pruitt. I was there last night though. I have two kids 4, and 2. Both were upset I was leaving for the game and not going to dinner with them and mommy. I’ve been as rabid a fan as can be and seen great games and seen us get blown out. At this point however I’m going to record the games and spend time with my family. I’ll watch them at night once all are in bed or not if it’s another butt kicking. We have given a ton to this university. I was there down 33-6 last night still screaming the defense on in the third quarter. It’s just not a good use of my time or other fans time now. Some will say fair weather fan etc and Pruitt harped on the spring game but at this point it’s about enjoying time with the kids while they’re young. Hoping in a few years Pruitt has it turned around and I can take my kids as little ones and watch us beat Georgia and Florida etc. I still remember my first game October 7th 1989. I was about to turn 8 and we beat UGA. Sat in section D about row 42 and had to have my dad and uncle hold me up to see. It was so great. Can’t wait to do it with my littles in a few years when Pruitt has us top 10. Go Vols!

Your two kids are way more important than ANY football. Including Tennessee football.
I totally support you.

My son is 16 and my daughter is 13. It goes so fast. You will always have the Vols. Your kids need their Dad and you need your kids. Best part of your life. Revel in this time with them.

Go Vols!

The night of the signing-day party, when Tyson Helton said we are going to line up and run the ball and play action, ALL of VolNation, and the fan base, were pumped out of our minds to hear that. We were so sick of seeing spread, shotgun, clap your hands...we were screaming for a straightforward attack. And now that Helton is giving us EXACTLY what we wanted, SOME are ready to run him out of town.

Not only are they trying to install a new offense, but a new identity/culture. This is who they want to be, who WE wanted them to be. Unfortunately, as my brother puts it, "you can't win the Kentucky Derby with a bunch of damn donkeys".

So, we have to ask ourselves: do we try something new to try and mask our flaws, with no guarantee of success, and get away from what we want this program and offense to be, going forward...
Or, do we stick to what we want to do, take our tail-kickings and lumps, to establish what Tennessee Football is going to be going forward, our foundation, our culture, lining up and running the football, and play-action...that's who Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton want to be, and EXACTLY who we wanted them to be.

Preach!

You put a lot of effort into this, so nice job. It’s simple. Despite what you’ve said here (couldn’t give a flying flip about knowledge of the SEC; neither Saban nor Meyer had that pedigree when they got to LSU and Florida, respectively), not only has he never been a HC, he’s never had to be at a program where there was a massive rebuild. He’s always had a Jimbo, or a Richt, or a Saban as the compass. Sure he probably learned some stuff, but the heavy lifting was done when he got to those places. In your attempt to make me look foolish, I think most of those things are great traits, and I hope they come to pass here. But I don’t think he was or is the fit that UT needed for such a rebuild. Not only does he have to start from...worse than scratch?...he has to learn how to be a head coach at the same time.

Coaches can be great coaches but not a great fit for the situations they are hired to, and my fear is that what we have here.

Who do you think would have been a great fit for here?

Who do you think would have been a great fit for here?

I think we needed a higher floor guy. I would have been absolutely ecstatic had Gundy actually accepted (much more so than Gruden), Leach, even a Les Miles would have some appeal as a stabilizer, although not ideal. If the Tampa Bay stint had never happened, Schiano coming off rebuilding Rutgers would have fit the profile. I get it, he’s radioactive for many reasons and I don’t regret him not being here.

To be clear, I think Pruitt actually has a higher ceiling than any of those guys absent Gundy for the reasons you mentioned. A much lower floor though. I get that he came in and started saying aight and cornbread (you’ll have to forgive the lack of quotes, I’m feeling quite ambivalent about it at the moment), and everyone was hooked, but as you said, I’m completely fine being in the minority here.

I’ve had my problems with JG holding the ball too long but my gosh that kid is one tough S.O.B.

He is. Regarding holding the ball too long... JG got the ball out fast against WVU but I think our two cupcake games gave him a false sense of security with our OL.
