My random ramblings.....
1. A lot calling for Heltons head, but hard to judge an offense without an offensive line.
2. Not trying to be a guy who blames refs for losses, but JFC they missed a lot.
3. Tim Jordan is a tough runner, but he has the vision of Helen Keller. Should be fourth on the rotation IMO.
4. Our offensive line is disgusting.
5. Austin Pope... dude, wtf.
6. Shamburger never needs to return kicks again.
7. If Callaway can only fair catch, even when their is a chance for a return, then he doesn't need to be back there.
8. AT with a forced fumble. That was nice.
9. Pruitt coached desperate IMO. I know the game started bad and we were down 14-0 before anyone knew it... and i agreed with the initial fourth down attempt, but I didn't like the onside attempt and I think we took a lot of chances last night when it might've not been needed.
10. Speaking of onside attempt, how do 4-5 guys not beat out the one FL kid for the ball.
11. Speaking of Pruitt, he's definitely a first time head coach. He will get better. I don't doubt that at all.
12. There's a lot of players on this team I love, but this is also a roster that needs a complete overhaul. We are weak in many spots (Fitz isn't a miracle worker afterall), weak mentally, and psychologically.
13. I hate to say it but I turned the game off with about 10 minutes to go. More because I had to wake up at 415am than being disgusted with the game, although I was disgusted. I heard Banks scored a TD and he was running hard. Not being sarcastic but any other positives in the last 10 min that I missed?
14. Finally.... UGA was a stacked deck when Kirby took over, yet he still lost by 30+ to a bad Ole Miss team. Old Dominion beat the #13 ranked team in the country yesterday. Sometimes **** happens. Look at my user title.... I'm a homer and I ate the cheese and I thought we were a 9 win team this year. Reality kicked me in the face yesterday - we are a bad team still. It is going to take some time. Might not be until 2020 until we can look forward to a respectable 9 win season. That said, I believe firmly that Coach Pruitt will right this ship.
Been quiet on here today but I keep coming back to this thinking especially after watching the Titans the last 2 weeks.
Imo Pruitt is the one setting the tone/plan for the offense. He feels the only way we can win is with games just like the Titans have played the last two weekends.
Now with that said it's hard to take the DC mind out of a some coaches imo. They always want to play defensive type games.
If that's the case with pruitt he very likely is putting handcuffs on Helton forcing a run , run, predictable 3rd down pass type plan that shortens the game.
Now I am not saying that plan isn't the thing to do. In fact I think that was needed against WV but it can't be the plan every week like it has been the first 4 weeks.
I'm desperate. I really am. Helton/Pruitt need to rethink this season's offensive strategy, imo. If JG is healthy we need to air it out a lot more than we have been.
I agree with almost all of what you said here.
Every fan needs to read your #1 over and over again; not that it would do any good. All those calling for Helton to be replaced and complaining about his play calling just never seem to learn. It reminds me of those who were never satisfied with Chaney and constantly complained about Debord. There are a few fans who I look forward to their insight on things, but honestly, most just really aren't good judges of how to fix our problems. Replacing coaches is the lazy answer.
LV, I understand what you're saying, and you're not wrong...but, NOTHING was working, or going to work. Our OL, TE's, and H Backs are as bad as I've ever seen at one of the most important aspects of the game of football (up there with tackling), blocking. I'm not sure they can block long enough on rollouts, bootlegs, anything. All other position groups are 6,7, maybe 8 win groups...but, OL, TE's, and H Backs may keep us from winning 4. IF NOTHING ELSE...we have to keep this OL class together, along with landing Darnell Wright, which I believe we ultimately do...then we'll be in business going forward.I guess you think being ultra predictable is good for an OC with a shaky line....
Everybody and their mother knew we were gonna run a screen on that 2nd int. That’s poor play calling.First INT happened because OL failed to protect JG and failed to chip the DL that caught the ball, or you could argue that JG held onto the ball a little too long. Second INT was just a great read by the defender, $&@! Happens. All those fumbles had ZERO to do with play calling. The reality is that if you take away the turnovers, that game is at least going to the 4th quarter.
What i would like to see against UGA:
LT- Richmond
LG- Smith
C- R. Johnson
RG- Carvin
RT- J. Johnson
Stick with this OL and go with it. It will give us at least a little push on the interior. Should be able to run a little on the left side.
RBs:
Stick with London and Chandler as your features. London has been our best in pass pro but chandler is most dynamic. Bring in banks for about 8-10 touches. Don’t care to see Jordan anymore.
WR/TEs: not many complaints out of this group. Probably need to keep DWA beside one of our tackles. Do a lot of chip and flair routes. We could use our TEs as more of a dump off or safety blanket. I would like to see Jennings in the slot more working underneath more instead of Johnson. Jennings could easily get 8 catches a game working underneath from the slot.
QB: i think JG has done ok this year. He’s took a beating, most of it not his fault but some of it is from holding the ball and not moving as much within the pocket. JG is also banged up.
So, I would give Chryst a shot to see if his internal clock is a little faster and can check us in to a little better play occasionally based off experience. Get the ball out quicker, roll the pocket more. Less outside screens, more tunnel screens and mid screens.
I know we’re probably not going to win regardless but i think of we do some of these things it could give us a could foundation to build off of heading into our bye week.
Sugar, go listen to Coach Mathews podcast.LV, I understand what you're saying, and you're not wrong...but, NOTHING was working, or going to work. Don't get me wrong, I'm a little mystified by some of the playcalling and personnel decisions, but I trust all these guys, including Helton...I just believe they are tinkering like hell to figure out what they can do, and what may work. Look at it this way, just imagine the worst case of BVS on VolNation. We all have our choice, but just imagine who you think the worst case is. Got it? Now imagine taking the field, with a roster full of those guys. Beaten like a dog, some of them before they even started.
It may just be throwing something at the wall to see what sticks at this juncture, while weeding this mentality out, and CHANGING THE CULTURE; which, at this point, is way more important than wins and loses, and play calls. That sounds like a crazy thing to say; but, changing the culture...learning, both the players and coaches...and keeping this recruiting class together while adding to it...that's what is important right now, imo.
Agree with everything but the RB's.... don't know if you saw it last night, but Banks was the only player on the damn team at the end who was fired up and playing lights out... You need to reward people for that. If others see the way he plays, maybe they adopt the same philosophy and all of a sudden we have an entire team that has fight.
HTR, dead on, man...with all 14 points. About 9 & 11, I believe he was a little overwhelmed. Now before all the vultures jump on that with some negative bs, I'll say...who wouldn't have been?!?! With all that was happening last night, which felt strange to me from the get go...hell, I believe they where trying ANYTHING to find SOMETHING. 6 turnovers; OL getting embarrassed and the QB killed; fumbling a KO inside the 20, the 3rd such turnover inside the 20, if memory serves me; getting skulldrug by a big-time rival; NOTHING going right...man!!! As I said, who wouldn't have been overwhelmed, especially a first time HC, in his 4th game.My random ramblings.....
