Just got back from the game, hated driving back to WV seeing all the smiling wvu fans along the way, but what do ya do?!?
It was a good time, living WV, and the majority of my friends being wvu fans, we tailgated with quite a few, and they were all great.
Was a hot day tho!!
As for the game, I just watched the 1st qtr on replay, I'll finish later.
My quick notes, Oline was worse than expected, JG looked better than I thought he would, looked very good tbh I thought.
As mentioned, play calling was not bad, but some questionable at times.
Defense...outside of Kirkland and Phillips, I don't see any huge playmakers. DBs were a step behind all day. Dline didn't do bad, but would love to have seen more pressure.
It is what it is fellas!!
I'll be the first to admit, WVU might be a bit better than I thought they'd be, still yet to be determined how good tho? All while we might not be as improved as we all had hoped.
Moving forward, I definitely will be hesitant to use the on paper talent comparison as a talking point, bc that didn't equate to shyte this game!!

I think Pruitt thinks he can play JJ all over the place, like Rashaan Evans. Probably is getting here too late to make too much impact this year, however.

I've been on this board for 10 years now, and lurked for a few before that...and nothing has changed after a loss. The gloom and doomers harp for 48-72 hours until their catharsis is completely exhausted and then it's on to the next thing to B and moan about...

New coach. New/old AD. New attitude.

Time to whip some a**, aight?!?

Ive mourned this loss up to now, 4:49 PM, Sunday.

Now Im looking for things to build on, looking for the bright spots. Looking forward to the Florida game.

The psychology of this thing, man, being a fan, it is really something.

He’s a really fast LB which could honestly solve some of our pass rush issues. He could be a slasher on passing downs.

I'm not doubting his ability, but he will be a freshman. I hope he learns quick for many reasons, but I am not putting any stock in it. Besides, he didn't go through summer workouts and fall practice. He is very much behind right now.

If I knew how to put video on here I would. I was living in Jackson TN. This guy inside Goody's ask my Dad and I have we seen Al Wilson play. We both said no and went and him the next Friday night against their rival Jackson North Side. He was the real deal I knew it that night. He went to UT and Won the National Championship in 1998 starting LB! He played that night in high school MLB/FB. He high stepped from 30 yds out for a Touchdown on offense. You know the rest of the story. Played at UT and Denver Broncos in the NFL!

Man I wish I could see that video of that guy talking to you and your dad inside Goody's. Sounds riveting!

Negative Nancy party up in here. Ya'll need to break out your big girl underoos and get a grip.

O-line that really hasn't had the opportunity to practice as a unit and gel together started to click right before our eyes on that long scoring drive. Let them get some practice/playing time together in this new system and they'll likely shine.

JG looks a ton better than last year and will continue to improve and get more comfortable in the new scheme. I didn't see that deer in the headlights look on him at all yesterday.

Running back stable looks solid. See O-line gelling for improvement there along with film review on seeing missed cuts. WR and TE will open up as JG gets better protection and the playbook gets deeper utilization.

Defense will improve as they get used to shifting back and forth between 4-3 and 3-4 and get more comfortable with the new schemes.

D-line looked ok for time spent with new coaches. On LB, you might want to remember both the OLB had a hand in the dirt last year under garbage staff. JJ, once able to pad up, will help a bunch there even if only in practice. If the plan is to redshirt him, 4 games of your only job is to eat the QB could be fun.

Ya'll are giving our young freshman DBs way to much grief. These guys were in high school last year and one was playing WR. Give them a chance to learn the positions the Pruitt way and they're going to be just fine.

New staff, new systems on both sides, new players and I mean all of them having to learn from point A since they never were taught proper anything with the old staff.

Tl:dr... Growing pains will happen this year, but this team will grow each and every week. We as fans get to watch the actual re-birth of Vols Football.

I'm excited to finally see it, why aren't you?

Reading everyone's personal takes on the game yesterday, and adding some thoughts of my own, I still think this staff is exactly what we need to turn the corner-- AND WE WILL.

Many of us thought maybe we were farther along than we actually are, but I agree that these next two games will allow us to make some big changes and work on improvement in certain areas.

I think the talent is there to improve, and we finally have the coaching staff to actually be able to adjust, change, and raise the playing level of some of these kids.

Only question no one has brought up from yesterday--- JG came in as a pretty highly ranked Dual-threat QB... I know he is not a big kid, but why the heck didn't he use his legs every once in a while yesterday to keep the D honest and on their toes??

Sorry, but we have an experienced backup, so I am hoping we see some of this starting next week. I think it will be a MUST in order for us to move the ball. Not expecting a Dobbs performance, but he never left the backfield yesterday--- He could have easily run 3-4 times and picked up some good yardage, while forcing them to account for the run.

JG isn't a Duel threat QB.. he is at his core a pro style and was actually ranked #6 nationally there in 2015. The DT stuff was just hyped fluff created for recruiting visibility for a kid from NJ getting vastly overlooked.

Help me out as I don't fully understand this 3-4 defense.

Why don't we see more of Taylor and Kongbo on the field at the same time?

Unless I drank more than I thought yesterday I don't think they played together much at all if any

We were in our nickel sub package most of the game which moved one of them to end with Phillips on the other side. Just on third and long did we have multiple “jack” backers on the field together.

Either way, he isn't Worley slow and could have tucked it and ran a few times yesterday... hopefully this is something that is addressed and looked at as an option moving forward.
