And who’s going to “feel better” after ETSU?

There is zero upside. Only downside if we don’t win convincingly enough.
I think you are mostly right, however I think having these two cupcakes now with game tape of their first game will really help the freshman in the secondary. They faced a difficult offense and now have two full weeks to watch tape and prepare so I do think it will be beneficial for them. The rest of the defense...ehhh I'm not so sure. Too much experience to still be playing like crap.

Alright, well I updated the game thread with a look back at the original keys to victory and how we measured up, so you can see that if you'd like, but here are some other points on the game.

1. Speed: WV was shockingly faster than us. From their DL to the WR's... they were a step ahead all night. Flowers was caught flat footed a couple of times, and the defensive backs were no where close to being good enough, even if they were facing studs.

2. Grier: Easy to be upset with what he did against us, but remember, he's on the Heisman shortlist, as the commentators let us know 12,304 times. We couldn't generate pressure, which i thought would be our biggest issue, and he showed that laser accuracy often (missing a few), but oh... some of those passes were tight. It is the worst a QB will make us look all season.

3. 3-3-5: Their defense gave our OL fits, and I frankly expected better. I'm not sure if they changed their defense a lot from what they have shown before, but the OL were confused often.

4. Tim Jordan: Boys... we've got a running back. Chandler probably has a concussion from that knee to the head, but Jordan's performance made him the head of the committee. I look for big things from him this year.

5. JG: Looked really sharp.

6. Offensive playcalling: I'm not sure we've seen what Helton wants to do yet. I've heard the 3-3-5 defense requires a lot of different scheming, similar to facing a cut blocking option team. The OL shortcomings forced Helton into a short range passing game, which was really effective when our WR's began to get separation. We couldn't get enough time to throw it deep that often, but I did not see much that I didn't like. More TE involvement would have been nice, but they were needed to for blocking.

This year is going to be hard. 99.9% chance we won't make a bowl. Staff should work their butts off on recruiting. It's going to take years to get rid of the Butch flops on this team, and their are so darn many. Year 2 I think is wear this team will barely make a bowl game. Year 3 we should be a decent football team. Year 4 is when we start rolling.... of course all this depends on is if Pruitt turns out to be a half decent coach.

Go Vols!

We got hosed on a couple calls too..that crack back block in 1st qtr was one. Doing nothing with first possession, then giving them a FG right before half killed us. Last but not least, that turnover on downs in 4th. It was just a bad matchup all around for us, having to play 3 frosh in secondary against Grier and Sills. It is likely that we are not this bad, and they aren't that good as the final score indicated.

Dang. It's a double bind. Am back to thinking in terms of moral victory and it WAS, as observed, a 27 point loss? Not good. Reality calibration is a clear casualty with BVS. I guess we've got the team we've got. Maybe this moment of clarity for the program will be useful somehow. Got to get off the hopium.

JG can play. Drive in the second qtr was a thing of beauty.
Must get Jennings the ball more. Don't care how they do it . He is a beast.
Jordan is good. Hope Chandler recovers . Need a homerun hitter.
Oline settled in. I was ticked at Kennedy at first.

Refs need to review film for the definition of holding . Hint focus on Shy Tuttle Number 2 . He had to have been frustrated. No help from his comrades. It all starts up front and the young secondary had little to no chance once Grier settled in.

What I want to see is this team improve. I want them to stomp a mudhole in an overconfident Florida team. GBO!

Man, if LSU wins we will have the only loss in the SEC in week 1. Doering called it. Makes me sick. Hopefully the team will start clicking in the next 2 games.
LSU ain't going to win. Because Special Ed. (I have to make fun of someone today). One other thing. Harbaugh is likely the most hyped coach ever to accomplish so little compared to said hype.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings if we didn't see Kongbo out there as much anymore. I'm sorry but the dude plays like Jane out there. He's been front and center of the off season hype machine for what feels like 5 years and he still hasn't done jack shart. Not a believer.
I can't argue with this one. I did not hear his name called all day.

Nothing worse than losing the first game of the year imo, that’s torture. Wait a whole 9 months for disappointment right out of the gate. Fuggin blows
We need to fix our schedule. We need cupcakes in our first game, at least. I don't want any more kickoff classics. I want Florida later in the year and I want Bama to be rotating. You all can dox me all you want. I am tired of us getting the short end of the stick, schedule-wise. Every. Single. Year.

I’d really rather just schedule 4 Non P5 Teams every year for OOC games.

We already play Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and the crossover every year.
I think we have to have one P5 OOC. I am ready to start scheduling Kansas with regularity, though.

No moral victory for me. Nothing close enough for that. Unacceptable performance, but it’s the measure of where we are at. We were just never going to be a 8 win team this year. I had us at 6, and I’m firm on that. They will improve a ton as the season continues.

Good breakdown. I thought Helton/jg did exactly what they should have. They played soft shell coverage the entire game. Gave us everything underneath and we took it and did it well. We stayed patient and balanced. I liked it.
