The line came around. Much more impressive than the defense. They got worked early.
So should they fire him now after 1 game? That'll really make this program better. We don't have players not really that hard to understand. UCLA got beat by Cincinnati not because Chip Kelly sucks as a coach but because they don't have players. We scored 6 points less than our per game average in 2017, and the defense allowed 135 more offensive yards than our per game average in 2017. The bar was pretty low for Pruitt to show some improvement over last season; he did not in this game.
Like I said much better than the defense. Forgot about today. WVA is a damn good teamDid they? WVU nailed us for 12 TFLs, nearly 5 more than our 2017 per game average.
Again, Guarantano's numbers were great, except the didn't translate to points. I'd rather he gone 12/27 with 3 tds, 1 int, and 56.8 QB rating, all things considered.
Those that expected a magic wand to be waived over our o-line and entire defense had a rude awakening and that's a U problem. Not a UT problem. You're unrealistic. Thats all there is too it. Not saying you should be comfortable losing. I was very frustrated during the game. But if you don't know that it's going to take a couple of years to turn this around you need to find another sport to follow.
Yes it's unrealistic when you're going from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Yes it's unrealistic when you look at the fact that the majority of our o line wasn't even here in the spring. Yes its unrealistic when our o line has about 8 total practices as a complete unit. Yes its unrealistic when you have 5 or 6 players playing a new position and furthermore some of this switched from offense to defense or vice versa. Yes its unrealistic when the culture has been full of fluff and losing was excepted. Yes its unrealistic when the majority of these players don't fit this system. Yes its unrealistic when three majority of the returning players have never been in a true S&C program....... Shall I keep going because I can? It's unrealistic to expect too see some improvement over the 2017 team, that had the worst record in school history?
Here's a course of action. It starts with educating yourself. So far you're actually the only poster I've seen suggest that course of action.

The "magic wand" some of you expected in reality is called recruiting. That's the only way this gets fixed. Period. We can cheer and hope for success this year. But the only way we make significant progress in this program is through recruiting. And that takes time. Not 9 months. Like 2-3 years.
With the strength of the SEC teams the only way to improve the recruiting is to show the program is in good hands and on the way up. Today did not help but we will know more about the direction after the Florida game. If we do not show improvement in that game you will see defections in the 2019 recruiting class which will adversely affect recruiting in 2020 and beyond.
Agreed! Our players didn't quit either. Something different from last year playing for a different staff.About like I expected. The defense was a little worse than expected. We had some bad matchups out there. Give the WV receivers credit, they caught every ball that went up. We missed a few assignments and got pushed more than I expected we would.
The oline started slow. Lack of push and missed blocks. They did improve as the game progressed but still have work to do. JG played very well for a guy so miligned. He will be great in a few more games. Where were those long balls?
I am anxious to see how much we improve by FL.
I liked the coaching. Good in game decisions and good changes during the game.
We got beat but our guys have a lot of video to look at and improve from. They will get better as the season progresses. We played well enough today to win our last 4. At least we played as a team.
Not completely true. Yes winning helps recruiting. Winning big games on national tv helps recruiting. But we as fans view recruiting totally different than 18 year old high schoolers. One could make an argument that a 18 year old kid would see TN as an opportunity to get playing time earlier. There's a million ways you could skin recruiting.
I don't understand the portion of the fan base that thinks you change the name behind the title of head coach and everything is instantly fixed. Mind blowing.
You compared one game to a 4-8 season. My preferred method is give us more than one game before we make too many comparisons. Jmo. I’m anxious to see what kind of adjustments Pruitt makes now that he’s seen our guys under the lights. To the per-game averages of the 2017 season. Do you have a different preferred method for measuring progress?
All offensive players going up against an anemic defense. The lack of physicality combined with missed assignments and stupid penalties is a major problem. Especially for a coach that was supposed to bring a level of toughness and discipline to the program, and it didn't take talent to accomplish those things as a player. Pruitt had 9 months to create a gameplan and instill discipline into the team and get them to play more physical and neither showed that game. Imagine how bad they would've beaten us if Grier doesn't throw those 2 horrible balls. Better yet, imagine how bad it would've been had WV just had film on our D. I was pretty sold on Pruitt when we hired him, but nothing I saw today shows that he's the guy to get the job done. Buckle up though because Florida will be even worse. Their offense will be solid at the very least as well as much more physical and athletic and their defense is far better than WV's. I really hope I'm wrong but I don't see him lasting more than 2 years. You're looking at 6-6 at best this year and we will probably lose a few key recruits also. Which means you're most likely looking at the same thing next year and 2 6-6 seasons isn't necessarily improvement after being 2-3 years removed from 9 win seasonsI believe. But we just got our tail's whooped bad. The only impressive thing I saw was Tim Jordan, Calloway, and Jennings. JG didn't do bad, should have passed more but he isn't making the calls.
