Yes i would lol. Because in no scenario do i see McBride&JG both coming back next year. So that leaves us with 2 QBs on roster. But even if both do return and JG plays lights out, absolutely yes.

If you have 25 in a recruiting class, absolute best case scenario you hit on 20 of those players. You’re really not willing to sacrifice one spot for an elite athlete who has proven to produce in this conference?

Pros to bringing him in:
-Elite athlete
-experience
-depth
-taking bamas #2
-allow to comfortably redshirt our next QB signee.

Cons:
Using 1/25 spot (which according to %s isn’t likely to pan out anyway). I look at it as trading a 7th round pick for someone if this were nfl. I think you’re wayyy over valueing that one spot in a recruiting class when even in the best recruiting classes in our history say 80% of the players pan out.

I think it’s actually worse than that. BEcause you aren’t dropping wanya to give a spot to hurts. Yourlikely dropping your lowest graded and/or highest risk prospect. So the odds of that player developing is much lower than the odds of any particular player in a given class developing

It doesn't leave us with 2 qbs though. Unless yer saying take him over Maurer or any other qbs we could take in this class. I'm perfectly comfortable going into next year with JG, Shrout and any freshman we sign. I think JG and a second year Shrout are both perfectly capable of being as good or better than Hurts. And I don't think that scenario prevents us from redshirting our next qb signee. I'm pretty sure having to play 3 qbs is far less common than you think it is. Just because lyle had to doesn't mean it always happens. I don't give a chef about taking bama's #2. I would much rather use that spot on a guy like Taulia if it counts in this class (which would upset bama more IMO) or Harrison Bailey and another HS QB if it counts in next class.

I’m saying it leaves us with 2 returning QBs if one of JG/WM leave. Which i think we both agree that both will not be returning.

No one has seen anything from shrout to this point, all to go off is Pruitt talking about his arm. And i like shrout but to say he is better than right now or next year Hurts is honestly just drinking the kool aid Bc just a month ago we were questioning if we should’ve even signed him based on his interceptions.

So JG lights it up. You bring in hurts, who is probably the best backup QB in the sec and could maybe help you other parts of the field Bc he’s so damn athletic.

Stop looking at it like you’re automatically wasting a spot of a top talent that’s going to pan out. That’s the less likely of the scenario.

Think of it like you’re taking Hurts over Geraldo Orta, Andrew Butchner, or Sherion Jones lol

Exactly. There’s literally no real con to bringing in Hurts.

As long as I don’t have to draw up plays...or recruit...or talk to stupid fans...
Let's tighten this up a litttlllleee bit more. You need to include dealing with self-absorbed boosters and an interfering administration. And something should be said about the press, too.

Fulmer bled orange. Kiffin wanted to be at USC. Dooley obviously had huge Georgia ties. Some were worried about Butch going to Michigan. Pruitt is as Alabama as it gets.

Not really a point here really but it's kinda interesting.

Counterpoint: Vince Dooley was an Auburn alumni and coached there 10 years before he went to Jawja . Turned AU down in 1980 (though you probably know this. Pat Dye was a GA alumni and got the AU job. Maybe CJP will blaze his own trail.

And if Hurts plays the "backup role" well, that's even more equity. I can imagine Nick & Hurts having this very conversation when it's announced that Tua is getting the nod.
“Since you’ve been such a peach about “accepting” the backup role (tho you had no choice, Tua’s better!), I’ll play you the minimum and leave Tua in the whole game during some blowouts. Now don’t head off to Baton Rouge or Knoxville and bite these hands!”

Yeah contrary to common belief on here if I was the head coach at Alabama and Tennessee came calling, I'm gone. He'll be gone too, unless he just didn't want to follow Saban.
It’ll depend on the timing as well. If he’s got it rolling and Alabama comes open I’m sure he’ll be a candidate. But if we’re steadily a 7 to 9 win team for the next 5-7 years I would guess they’ll have bigger names ahead of him.

And honesty we’re all getting ahead of ourselves here. We don’t know he’s going to be successful and this conversation could be comical in three years. Much like the Butch to Michigan talk after his first year.

I’d have people for that. Pattern my approach to Chip Kelly’s.

I think he'll have it rolling by year three. Yeah it's premature, but I honestly never had this level of confidence in Jones at any point in time.

If WM leave we still have 2 returning qbs, JG and Shrout. Yer math is off. As far as questioning Shrout's signing because of his ints in HS, I never did. I think he'll be good. All I said though was I could see him being at least as good as Hurts after he has a redshirt year. That is not that far fetched. Hurts won a lot of games on a stacked team but not many would call him much more than an average qb with above average running ability.

So if JG lights it up, do you honestly think Hurts, who would only leave bama because he's a backup, would come here to be a backup. That is a way bigger fantasy than thinking our current qbs could turn out to be pretty good there. Qualify the spot how ever you want, I don't think it's worth it for a one year rental.

Again, back to my original point, how bout we see what we have this season before "not banging the drum" for hurts.

I feel the same way to a certain point. My peak level of “confidence” in Butch was probably 2013 when we beat South Carolina and had all the legacy guys committed. Then he lost me again when he lost to Vanderbilt to cost us a bowl opportunity.

The loss vs Oklahoma in 2015 was when I checked out officially and knew he didn’t have it.

I remained skeptical until 2016 when we really turned it on and were 5-0. But even then you could tell the players were getting it done in spite of the coaches. After the Vanderbilt loss that year I was 100% in favor of firing him and remained that was until he was terminated.

I feel better about Pruitt now in terms of SEC fit in regards to style of play and high school talent evaluation to play in this conference. We’re recruiting physical players to play in a physical conference.

I don’t know if he’s going to be a good game day coach though. That’s still up in the air.

There's not much about Maurer in here except the long toss competition. But it is worth the watch for the end where they talk to Ryan Hilinski about his brother Ty who was the QB for Washington St that committed suicide in January.
