Ya have to think this coulda been handled differently.

And I think back on the time vs. GA, when Hurd let up short of the goal line and got the ball stripped; you know he felt like crap right then, and didn't need CBJ yellin right in his face. What if he had just put his arm around him instead and said I know you can do better; go make it happen.
I don't blame Butch for that one. He should have been in his face yelling. Hurd turned a sure seven points into a turnover in a very tight game because of sheer stupidity.

I understand your fundamental approach to analysis. I was just offerring a technical approach. Kiffin took an offence ranked #106 up to #31 in his only year here and Jancek took a #82 ranked defense up to #35 his first year. I'm reasonalbly confident we have better defensive talent and coaching that what Jancek had to work with. You mention injuries and according to Phil Steele we had the most lost starts last year due to injuries of all 130 FBS teams. Mathematical analysis tends to anticipate a regression to the mean. We'll see about special teams; Pruitt said last week our kickers were kicking good.

What metric are you using to judge that first defense Jancek had in 2013? Because that unit was only top 75 in one statistical category (Passing defense, where they were 27th). Jancek’s unit made a big jump in 2014 with his second unit. The 2013 unit was better than Sunseri, but still not good. You are right about this unit having more talent than that 2013 unit, though.

As for special teams, I think our kicking will be fine. Punting worries me, but I’m sure our coverage will be fine.

I just think you’re undervaluing just how good our special teams units were in 2015. Sutton and Berry was as good of a PR/KR duo as we’ll likely ever see. Daniel was a great punter, guys like JRM, McDowell, and even JJ were absolutely killing it on kick and punt coverage. Our offense really struggled at times that year and our STs kept us in every game that year.

That’s not the entire story. According to Mr. Fields, we are removing the checkboard on the pants and going to a solid stripe. He added yesterday that there will be another change in the uniforms that shows up this year.
Thought this had been announced a month or two ago...guess all but officially?

Maybe.

I’m not expecting the huge jump many here are in year 1. We’re gonna see that jump next year, IMO. I could see us having one of those seasons where we play better football all around and it doesnt really reflect in the W-L column. Our schedule doesn’t really do us too many favors given how much change we’re going through.

Good luck to him. But only ones I am concerned about are are the ones we got. Isn't Shrout just as big and was reported to have the strongest arm out of all our QBs. With the most NFL potential per some analysts at some camps or the opening. And now we got Maurer and he is looking real good too.
Shrout may have the greater potential but he’s got way further to go to reach it than Martinez.

We got blown out so much and scored so little, we could be 2x better and win one additional game.

It is the entire story.
Removing the checkerboards has been known for a while.

The black outline has been rumored for a while now too.

In the SEC it’s really rare for a team to go from losing season to really good year.

Auburn in 2013 going from 3-9 to 12 wins was unprecedented. This league is so tough that we could be drastically better and still end up 6-6.

The checkerboard removal has been known for weeks.

I stopped reading after what I thought was Hyams and went back and read because it did not make any sense with the post you quoted.

LoL

The place is owned by a Jewish fellow that also leaves pieces of his libertarian prose on the tables for you to read through while you wait.

Maybe they could be replaced with Jimmy articles

Watching the TCU vs WVU game from last year. WVU loves the delayed hand off, and uses that predominantly for the run game. It’s very slow developing, we should be able to limit them in the run game. They aren’t great against the blitz, but Will usually gets the ball out quickly. The key again will be good db play, and making him scan the field while we bring pressure. He’s mobile as well, and keeping contain will be huge. On defense they are decent in space, but not built for smash mouth football. We need to run it right at them and use the vertical passing game against their shaky dbs. Without Will Grier, this WVU team is 6-6 at best. He’s literally the only reason they are any good.

I agree.

People like to say they were x plays away from a better record.

between Tech and Umass we were 2 plays away from being a 2 win football team too.

Pruitt has his work cut out for him and I know it’s a totally arbitrary line to set without watching the games be played out, but I’ll be damn impressed with 6 wins

I used only the unit efficiencies as calculated by ESPN.

Team efficiencies are based on the point contributions of each unit to the team's scoring margin, on a per-play basis. The values are adjusted for strength of schedule and down-weighted for "garbage time" (based on win probability). The scale goes from 0 to 100; higher numbers are better and the average is roughly 50 for all categories. Efficiencies update daily during the season.

I accept you come to a different conclusion regarding the prospects for our team this year using whatever means you are choosing. What I posted doesn't specifically place any value one way or the other on anything you have argued so I'm not going to argue with you about something that's not arguable based on the model. I think there's a better than 70% chance that the math for us this year will turn out to be more accurate than you may think. jmo.

You are right about one thing though. In 2015 our special teams had a rating of 70.9 and was ranked #3. I checked to see if I had made any other errors. Nope. The error doesn't change the projected performance of our special teams this year. We should have the 2nd best special teams unit we've had in the last 13 years. :)
