Thing is, I don’t know if our offense will be good enough to keep pace with theirs. And a lot of this comes down to red zone scoring, turnovers and the kicking game. I’m not saying we win. But I am damn sure we will be able to run the ball on them.

I don’t think they have to be. Just run the ball, Extended drives, score 25+ points and we have a chance.

If we can control the pace of the game i love our chances to win. That’s basically not giving up big plays, busted coverages. Make them sustain drives. I don’t see them marching up and down the field on us as long as we keep stuff in front of us.

Agreed. They are not patient on offense. Keep everything in front of toy and they will see start forcing throws.

Just want to come in and say thanks to everyone for supporting us right now. @5FingerVolPunch @butchna @LaagerVol . it definitely helps right now. I've spent about 7 grand on it and owe the lawyer another thousand. Paying 500 a month right now which has put us very far behind. Y'all are helping so much though. I'm ready to finally be able to sit down and watch a game with the kids though.
Man you don’t owe me any thanks. Wish I could do more (daughter just started college and I’m paying about tree fiddy for it). Nothing in this world is more important to me than my kids and I’m sure you feel the same about yours. Hope everything works out for the best.

I think the three of us are in general agreement. Both teams are going to try to make the other play their game. WVU is going to air it out every chance they get, while trying to stop our run game and force us to throw downfield. Our D is going to be in Grier's face, trying to create turnovers and force them to trot out their untested run game. IMO, our size and physicality give us an edge, allowing us to run on them more than they can throw on us. We trump them on depth, too, and I think wearing them down seals the deal.
What do you mean we "trump" them????

I was more concerned about our secondary than our front 7, but now that our DBs are looking more reliable, I'm more optimistic. I think it'll be a close game, but I think we pull away late because we keep grinding and wear them down. Our physicality and deeper rotations will be a lot to overcome.

No question, their QB and WRs are excellent and will be a challenge to stop. We don't have a large margin for error. If Grier has time, throws all over us and we can't answer, the game could have a less-fun outcome.
well, i'm all for you being 100% right....

Our pass rush has and still is my #1 concern for our team particularly against WVu. The way we want to play in the secondary is going to depend heavily on Grier not having all day to throw. If you’re going to bump, jam and man up you better get to the QB

Slow down there hard charger. They have a couple of grad transfers on that DL. We don't know how "soft" they'll be, if at all. First step to a loss is to underestimate the opponent.

I too like confidence, but we've done nothing as a team yet to warrant being braggadocious.

I didn't say anything.

And stop peaking.

Trying to find he wording to be certain, but if the kicking team touches the ball in flight it voids the fair catch. So if the kicking team can position themselves, giving appropriate yardage to the receiving player of course, yet jump and snag or smack the ball to their own team, then there is no option for a fair catch.

That would be kick catch interference. The player calling for a fair catch must be given an unimpeded opportunity to catch the kick

Tennessee was back in full pads and the most notable takeaway was all the different number changes for special teams purposes.

To recap:
Jonathan Kongbo went from 1 to 99
Dominick Wood-Anderson from 18 to 4
Kingston Harris from 51 to 54
Bryce Thompson from 10 to 20
Austin Smith from 11 to 30
Ty Chandler from 3 to 8
Josh Palmer from 5 to 84
DJ Henderson from 31 to 39
Matthew Butler from 56 to 94
Brent Cimaglia from 30 to 42

With several duplicate numbers still on the roster, the latest changes are another indication of who is and isn’t above the playing line for the Vols to start the season. The 2017 class is clearly on notice.

Other highlights from Friday: Trey Smith remains at LT and was working in tandem with Jahmir Johnson, who was back at LG. The backups there today were Chance Hall and K’Rojhn Calbert. With Brandon Kennedy still nursing a right hamstring injury, Ryan Johnson was at center and Riley Locklear flipped over to RG.

Why is our pass rush a concern? Do you think we are not going to be able to pressure Grier?

Why would you assume we will? Our pass rush was terrible last year and pass blocking is the strength of their OL.
Hard to rush the passer when nobody throws a pass. If last year is a good indication then our pass defense will be incredible. We gave up like the 3rd least pass yards in the nation last year.

Mainly because i don’t think we have an elite edge rusher on roster. I think Taylor is solid. Who knows about Kongbo.

I also don’t think we’re explosive enough in the middle to generate pressure from the inside. I think turtle pre injury could have been.

But yes match up wise WVu is gonna get the ball out quick. A lot of mesh concepts.

NM, this scenario would be kick-catch interference on the part of the kicking team. But, the rule change does change a shift in strategy to a more squib kick heavy approach. I would explore squibbing it almost every time, especially if the kicking team doesn't have a kicker who can get it to the endzone.
