You must have to be Thunder Thornton or Peyton Manning for CJP to be swapping cocky talk with you. Because generally he's a man of few words and fewer boasts. And he spends as little time chatting with donors as possible. The man wants to coach football, not talk about it with the media or money people.
The work is completed for JJ Peterson. The waiting, however, will go on at least a little while longer for Tennessee's prized linebacker...
Eh I don’t think our DL vs their OL is a great matchup for us. We may be able to stalemate them in the run game and free up the LBs to make some plays, but idk how effective we’re gonna be getting after the passer. They’ve got some really big dudes who specialize in pass protection. Their starting 5 on the OL won’t be pushovers. It does... and it's quite effective in the Big 12. But put their inexperienced RBs (minus their best RB from last year) behind their OL against our front 7 starters and I think we have the advantage. I'm sure there will be a dropoff in our backups, especially in the first game. I'm just not all that concerned that WVU will be able to create a strong running game this early in the season. Maybe I should be... but I'm not.
Well just looking at it logically, with Pruitt calling the defense we probably legitimately have the best defensive coordinator in the country. We’ll be solid on that side I have no doubt.
And WVU is soft as hell in their front 7 on defense. We should be able to push them around.
Vols +9.5 all day.
sleegro took the words out of my mouth. i'd start to worry about the run game as the game went on if we're not able to do anything against their passing game. then they'll be able to do whatever they want anyway.
it's an interesting match up. if their style of play were more traditional, i'd be more inclined to be right there with ya. i think they will be able to pass protect well enough, that when and if they decide to start running the ball, it may be too late anyway....lol.
all that said, i still think our offense will be some of our best defense. i really look for us to limit their possessions and try to keep it out of their hands, and really put the pressure on each possession to be uber productive.
yeah, i don't think we're far off at all. im a little more skeptical on how good our defense will actually match up. i agree on the size and physicality, but they're probably faster...does that negate our supposed advantage?I think the three of us are in general agreement. Both teams are going to try to make the other play their game. WVU is going to air it out every chance they get, while trying to stop our run game and force us to throw downfield. Our D is going to be in Grier's face, trying to create turnovers and force them to trot out their untested run game. IMO, our size and physicality give us an edge, allowing us to run on them more than they can throw on us. We trump them on depth, too, and I think wearing them down seals the deal.
Are you serious, Clark?! What a stupid rule. That will take away the pooch kick for sure.
Can we stop the run? That's the key. WVU's great QB/WR play will only kill us if they can make headway in the running game. I trust our ability to move the ball against them. We should be able to score 28. If we can stop the run, we have a chance.
