The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Have one and love it. It was my first AR and it hasn't given me one problem since I've owned it. I posted a couple (S&W M&P15 Sport 2 and Ruger 556) but there are more. M&P15 S2 can be had for under $500 if you look and the Ruger can be found for under $600 with a couple of nicer features. I posted a 16" from Radical Firearms a little bit ago that is $399 which is a hell of a deal on from what I've heard is a quality AR. Like txbo said, Palmetto State has a ton of good deals and their ARs are good entry level guns as well.

I never really used any IMI stuff personally. Just saw good reviews on it. I'm partial, as are my rifles, to the Prvi Partisan stuff. Accurate, cheap and reliable.

However, money wise, you should try this when it comes back in stock. Just try it for accuracy sake.

20 rds - 5.56mm Bonded Winchester Ranger 64GR JSP Ammo RA556B | SGAmmo.com

I'm familiar. Bought some of this back when I read the article about the best 5.56 loads, re: "64 grains or more, as hot as you can run it." This was right up there with the TBBC (556SBCT) as one of the best barrier-blind 5.56 rounds out there. And it was more accurate out of my rifle. Not by a lot, but noticeable.

But at a buck-sixty a round, compared to the .80/round (right now) for the Federal load, it just comes down to economics. I'm a believer in "shoot what you're gonna shoot", so between a couple of mags a month, and then keeping 800-1000 rounds on hand, well...you see the issue there. Yes, I know, once you're zeroed, there's no need to keep shooting the expensive stuff.

So I went with the Federal load, and somehow I ended up with 500 rounds of the TAP 62gr (must have caught it on sale), which I have not shot yet, but I expect similar ballistics. The 62gr TAP is my "filler" when I go below minimums on the Federals. FYI, I use 55gr TAP in-house for HD, followed by 3 mags (90 rounds) of Federal SBCT.

I'm okay on inventory for now with everything except for the 69gr SMK's, and SGAmmo has IMI ammo on sale now, so I'll bump up my stock on the heavier rounds now that I know my rifle(s) likes them.

As always, I really appreciate the feedback and advice found here. Oh, almost forgot. Spent yesterday working on "trigger reset" for follow-up shots. The Geissele SSA has a very short, crisp reset. Working on 3 targets about 15 yards apart, at ranges from 25-50 yards, it was easy to move and transition from target to target without losing my "rhythm". Decent 3-shot groups to center mass was easy. It was only when I got cocky and started working head shots that my age and the sun caught up with me. Punching stationary paper with no return fire and zero stress is no measure of combat effectiveness, but I did establish that the rifle will put the rounds where I aim them. So now it's on me.

Two weeks until Vol Football is back. I'm hoping Pruitt and staff turn out to be as pleasant a surprise as IMI ammo.

Does anyone have any M-lok handguard recommendations for the AR pistol? I'm thinking BCM simply because of the reputation and aesthetics but if anyone else had experience with others, I am all ears.

10.5", 5.56 Phosphate barrel as of now. May upgrade to a Faxon pencil at some point but for now, Im stuck with the stock barrel.

I'd check Midwest Industries. They have some nine inch free float types.

(and here's a little secret, they manufacture the BCM branded stuff too)

There's a lot of stuff out there. If you want some cheap stuff I can recommend a couple of websites. I've used some of the Chinese stuff and have had good luck.

Just a basic carbine I can knock around and learn to work on.

Maybe go used with an upgraded rifle, then? Take a look at Gunbroker.com. Don't cost anything to look.

Aside from that, there are many here who know better than me. I'd at least give GV's opinion a look, but once he gets his claws into you, well....

S&W are perfectly fine rifles to "start" with. Affordable, well built and has a good "big name" to back them. The Sport version for certain. However, the Sport version is not what many would call a hard use rifle. But perfectly fine for the opening act and to tinker with as you get more comfortable with the platform.

If one is looking for a "built tough" rifle, there are better options, but for an out of the box soda can shooter, the Sport works fine.

I am agreeing with you. I'm saying for a 16 inch bbl, there really is not a good reason not to go with a mid length over a carbine gas system.

Shockingly enough, that smith has a 1/8 twist barrel. So a mid length gas system, 1/8 twist barrel, magpul furniture, all for $700 +shipping. Hell, I’m tempted myself lol
