'18 GA LB JJ Peterson (Tennessee signee)

Best of luck to JJ. That being said if high school was tough, not sure he can handle college courses. IMHO he will never be a Vol and I really hope I am wrong.

I would respond to that buy saying you are not aware of exactly how much of a resource the Thornton Center and tutors are for college athletes at UT.

If I were advising JJ, if he is close, I'd tell him to work on getting qualified and come in in January as a gray shirt. That way he gets to participate in off season conditioning and spring ball. Be ready to go in the fall.

Grayshirt? No.

He already signed in February.

It would essentially be a gray shirt from his perspective. It wouldn't help our numbers, I realize that.

Edit: Did we not do the same with Lawless? Offered him a gray shirt after he signed and he declined and went to UNC.

He could just Redshirt

They let him sign, then pulled the scholarship offer?
Happens. Forgot the name of that lone running back in the 13 class. Ended up at ECU after some issues with his physical. I don’t think it’s considered pulling an offer. They have to qualify for admission or it’s undoable. What they SIGNED is a letter of intent in exchange for financial aid...not a binding contract for the school if there are eligibility issues.

Jabo Lee ended up at Temple or Tulsa after not qualifying at UT in 2013. I think Derrell Scott ended up at ECU after a transfer. Then there was Kendall Bussey who ended up at A&M in 2015 and Rocky Reid or something like that.

I think Lee was the one who we helped find another school after not qualifying

Neither Bussey nor Reid signed with us tho.

True my Dad never even had to take an English class and he graduated in '82 and he was on the JV basketball team at UT

Peterson would have to complete 16 core courses for an academic redshirt, but he could qualify on a more lenient sliding scale with a core GPA as low as 2.0 (instead of 2.3) using his best core grades. He would be on scholarship and could practice and work out with the team while he gets his core GPA up with the help of the Thornton Center. But he still has to qualify.

How is the academic redshirt certification different than the competition certification?

Will he?

If he can't qualify for an academic redshirt, he was never close. He must have had a path to qualify or UT wouldn't have squandered a spot. Being able to count his 16 best core grades toward a 2.0, with no courses or grades locked-in, is a lot easier. Under the lower requirements, his worst grades don't even have to count.
