Guys, I'm really getting excited for the season to start.

(nuclear power is the answer to all of these problems)

The French have been doing almost all nuclear for decades. Obviously we are a much bigger country and you have deal with the waste, but since we’ve cleaned up most of the Superfund sites we have the room to store it. If the French can do it, surely we can.

There are other names looking to earn playing time that haven't garnered a lot of attention publicly but are off to solid starts in the preseason. Junior college defensive tackle Emmit Gooden is one. Gooden’s size jumps out quickly and he saw a good bit of work with the 1s in the Sunday workout. He will get plenty of opportunities on Sunday. If Gooden can be a real factor at nose tackle, it would give Pruitt and the defensive coaches with some flexibility on the defensive front. Similarly, Alexis Johnson has had a strong start to fall camp.

The H-back/fullback spot is hardly the sexiest of positions, but Austin Pope has cemented himself there quite well, per multiple folks. "He's just a football player," said one source. If Pope can continue to mature mentality, especially with his confidence, he could be a big factor in UT's offense in 2018.

While many newcomers like Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson have gotten plenty of talk, many have wondered who might benefit from a fresh start. One guy who early on seems to be benefitting from a new coaching staff is junior college defensive back D.J. Henderson. The senior make six tackles in 2017, after redshirting in 2016. No one is projecting Henderson as a starter, but he's putting himself in a position to be a real factor on special teams and appears to be positioning himself to possibly be in the two-deep at cornerback.

With the pads on and a scrimmage coming, the competition on the offensive front will intensify. The dynamics of that unit will change in the next 10 days when Trey Smith returns. With Chance Hall continuing to improve the line could look different in 2 weeks.

I am going to the Aggies-LSU game in College Station. Will also be wearing my Tennesee gear. Ogeron will think that we’re stalking him...😳
Keep the pressure on him, Doc! Great place to watch a game down there!

My wife and I are feeling a yearning to move back to the East Coast, and are heading that way soon to check out some places (and to play some golf in Pawley's Island). We both grew up in Atlanta and have family there, but I won't move back there. We are checking out some places in NC (Asheville, Raleigh, Greenville, etc..) as we haven't been to those places in 20 years. I lived in Raleigh for a couple of years in the late 90's and traffic was bad then. but I like Raleigh a lot and they have great jobs there in my field. Asheville has the size, climate and the cool vibe we are looking for but housing prices are pretty high. But Asheville is within driving distance to Neyland for games. Not so sure about Greenville, it wasn't considered a great place when I lived in Atlanta back in the 90's.

An interesting snapshot view of Saban's program

Defense wins games. These are the broad national rankings for Bama over the past decade. CJP was DB coach 10-12 and DC 16-17. The green highlighted years were national championships and the green highlighted W-L records were conference championships. If you can run the ball well then having a good passing capability is important but not often used. The fewer points you allow opponents to score the fewer you will have to score to win. Wit or wisdom; You decide. I'm looking forward to seeing what our defensive minded head coach can do over the next few years.

Chatt, do you think Bama is maybe an anomaly? Not in the sense of, 'defense wins championships'; but, look at the other teams that have won championships, or other successful programs, here recently, outside of Bama. First, let me say that I am a defense wins the SEC type of person, I just think having a Cam Newton can too, he did. Ohio St beat them with a 3 stringer playing out of his mind. In recruiting, the most focus should be on putting together a defense to win the SEC, i agree; but right there with it should be landing a Tebow or Watson. Those QB's beat Bama, that's how you do it. Last year, Auburn was really the first team I've seen beat Bama, that actually took it to them in all phases, and the QB didn't completely go off.

The French will give up eventually. It's what they do.

Ainge said earlier this week we have 10 guys who can go toe to toe with anyone. He said the problem is the next 30 that gets you to your top 40. We've seen Alabama and now Georgia building incredibe rosters such that they're by default at least going to win a lot of football games and be expected to win their divisions each year. I looked at the top 10 players recruited by Saban for each of his classes signed so far. I highlighted defensive players though some of the athletes recruited also ended up on defense. They've also had a few busts along the way. Anyway, at some point, obviously not last year, maybe not even this year, we have to start really loading up on top tier talent. jmo.

Jeremy Pruitt knows where Tennessee is at in the landscape of not only the SEC but also all of college football.

As a first time head coach, he also knows what his biggest strength is: getting the best players to come play for him. Which is a good thing. Because recruiting is the starting point for Pruitt to bring Tennessee football back to where Volunteers everywhere want it to be.

“I will go to dadgum China for him if he’s a player,” Pruitt said in this National Signing Day profile by ESPN’s Chris Low. “We gotta have players.”

The biggest challenge for Pruitt may be that he is now in Knoxville, recruiting for Tennessee against Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa and Kirby Smart in Athens, as opposed to alongside them as part of Alabama’s staff.

Catching up to and overtaking Alabama and Georgia in the recruiting races is not going to happen overnight, but it has to happen to return Tennessee to prominence. And Pruitt knows how that process begins.

“But what you need is that you need 15 guys that you beat Alabama and Georgia on instead of three or four,” Pruitt said. “If we’re not recruiting those players and getting those kinds of players, then we’re not doing our job.”

Jeremy Pruitt's recruiting philosophy has no borders: 'I will go to dadgum China for him if he's a player'

Okay. So it's not only jmo.

As far as football teams go, I think roster-wise Alabama is at the top of the world or at least has been. To compete with them and now Georgia we need to at least somewhat be in their league. I think Newton and Watson were more likely the anomalies and Ohio State obviously has a competitive roster. Also it's not the first time Urban Meyer has beat Nick Saban. That little graphic I posted showed that only once in the last decade has Saban had an undefeated season even though he's had arguably the best roster for I guess 8 or 9 of those years. It doesn't mean he or even Kirby are unbeatable - just that they're going to win a lot of games. On any given Saturday, which is when we will play each of them this year and every year, I expect to beat them. I realize unless we can compete roster-wise that may not exactly be reasonable. Of course as you note if maybe we could get an anomaly type player we might have a chance to knock them off once in a great while.

Interesting that in Pruitt's 5 years as an on field coach, saban had his only 4 number 1 ranked scoring and total defenses. And 4 out his 5 years had top ranked run defense as well as scoring and total defense. And one year with the sweep of 1st ranked pass, run, scoring and total defense. Saban also had his 3 highest ranked passing defenses with Pruitt. And the 3 years Pruitt left to go be DC at fsu and Georgia saban had his 2 worst defenses.

I think I saw where the lowest ranked defense to win a championship in the last 30 years was like 27th or something. And most were top 10 to 15. It is far more rare to win with a bad defense than bad qb. All those QBs you mentioned still had great defenses.

The bridge to the future is our ace in the hole. No one, not even me expects a roster overhaul in one or even two years so we needed a bridge to the future, an edge over those elite rosters that we have to face year in and year out.

For Jeremy Pruitt – a former high school coach himself with stops at Plainview HS (AL), Hoover HS (AL), and Fort Payne HS (AL) – it was no accident that of his ten assistant coaching hires, most of them got their start at the high school level.

According to their Tennessee bios, there are actually three assistants without a high school coaching stop. Regardless of the exact figure, coaching at the high school level and being a great teacher is something Pruitt clearly values highly.

The vast majority of Jeremy Pruitt's staff are united by one common coaching experience - FootballScoop

Having great teachers that are proven great teachers may allow us to do more with less until we have enough time and success to get more. jmo.

This article was from 2012 but it has skewed even more defensive since then. And I was slightly wrong in my other post. But it only highlights the point.

If not for the tremendous outlier that's 2010 Auburn, which finished seventh in offense and 53rd in defense (the second-worst defense of any team with a major title selection ever), champions over the last decade would've averaged a fifth-place defense and 14th-place offense, or a difference of 8.36. So, yeah, Cam Newton was so good that he screwed up the entire chart. Also, that team's defensive coordinator was hired by both UCF and Penn State this offseason.
