If you can find me a coach that can deliver a top 5 class after a 4-8 season he can deliver a yak on the top of Mt Everest in a mankini.

Player development doesn't matter? Butch signed a couple top 5 classes. How'd that work out for him?

fake news. 60+ recruits between the two classes. low player average, big points total.

and we didn't develop enough of them for it to matter, and nor did enough of them stick around or make it.

which is why i'm more inclined to trust what i'm seeing from this staff when it comes to evaluations.

i'm like everybody else, i want all the best players too. but i feel like what this staff is doing from a process standpoint is waaaay more sustainable than what we've seen from any of the previous 3 staffs we've had since Fulmer.

for that reason only, i'm not worrying until there's a reason to.

You had me pretty fired up until you used the word "mankini".

Actually, '14 and '15 were high player averages and elite classes on paper.

Ron, buddy, I get it. You’re inclined to defend anything/anyone wearing that power T. We’ve done this for three football staffs at this point. You defended Dooley and Butch until you couldn’t anymore. That’s your schtick. And it’s great! It gets you a ton of likes on this here message board. I really do commend you for it.

However, it does not change the fact that I believe Pruitt’s recruiting hasn’t been good enough - TO THIS POINT - to bridge the gap between Tennessee and the top competitors in the conference. It doesn’t mean it won’t get better - and I’d actually bet that it will - but up until that point I’m not going to be happy taking these 3 star “diamond in the rough” prospects because “this staff can develop them and identify talent better” that x, y, or z. I’d rather take the 5 star guys everyone else wants. And I want more of them than anyone else gets.

We all have our roles to play, I suppose.

The only difference is this staff as a whole has seen first what championship programs look like. Also look at some of the places they are from and the competition they play. I would gladly take a 3* from Atlanta, Florida etc then someone from New Jersey or Ohio. I know it doesn’t always work out like that but it does a lot.

Helton just coached the best QB prospect imo since probably Andrew luck, along with joe Webb another nfl QB. So i wil trust him in evaluating too.

Given the staff's pedigree, I'm inclined to believe they'll develop players better than the previous regime BUT...I'm 110% jaded now. There's not a staff in the world, aside from Belichek, Urb, and Saban, that I would trust with my team.

I like JP. I think he's got the background and acumen to succeed but....show me.

I'll root for him, hope he does well, and be in his corner but, until I see the product on the field for a while and some real W's, I'm not looking at the off-the-field stuff as proof-positive of good things to come. Not judging those who do, that's just me.

Kress spoke with Dave Bartoo of CFB Matrix. He is extremely high on Helton. He said USC should’ve kept him that he’s the one who develops the guys and really calls the plays. I’m excited for why Helton’s going to do. Wow, could be night and day different from last year. Here’s to a 4-0 start and heading to Ga as a top 15 team

That's been one of the bigger mysteries of college football for me. Who calls plays at USC? Clay Helton HC? Tee? Tyson Helton? Who does/did what?

I think we start 4-0 but I don't think the national media respects us or our first 4 opponents enough to rank us top 15. Probably top 25. After our 5th game though we'll probably crack the top 10. :)

Actually, '14 and '15 were high player averages and elite classes on paper.

eh, 2014, the average was .8950 with 32 signees. we were the only class in the top 10 with 30+ signees and there were 3 classes ranked lower than ours in the top 20 that had higher ratings.

in 2015 we had 30 with an average of .8948. there were only 2 teams int he top 20 w/30+ signees, and there were 6 classes in the top 20 ranked lower than ours w/higher player averages.

no way to know this for sure, but if we would have had the hard cap we have today, or the ESD, i'm not convinced those classes get in to the top 7 w/out the high # of signees.

and again, even if you accept both of those classes as "elite" per Bama/GA/OSU/FSU type standards, the attrition both of those classes took was ridiculous, so in the end, it just didn't matter.

all things to pay attention to going forward on Pruitt's recruiting. and as of right now, i just see a big difference on the type of evaluation being done, and type of player they go after, regardless of their rating.

and given that we've only had 2 kids transfer since he got here, i would hope that bodes well for the attrition rate going forward, which was way too high under Jones.

Still gotta wonder whether we’ve got a Brandon Doughty or Sam Darnold on campus or just a couple Max Brownes

Probably not but that doesn’t mean they can’t be productive.

I also think it’s honestly unrealistic to think we should be recruiting on the same level as Georgia, bama, Ohio state, etc. we’ve basically sucked for a decade. I’m very happy where we’re at all things considered.

that's fair. and it really doesn't matter what any one person projects at this point, good or bad. are there positives to point to right now about CJP's time in Knoxville? sure. in fact, i'd say on what you can actually judge him on while he's been here, i think it all falls in the category of "so far so good".

but no one can say anything about on the field stuff until we see it.

part of the issue as i see it is that we just changed coaches again, so that 2-3 year clock gets reset for the new guy.

problem is, that clock has already been ticking for fans for 10 years. that's a tough pill to swallow for, as CJP puts it, a HUNGRY fan base.

cause in many's mind, while the first year for CJP may be bad and that be rational and somewhat expected given the circumstances....the reality is it's just another bad year for us.

so i get it. i think that's why there's so much "right now" or "this season" talk amongst fans. the sense of urgency has been there for a while now, and it sucks to know you might have to be patient again for a couple/three years.

I think kids knowing exactly what they are getting into, and what is expected of them to win a spot with Pruitt, is going to vastly cut down on players leaving of their own accord.

I do think we will have Saban style "processing" attrition because some guys aren't going to cut it, and roster spots are needed..
