ri·val /ˈraɪvəl/
noun, adjective, verb, -valed, -val·ing or (especially British) -valled, -val·ling. –noun

2. a person or thing that is in a position to dispute another's preeminence or superiority:

Tennessee leads the basketball "rivalry" 12-7.
Tennessee leads the football "rivalry" 20-1.

By the dictionary...Tennessee vs. Memphis ≠ Rivalry.

The Memphis basketball program has been much more successful than Tennessee's in all the ways that matter. To argue Tennessee is indisputedly superior to Memphis in basketball is laughable (unfortunately).

You must have missed all the threads in basketball season where people jumped on others for dual loyalties.

No I was around and identified myself as being a fan of both along with about ten others. Think of every game UT plays as a rivalry it helps you get pumped up but bottom line is in the grand scheme of things the game means very little to anyone outside of Tennessee. Just because UT has started to play basketball lately and Memphis happens to be a basketball school that is consistently better than UT, all of a sudden it's a rivalry. When UT didn't have a basketball team and the Vols were sneakin out W's against horrible Memphis football teams nobody was even discussing the subject.

All I'm saying is...Head to Head there's little competition.
It requires work in every time with immense ability to lose in order to make a rivalry.
Memphis is hardly part of the state of Tennessee...So I wouldn't even call it an in-state battle...

If it wasn't for UT, Knoxville would just be the town you pass through on the way to Gatlinburg.

How is Memphis "hardly" a part of TN.?

How is Memphis "hardly" a part of TN.?

It's a mindset:crazy:...A large portion of those who live there, think that they are either:
A) a Mississippi/Alabama outpost(to some)... or
B) in the mind of others, they are the 51st state.

How is Memphis "hardly" a part of TN.?

I'm gonna start this off by saying that I grew up in Memphis and lived there for 16 years.

That being said, the rest of the state of TN has some very similar characteristics that Memphis simply doesn't have.

How many people in the rest of the state cheer for the Grizzlies, simply because they're in Memphis?

The most popular music in Tennessee, much to my dismay, is country. In Memphis, it is truly not the same.

Memphis radio no longer plays Tennessee football games (unlike the rest of the state).

More athletes from Memphis go to either Memphis or Ole Miss than Tennessee.

I went to Memphis St. undergraduate and UT graduate school and I can tell you they are football wannabes. Whenever the play UT it is the biggest game on their schedule that year. Look at it this way-- they just want to be like us.

You living in Memphis is no excuse for your ignorant statements.

So the demographics are different, big deal.

If you don't like the Grizzlies that's your preogative, but plenty of people do. Let them win a championship and see how things change.

UT football comes on AM radio in Memphis, so do the Tigers, what does that indicate? Nothing.

Plenty of people outside of Memphis listen to rap, that is what your were saying, right? Hell the football team's secondary is nicknamed the "Good Squad". I doubt they got that from a country song. Plus Memphis has two country stations, three rock stations, and two rap stations.

Maybe you're intimidated by diversity.

Well - I will start by saying that I spent my first 16 in east TN and the last 12 in Memphis...

Memphis is definately different but it always has been - nothing new here -

how many cherr for the grizzlies PERIOD? if they were in birmangham they would still suck and have no fans.

I don't know what radio you listen to but I have no problems getting UT games in Memphis

And the reason those athletes go to Ole Miss or Memphis is because of the general attitude on display here.

When I lived back east I loved it and thought UT had a great fan base, until I got to see it from the other end....

The fact that you spent four years at a school that you now diss says it all. And Memphis gave UT all they could handle on more than one occasion. More than Peyton could handle.

Whenever these threads start I begin see why so many people nationwide hate Vol fans. The undeserved arrogance is almost too much to take sometimes.

If Tennessee and Memphis aren't rivals, why is their relationship so touchy as to spawn all these snappy posts?

Ignorance and the ability to know what it's like are 2 different things.

Walk through the city of Memphis then walk through the city of Knoxville, Tri Cities, Chattanooga, or Jackson. Tell me how similar the 4 are that I mentioned, and how different they all are in relation to Memphis.

Oh, and this is to whoever talked about liking UT football and Memphis basketball.

The funniest thing I can find, as I don't consider Memphis and UT rivals, is this type of fan. The one that is a huge Memphis basketball fan, while also being a great fan of Ole Miss football. Now those, indeed, are rivals. How can you be a fan of both of those?!?

Do you really not think Memphis is different from the rest of the state? Honestly???

Why would anyone willingly walk through the Tri Cities, Chattanooga, or Jackson?

I would love to take a walk through Memphis, but Kevlar prices are through the roof right now.

Nashville draws more fans for hockey, which most people didn't even know existed 10 years ago, than Memphis does for the "city sport" of basketball.

Yeah, that great support is why the Predators will eventually end up in Kansas City or Las Vegas. I bet the Hispanic NBA gangs are scaring fans away. Maybe you can get your magic smartphone working and give us a video report.

If you did some research you'd see that the Preds are ahead of last year in ticket sales, and have local ownership that's going to keep them in the music city.

Keep believing that. It's the same spiel Winnipeg and Hartford bought into. Worked out well for them.

Yay and Memphis BB support will bring that team to the top of the league... The point is no one in Nashville really cares about the Preds and we still out support the Grizzlies. At least our team makes the playoffs and wins a game in them once in awhile.

And do you not think the grizzlies will move? HAHA

You do realize the Grizzles are LAST in the NBA in attendance and your the NBAs second smallest market. That doesn't bode well, especially when your owner keeps trying to sell them.

Nashville is Bettman's child (be it an accident or not) and he's not going to let them go. He stuck his neck out to make sure they stayed.
