2018 Midterm Election Thread

Besides, as the events of the late 1960s and early 1970s show, the outrageous and obnoxious antics of the militant left ended up hurting their cause. The taunting of public figures isn’t well remembered, and neither will history long record June’s showdown at the Red Hen. But insofar as these actions stem from a determination to score political points by violating civil norms, they—and the repellent and violent methods of extreme protesters more generally—engender a backlash and alienate allies. By 1972, we should recall, a majority of Americans had come to oppose the Vietnam War, but greater numbers opposed the antiwar movement. Nixon cannily positioned himself as upholding law and order—a helpfully ambiguous phrase that lumped together the threats of rising crime, urban riots and rowdy left-wing activism. His invocation of the “silent majority” aimed to bring together those who were put off by the noisy, disruptive and politically extreme protests. Trump, who has openly borrowed Nixonian terms like “law and order” and “silent majority,” has already been using the confrontations with his administration’s officials to shift the discussion from his immigration policies and onto the left’s behavior.

Dick Durbin: Blocking Trump's Supreme Court pick more important than red state Dems getting re-elected

A top Democrat in the Senate said his vulnerable colleagues from red states "understand" that fighting to stop President Trump's Supreme Court pick is more important than getting re-elected in 2018.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., was pressed on this "dilemma" that Democrats face as the 2018 midterms approach during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Staying united to stop the Supreme Court pick could cost you red state senators. Not fighting it as hard might allow the red state senators to get re-elected and get Democrats in control of the Senate. That's your dilemma," host Chuck Todd posited on Sunday.

The problem being is most of the Blue Senators in Red States would end up swaying away from party solidarity and voting for the SCOTUS nomination anyway. Manchin, Tester and Heitkamp would likely cross the aisle for political survival.

When they get their asses kicked in the midterm elections, I wonder who they will blame then? Surely not the Russians...

Will they finally realize it’s their own damn fault?

no, you will continue to see both parties doubling down.

Eating their own. Sad when I say I'd prefer to see a Feinstein over that mouthbreather she's running against. Devil you know and whatnot.

California Dems snub Sen. Dianne Feinstein for longshot rival, in 'clear-eyed rejection' of party establishment | Fox News

The California Democratic Party issued a stunning rebuke of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Saturday by decisively handing its official endorsement to state Sen. Kevin de Leon, her longshot Democratic challenger.

The move was the latest sign that establishment Democrats are facing something of a national insurgence, coming on the heels of last month's shock win by 28-year-old Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over high-ranking Rep. Joe Crowley in a closely watched New York primary.

In backing de Leon, a majority of the party's 360-member executive board ignored Feinstein's calls to stay neutral in the race. Her allies had warned an endorsement would only further divide Democrats.

The final vote margin was lopsided: A total of 217 delegates voted for de Leon, of Los Angeles, or nearly 65 percent of the delegates. Meanwhile, only 22, or 7 percent, cast ballots for Feinstein and 94, or nearly 30 percent, voted for no endorsement.

* GOP gubernatorial candidate Randy Boyd says he opposes giving illegal immigrants access to the in-state four-year college tuition rate, but is still listed as serving on Obama’s College Promise Campaign board which is working to make state community college scholarships like the Tennessee Promise, available to Illegal immigrant students.

* Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd has donated $250,000 to Nashville nonprofit Conexion Americas to expand its culinary incubator and entrepreneurship program.

The donation from Boyd and his wife, Jenny Boyd, marks the largest individual gift to the nonprofit in its 14-year history, Conexion Americas announced this week.

Founded in 2002, the nonprofit’s mission is to build a welcoming community and create opportunities for Latino families.

Lieberman slams Ocasio-Cortez, urges voters to pick Joe Crowley | Fox News

Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic senator, appealed to voters in New York's 14th Congressional District on Tuesday to vote in November for top Democrat Joe Crowley and not the Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In a scorching article for the Wall Street Journal, Lieberman, who’s now an Independent, criticized Ocasio-Cortez’s agenda as “more Socialist than Democratic” and said her presence in Congress will “make it harder for Congress to stop fighting and start fixing problems.”

But now she faces pushback from moderate voices who fear her firebrand Democratic Socialist brand may actually hurt the party’s future prospects.

“[House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi] knows that if Democrats are to regain a majority, it will be by winning swing districts with sensible, mainstream candidates. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is making that task harder across America,” Lieberman wrote.

“Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America, whose platform, like hers, is more Socialist than Democratic. Her dreams of new federal spending would bankrupt the country or require very large tax increases, including on the working class,” he continued. “Her approach foresees government ownership of many private companies, which would decimate the economy and put millions out of work.”

I certainly hope the DNC continues it's McCarthy-esque "big Russian scare" into 2020.

No joke. He has them literally pining for McCarthy. Maybe he is a genius

Ex-FBI head James Comey urges public to vote Democratic - CNNPolitics

"This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders' design that 'Ambition must ... counteract ambition.' All who believe in this country's values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don't matter right now. History has its eyes on us," he wrote.

"This was the day an American president stood on foreign soil next to a murderous lying thug and refused to back his own country. Patriots need to stand up and reject the behavior of this president," Comey said on Twitter.

They don’t care. The left has embraced bush era neo-cons who they used to compare to nazis all because they’re part of the never-trump cabal

That's like saying you are no long distracted by the splinter in your finger after your leg is crushed in an accident. Doesn't change the splinter, just the perspective.

If nothing else, Trump re-calibrated everyone's perspective.
