'19 FL QB Brian Maurer Commits to UT

I know it's the offseason, but some of you guys are insufferable. Let the new coaching staff sign and develop a class or two before criticizing each and every commitment.

One note after watching the highlight video: Do any high schools in Florida play defense?

Absolutely nobody forgets that.

But what people also remember is that getting to the top of of UT’s all-time rushing leaderboard isn’t a huge accomplishment because we’ve never had great running back be the sole, primary guy for more than a year or two (certainly never 3 or 4 years) and the total just isn’t that high.....and we also remember watching Hurd, who never had even a single 50 yard run in nearly 600 rushes, who ran for 2, 1, 0 or negative yardage in more than half of his carries and who had a well below average collegiate average yards per carry. We also remember that we’ve had a lot of much better running backs than Hurd at Tennessee over the years and despite finishing top 10 in terms of rushing yards all time, that he doesn’t make the list of top 10 running backs at Tennessee all-time.

I also remember him having a good line ONE year out of his 2.5 yeara here.

I remember him recovering the fumble against App State.
I remember him running through that tackle for pivotal 1st down against South Carolina in Columbia that saved our reason.

I remember him running all over Alabama's national championship defense as we took the lead in late in the 4th qtr.

KB, how many former players have to come out and tell you about Butch Jones? Hurd was taking much more punishment than even a rb should.
Damn even Alvin Kamara said Butch didn't know wtf he was doing.
Hurd's mom did him no favors with her words.

But just look at the tape! Yeah he didn't have one over 50. But he had many over 20 running and receiving. Possibly the best pass blocking RB we've ever had...
People were talking about Dark Horse Hiesman after the Iowa game. The next year Iowa almost made the play off! Hurd ALWAYS moved the pile forward.

With all that said. He DID quit on his team.
But you tell me honestly was he the only one?? In truth Butch lost his team many times over. And many players quit that stayed on the team.

With a decent line he breaks the UT rushing record midway though his Jr year. That has to count for something KB...

We may not like Hurd, but he was a fine back. 3100 yards from scrimmage and 26 TDs in 2.5 seasons is pretty darn good.

Was he a quitter/baby? Maybe. I have no idea what kind of circus Butch was running behind the scenes.

No matter how much you dislike him, you can't diminish what Hurd did behind such a poorly coached line and in a scheme that was ill suited for him.

For all the 3* critics, this is Florida, and not every QB can be a 4 and 5*, not sure you understand how that gets computed. It takes a lot of time, money and traveling to get your stars, and he was an elite 11 finalist, runs a 4.5 can make all the throws..........., I think Helton has seen enough QBs to know who has "it"...........so, can anyone name the last 5* QB that has gone on to the NFL and lived up to all the hype.........without looking it up? fyi Tim Tebow was a 5* and we know how that turned out. here is a list:

2002 – Vince Young (Texas), Trent Edwards (Stanford), Ben Olson (BYU).

2003 – Kyle Wright (Miami).

2004 – Rhett Bomar (Oklahoma), Xavier Lee (Florida State), Anthony Morelli (Penn State), Chad Henne (Michigan).

He then stayed and suddenly no I Formation happened.

Was seriously banged up and Butch didn’t care.

Had major mid back pain and a concussion and begged to switch spots.

Was too big and needed the ball after a few steps and never got it.

Still did what he did under that bs scheme.

Hurd isn’t perfect. Can be a bit of a spoiled brat but he wasn’t some toxic kid on the program.

He isn’t the best rb ever. I think Stephens, Lewis and Henry were all better but Hurd was damn good.

He was wasted by Jones just like Kamara was. Hurd left for personal health. Was almost 6’4 when he left and still growing. Back was jacked. Butch didn’t given the slightest damn.

Butch was a moron. The minute he no longer had Dobbs to mask his horrible play calling we lost every sec game. That’s a fact. No Dobbs, no sec wins.

Dobbs would end up running for 15 yards or more half the time his stupid play did nothing. And Hurd was hurt because the idiot coach gave him the ball and then said run and it was obvious when we were going to run. My wife could call the plays. He only got yards cause he dragged defenders with him.

But .... he DO good.

Put him in the right offense with an o line and the kid would have had amazing numbers. He was a great blocker too. I'll never forget him picking up the blitz and pre snap holding his hand up and taking the defender to come on. Hurd was a beast stunted by Butch and company. I don't blame him for getting out of here like many others did

Sorta this.

Hurd is a talented young man. Powerful runner, eye-opening backfield blocker, very capable receiver when put in that role. It is a credit to him that he was on track to break our rushing record, even if that record is not the tallest of tall orders.

But he will never live down quitting on his team mates. The coaching is beside the point, mid-season. You don't like the situation, you quit after the season's over. While it plays out, you stay for your team mates. You stay for duty and for loyalty.

Jalen didn't. He quit.

I hope he has a wonderful life and does incredible things. Finds joy. Learns the secrets of simple happiness.

But he never gets a do-over on quitting on his team mid-season. That's one he lives with.

Butch pulled us out of the dumpster then drove us back into one. We're still in the off season after his last year. Expecting people not to criticize him before the new coach has coached a game isn't very realistic. It's hard to talk about last year's team and what that means for this year without discussing Butch's faults. Next year we will be taking about them as a basis for comparison for CJP. I'm not seeing how that is unreasonable.

For ther record, Hurd shoulders the blame for leaving when and how he did. He will pay for that. Butch shoulders the blame for creating the situation that lead to it. He'll pay for that. Plenty of blame to go around.

Amsler was tough as nails, once he got a head of steam good freakin luck. He was a fullback that could play tailback, he caught the ball pretty well to. I would take a Amsler over Hurd anytime.
