Yeah. But it has to suck to try your very hardest at the thing you have chosen to make your life's work and still come up short.
We all love Pruitt now, but let him lose a couple games and people will start comparing him unfavorably with toilets as well. It's not an easy profession. They did their best. It wasn't good enough. At the end of the day that's why I can't get on board with Pruitt until he gives me a reason to get on board -- I thought both Dooley and Butch had "it," that they would figure out what it took to right the program, and both of them flamed out. I still feel bad for them as people who wanted desperately for it to work out as I envisioned it.
If we had had an AD with any cohones, Butch would have been gone after we totally underachieved in 2016 and all the assistants saw the writing on the wall and bolted.
You don't think Saban choosing to hire a guy says anything about said coach? Saban doesn't hire bums. Especially not two different times. The only bum he would hire would be for an intern that knocks down 35k a year. The Dez Bryant being the coach stuff is an opinion on your part. Ask anyone who knows anything about the league, and they'd tell you it's extremely difficult to coach diva wideouts like Bryant. Some of Dooley's receivers declined in production, not all. If you keep a job in the NFL for 5 years you have to be bringing at least a little something to the table.
It's a little different in college. When you're at a cellar dweller like Mississippi State, you're just not on a level playing field with Bama, LSU, Auburn, and A&M. I don't think Mullen is some dyamite coach, but he is very good. They'll win 9 and 10 on the regular down there, which might not be acceptable for them.

There really is only one measuring stick as to how good a coach is. Winning games. Butch won more. You say that Butch was a better recruiter. For someone who is such a stargazer, I would think that you would realize that part of the job is incredibly important. Also, just because someone is a good assistant coach (according to Saban) does not mean that they will be a good head coach. Dooley provided plenty of evidence regarding that. What has he done since he left Saban's staff? Absolutely freaking nothing. La Tech, Tennessee and the Cowboys. He flat out sucked.
