Butch Jones hired Larry Scott, Walt Wells, Mike Canales and Kevin Beard lol. All four ended up being terrible hires. Neither one were good football coaches, but I think on the field, Dooley was better at X's and O's/football IQ. To say Jones was bad at this level in those two areas would be an understatement. Saban hired him two different times, and tried to a third time. Best Jones could do was get on as an intern.

True. True true.

What's the difference then?

New hypothesis-- you get more flies with sugar than you do with $hit?

Butch, the salesman he was, put on a better face for Tennessee than Dooley did? Because Dools was a world-class a-hole right? Didn't he alienate himself from a lot of the in-state high schools, not to mention our own former players..

He definitely did. I actually liked Dooley better. I thought he was legitimately funny even though I knew he was a prick. Jones on the other hand, was a complete phony, but tried to pretend like everyone else was the problem. I still wish I had a chance to throw a water balloon or something of that sorts at him for trying to make the fanbase be cool with bowl championships.

Dooley did a great job with his initial hires and his 3rd year probably would have been pretty good if his DC doesn't abandon ship. But he was never gonna be good enough to keep those coaches since they were all better coaches than him. And he couldn't recruit. So he was destined for failure. Lawyer imo.

chief vol reminds me of somebody....just can't place it

He reminds me of Bruin because their posts always read...

"This post is hidden because (Insert Annoying Poster Here) is on your ignore list."

It's crazy how they both always poster the exact same thing.

Butch was better than Dooley.

Indeed.

I'll always be thankful he ended that stupid streak against Florida. I know...should've ended in 2014, and we should be riding a 4-game winning streak over those losers, but that was still the best game I've ever attended. I'll never forget it, and I'm so grateful I was there to watch it happen.

Evidence says otherwise. Bring facts, not opinions please.

Delivered our first 8 loss season in program history to us, and thought everyone should let it slip. Had a losing record against Vanderbilt. Lost to Kentucky. Lost to two inferior South Carolina teams. Was thought of as such a sorry coach that he couldn't land a halfway decent gig after he got handed his walking papers at Tennessee, that he eventually was hired as an intern. At least Dooley had two different stints in the NFL and was hired by Saban on two different occasions. I'm not saying Doofus was good, because he obviously wasn't, but he was a better football coach than Jones.

I liked Dooley and Butch both. They both brought things to the table I thought the program needed at the time. Ultimately, I was wrong about them. Neither worked out. I appreciate that they tried their hardest. I hope Pruitt can do better.

Yeah. But it has to suck to try your very hardest at the thing you have chosen to make your life's work and still come up short.

We all love Pruitt now, but let him lose a couple games and people will start comparing him unfavorably with toilets as well. It's not an easy profession. They did their best. It wasn't good enough. At the end of the day that's why I can't get on board with Pruitt until he gives me a reason to get on board -- I thought both Dooley and Butch had "it," that they would figure out what it took to right the program, and both of them flamed out. I still feel bad for them as people who wanted desperately for it to work out as I envisioned it.

Dooley lost to uk too, wash. Butch also beat a top 10 sc team. Atleast butch won bowl games. Getting hired by saban doesnt quantify how good of a coach someone is. Dooley was puppet at dallas. Dez bryant was the real coach of the wide receivers at dallas (you seen the clip of dooley backing down to dez). And how come all of the cowboys wr declined in production when dooley arrived?

Butch also won a championship at cincy and cmu (if memory serves me correctly). All in all, what has dooley won as a college football head coach? I will wait again... if you (which I already did for you in a previous post) compare butch's and dooley's time here, butch is superior to dooley in every category other than your feelings.

Seems like they're both hard-headed.

Dooley couldn't get along with Lance Thompson and Justin Wilcox.

Butch wouldn't get rid of his loyal CMU/Cincy staff, and when he did, he wouldn't let Shoop bring his guys over from PSU.

Yeah I suppose. I have not always been successful at everything I set out to do. However, if I tried something and wasn't good at it, I moved on to something I was better suited for. Butch might be a top notch recruiting coordinator. Dooley might be a top notch.... uhhh.... top notch.... shower coordinator? The point is, they are both poor to mediocre head football coaches and maybe they need to try something else for a while.

Boring time of year when all there is to talk about with football is which is better between Dools and Lyle. I wish I had slept through those 8 years. That way I would have been well rested for the excitement coming in the CJP era.

Just wish I got paid multi-millions to not work when I wasn't successful.
This is a crazy and F upped world.

I agree with you. But they didn't know until they knew...I'm sure they both thought they could fix it until it became obvious they couldn't, in other words.

I look at it like this. I'm a professor at a good-sized university in Georgia that is not UGA. If I got a super lucrative offer from, say, Princeton or Harvard or Stanford or Michigan or Cal or Yale, which would be probably the professorial equivalent in my field of a head coaching position at a place like Tennessee, I would sink my teeth in and give it my all to prove to myself, and to everyone else, that I've got what it takes to succeed at the highest level. But maybe, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get my research to hit at the highest ranked publications. Ultimately, at the end of my probation, I get the axe. It would suck. And it would reveal to me that maybe I'm not cut out for those top-tier schools. But I would like to think it doesn't diminish who I am as a person and I would like to think all the folks at X University don't hate me just because I came up short of their expectations.

There's more to life than money. It helps, no doubt, but to try your best at the thing you want to devote your life to and fail...I'm not sure any amount of money can take away that hurt.
