He knew endorsing McCain was his exit from the party. Get a clue. Why do you think he supported McCain over Obama? Because the democratic party had progressed beyond where he was willing to go, and McCain and the republican party had progressed to his comfort level.

The bigger issue is why did the repubs. refuse the Lieberman nomination and insist on Palin? Because of the extreme right dragging the tail end of progress.

He ran in his primary as a D. He lost his primary so he created his own party. He only lost that primary bc he pissred of the Dem base. He supported McCain bc A.) they are friends and B.) he was being considered for VP by McCain. McCain was facing an uphill battle against Obama and knew. That’s why he was considering him.

McCain not only considered it, he preferred it. The right wing vetoed it and you got Palin in return.

Maybe they didn’t want a lifelong Democrat being part of the ticket? You know the same guy who voted with Democrats 90% of the time while in the senate. I’m sure Democrats would have loved the idea of Marco Rubio as Hillary’s running mate.....

He left the Democratic Party because he lost the 2006 Democratic primary in Connecticut to Ned Lamont. He was still nearly in lockstep with Democrats on social and economic issues but drifted away from them because of foreign policy.

And he didn’t lose any of his senior senate positions until after he supported McCain. In fact Obama stepped in to stop Reid from kicking him out of senior spots.
