it went really well, said henry, whos ranked by 247sports as the no. 2 overall junior-college prospect and no. 1 juco inside linebacker in the 2019 class.the facilities were nice. The coaching staff was nice. I met a few players. The players were nice. It was just a really nice experience overall. theyre my leader right now. There aint no doubt.
it was more about academics than it was on the football field, henry said. that was really big to me. They talked about how its the most important thing besides playing football, because they know im a good football player. They really focused on me getting my degree.
(pruitt) told me, if im not focused on getting my degree, then i dont need to come play for tennessee. He was like, he knows he can coach me to be the best player that i can be, and hes going to get that out of me. But he mainly focused on me getting my degree. It wasnt really a lot of football talk. It was more academic.
hes very laid-back, henry said. hes a laid-back guy. Hes an old-school coach, i can tell. I like him. Hes a good coach, i think. I think hes going to turn tennessee around i really do. he has a really good background. He coached for a bunch of winning football programs, and he has a lot to show for it with the players that went to the nfl thats been coached under him and stuff. Hes got a real good resume.
its going to be earlier, he said. honestly, tennessee set the bar kind of high, so the other schools that im going to, if they dont reach that bar, then ive really got my decision made.
Its early in a way, just because Henry hasnt been on any other visits. But its also not that early because hes planning to make a decision before his season starts, and I think its a good sign for Tennessee that it was the first school to get him on campus. I think the Vols made a big impression on Henry and his mother, and while hes obviously still considering other options, the fact that hes calling them his leader and saying they set the bar high bodes well for Tennessee.
The middle linebacker spent Friday and Saturday at Tennessee and quickly became enamored with the Vols. Following the visit, the future blue-chip linebacker told VolQuest, Tennessee is No. 1 right now. No doubt.
I enjoyed the coaching staff. They were really nice people. The facilities, the stadium, they were insane. Everything about Tennessee. Tennessee set the bar high. Basically. Henry, who holds 15 offers, had 110 tackles, 13.5 TFLs, 1 interception and 2.5 sacks in his first season at Dodge City. He has three years to play two at the next level and plans on enrolling at his school of choice in January.
They said I was very violent when I got to the ball. They told me I can defend the pass and the run and thats somebody they need at linebacker, he said. Coach Pruitt is a really good coach. Hes got a really good resume. I think hes going to turn Tennessee football around honestly.
While Tennessee currently sits in the catbird seat for the physical middle linebacker, Henry has plans to see Ole Miss, Nebraska and Alabama three schools recruiting him hard in the coming weeks. Texas A&M and Texas want to get him on campus soon, too. Then a decision could be forthcoming.
Tennessee is at the top of my list right now, but I have so more schools to visit first. Im going to visit more schools soon and then well see how it goes from there, but Tennessee is No. 1 right now, Henry said. I want to (commit) before I start my last year. It might be really soon honestly. Once I visit these schools Ill be able to make my decision.
Tennessee is in the drivers seat for Lakia Henry after his weekend trip to Knoxville. The four-star linebacker from Dodge City (Kan.) Community College spent all day Friday and several more hours Saturday taking a closer look at the Vols on his first-ever recruiting visit to a four-year college. It should come as no surprise that they made a strong impression on him, but his positive comments about Tennessee coming out of the weekend shouldnt be shrugged off as typical post-visit buzz.
Henry named the Vols his leader following the visit, and while he still wants to take more visits starting with a trip to Ole Miss this weekend sources indicated going into his trip to Knoxville that Tennessee already was in good shape with the Vidalia, Ga., native.
Henry has emerged as a priority for the Vols over the past couple of months, and they clearly have established themselves as the team to beat for him. Sources close to his recruitment believe they should have some staying power with him, too. By all accounts, Tennessee has made a strong impression on both Henry and his mother.
Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama and Nebraska, among others, also remain high on his list at the moment. But the Vols have set the bar high for Henry and might be tough to beat, given that they already have been the team recruiting him hardest over the past couple months.
As easy as it is to become disillusioned with how serious football staffs are about academics, Pruitt really does seem to care about that, and its really refreshing.
as opposed to the last staff? A bunch of Butch's recruits we got because we took academics seriously. I remember one of the LA DBs telling a story about LSU trying to get them to an easier degree, but UT was encouraging him to go for what he wanted.
