'19 JUCO LB Lakia Henry (Former UT commit)

ah, so it only matters when the current staff does it. I love the consistency of this place.

I never said that. The APR work Butch did is still underrated, IMO. It’s one of the only things he did consistently well.

But at the same time, arguing that we’d never have landed Bailey or Labruzza without Butch’s academic emphasis isn’t a great argument for that virtue. Dobbs? Sure. Two guys we’re trying to replace? Meh.

I remember CBJ making many references to the raised team APR while he was there, but I've just come to feel like it, like every thing else, was a hallow means to promote his worth to the program. I'm just rubbed the wrong way by it now (which sucks because it is a laudable acheivement). It seems different to me to hear about it from recruits in the form of tough love. I don't know. Perception. It changes.

IIRC, we were ridiculously close to APR penalties. I don't mind giving Butch credit for managing his way out of that situation.

Butch received a $100,000 bonus for improving the APR. Conversely, he would have been fined $50,000 a year for letting it slip below the NCAA's penalty threshold. It's unlikely the man did anything at UT that wasn't driven by self-interest or his own financial gain. The Thornton Center did the heavy lifting on APR. It's one of the country's best and definitely a selling point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC, improvements to the Thornton Center and the staff there was one of the things Butch requested/fought for in his initial agreement with Dave Hart to become our coach. We didn't hire Scogin away from Mizzou until after we'd hired Butch.

You do understand that "this place" is made up of hundreds of fans with differing values, experiences, and opinions, right? Only a fool would expect "this place" to be consistent. But if it makes you feel superior to lump everyone into "this place," I guess you should do that.

Facility improvements, as well as expansions to staff and services, had been underway for several years before Butch was hired. When Donna Thomas returned full-time to AAD, a search committee recommended and vetted Joe Scogin, who had widespread support from both the athletic and academic sides. I'm sure Butch's input had considerable weight, but there were a lot of people involved. Once Scogin arrived, he implemented his vision.

If improvements had been underway for years until Butch and Scogin were hired, they were doing a really s***ty job of it. We were on the cusp of a bowl ban when those two arrived.

Well, Kiffin and Dooley weren't exactly known for discipline (of the non-shower variety), accountability or leadership, so no big surprise. Hart let it slide until he had to make it a priority. Whoever he hired as HC was going to have boosting APR contractually incentivized.

Don't a lot of top JUCO players have grade problems out of high school, thus sending them to JUCO?

Yes, and these are the exceptions I look for... those and high caliber players who transferred like Kamara That’s not who I specified in my post.

you see what happened when I brought up something slightly positive about Butch? It has been dissected and dismissed. The group think is strong here. yeah there are probably a bunch of different group thinks, but it doesn't change the reaction.

I really don't want to chime in on the past, but Butch did a lot of things well he just could not manage a roster and when you are a micromanager that will destroy you.

He did ok at some things, but he is a garbage football coach. He sucks at coaching football, which is the main prerequisite for the job..

Yep. Call a spade a spade. He knew how to sell (especially early on), had good football knowledge, and did well on the academics side. He was a terrible football coach, couldn’t manage a locker room, and didn’t make any in-game adjustments.

He did all these things. They aren’t mutually exclusive.

Agreed I wish that would be the end of it.

Exactly. The guys actual football knowledge and coaching ability was slim to none. That's why he was so robotic with all his responses and to any tough questions. He also had no ability to adapt to in game situations. He was always stuck to his system whether his personnel fit it or not. He did some of the "outside" (in many cases irrelevant) things fairly well, problem is the most important part of the job he was horrendous at.

Henry Saturday and Fields Sunday, IMO. That's eight stars on defense over the weekend. I like it.

Looks like he's a 5.9 4 star on Rivals. Is that a new ranking? I thought he was only ranked on 247.
