John Kelly to the Rams in 6th 176th overall

He made the right decision. He's an unfortunate casualty of the coaching change; Pruitt likes big backs and Kelly doesn't really fit as well into the Pruitt offensive philosophy. Also, he's a RB, and all RBs have a limited shelf life, so the sooner he starts collecting NFL paychecks, the better.

Now, Kahlil McKenzie on the other hand, absolutely would've been better off staying another year. He'll be lucky to get drafted late, but he could easily move into the top two rounds if he had a breakout Senior season under Pruitt; and he's actually a better fit in the Pruitt defense.

correct on both comments. Kelly will thrive as secondary RB. MAC may thrive as OL, but I think he had potential to be a round 1-2 guy on OL if he returned and spent a year showing folks what he can do. He could have been legendary at UT to fortify our OL, giving much needed senior leadership for Pruitt's "run first" mentality...wish him well.

Better than Hurd, not better than Kamara....although he ran with more power ....just two completely different styles.

I disagree 100% that Kelly is better than Hurd. I think Hurd gets a bad rap from many here because he quit. He was a freaking stud in 2015, making All-SEC first team. In a pro-style offense, I would take Hurd over Kelly in a heartbeat. Kelly is a good, hard runner. He's not Hurd though

If you are drafted I'm pretty sure you are given around a 3yr contract. No matter where you are drafted at, so being cut is usually not an option. However, maybe moved to the practice squad is.
late round picks are actually cut more often than UFA's

His ass should have stayed in school next year would have been his year. So many juniors declared early alot of kids didnt get drafted that was Juniors now they cant go back to school. I told my nephew to play all four years. Especially if u dont have a 1st round grade.

He prolly needs to stay for 6-7 then.

You're criticizing him for getting drafted and making hundreds of thousands, and potentially millions, of dollars instead of staying in school and risking injury for another year?

This post makes no sense. Nobody is "moved" to the practice squad. You MUST be cut (waived) first before being eligible for the PS.

Yes, these players are given 3 or 4 yr contracts but they are in reality three 1 yr contracts. There's nothing guaranteed to a 6th rd guy

In reading through this thread John Kelly's not the only one who overrates him.

He was borderline draftable. If you're a 6th rd guy then you don't come out early. If after a senior yr, you're still a 6th rd pick then you're not that impressive anyway.

I really liked Kelly's heart and energy, particularly in 2016. It was exactly what we needed after Hurd but that doesn't get you very far in the NFL. A guy his size had better have better than a 4.64 40 time. That's pedestrian.

The Cincinnati Bengals drafted a 6'5" 228 lb "possession" receiver very late in the 7th rd. He ran a 4.68 at the combine. He's considered a plodder/borderline TE. Auden Tate from FSU

Another possibility is that he stays in school and gets a degree in case he doesn't make it in the NFL.

It's not like he can't go back and finish his degree in the future.

He should. It's not quite as much fun to do it that way.

In looking at the LA Rams depth chart, JK had better make the team. There's pretty much no depth behind Gurley. If he can't crack that then he sucks

You're saying he sucks? I also don't think how much fun he'll have getting his degree is at the front of his mind.

And even if he doesn't make the 53 man roster with the Rams, worst case scenario is he ends up on a practice squad with somebody. That's over $7,000 per week during the season...

The 4-year minimum base salaries for players in this year's draft are as follows: $465,000 (Year 1), $540,000 (Year 2), $615,000 (Year 3), $690,000 (Year 4). If eventually signed to a contract, each rookie drafted will get a 4-year deal, whereas undrafted rookies are only eligible for 3-year contracts.(2017)

Name the last time they won a home playoff game or did anything of note.

Doesn't mean they're not a class organization. They make it to the playoffs almost every year so they're doing something right. Players love playing there and the fans are great.

So this is about “FUN”? Think Pruitt’s going to be issuing a ton of that do ya? :)

I was very clear in what I said. I said that if he can't make that roster then he sucks.

I'm sure that $7K/week will be available to him after a senior season at UT

You were definitely clear, it's just a stupid, childish point of view. I had to make sure you were actually serious.

In what world will he be making that kind of money with a Bachelor's degree right out of college?

As clear as I was, you still missed it.

For a third time, I said that the Rams RB depth chart is so weak, he sucks if he can't crack it. That is a totally separate issue from $7K/week and whether he stays in school.

My point on the practice squad is that players don't come out early so they can make a practice squad and earn $7K/week for 2 or 3 yrs. If their goals are that low then they really ought to stay in school for 4 yrs and get that degree. That PS job will still be available to him in 2019.

Unless he blows a knee out or other injuries or he doesn’t fit what Pruitt’s implementing and becomes less of a prospect. Buncha unknowns. The only FACT is he came out and was drafted. What he does with this chance is on him. True this year or next.

No guarantee he'll make the roster.
Should have returned.

He'll get picked up somewhere even if he doesn't make the Rams.

A good 2018 and good reviews from Pruitt and co probably could have gotten him into the mid rounds and guaranteed money. But there's also the possibility of injury and falling out of the draft completely (which some say is better than getting picked in the 6th/7th anyway).

Hard to say whether this was the right call or not for him.
