Is this the most depressing time in UT history?

How?

And just so I know, what is a "proper" buyout?

You’re trolling right? How? Well our up and coming coach wouldn’t have been able to leave in the middle of the night. A real financial penalty would have prevented it or at least given us more cash to throw around afterward. Hamilton should have had something higher than $800k after 14 months to be proper.

No, I'm not trolling. Yes, I agree the buyout contract was too low, but I'm arguing your statement "We just screwed it all up with the lack of buyout". The buyout was not what screwed everything up.

Maybe Im just way wrong, but how much would have been too much for him to be able to leave? I just think he would have gone no matter how much it was. And if it had been more and a realistic amount, would it really have made a difference on who we hired?

I don't know, but I think not.

I’ve been a Tennessee fan for 55 years. I will always be optimistic.

That said, these last 10 years have sucked. The worst stretch in my history.

But we will get better.

We just had our worst season ever.
We just had the worst coaching search ever.
Bama is rolling as usual. UGA has a real coach. UF hired a quality coach. Muschamp owns the Vols. Looks like we’re headed for 3rd or 4th in the East every season.

Has UT football ever been in a more depressing position? I’m almost 40 and have never seen our position in the landscape like this.

Not for me, 2017 was the worst. This is 2018, there is literally no where to go but up and that is good.

Unfortunately I’m older then you so I can remember the late 50s and early 60s. We had a few big wins, ie beating lsu and auburn when they were very good, but lost to f.s.u., right after they had taken up football. Worse yet we lost to Chattanooga. The s.e.c. Was not as deep as now, so our overall win loss record was not as bad as last year, but it lasted several years. Basketball was pretty bad too. Coach Dickey and Mears started a great run for u.t. Hopefully it will get better. At least our players played hard and didn’t quit.

There is no tangible evidence that Pruitt will do good here. I would have rather hired a coach with some previous HC experience such as Mike Bobo over Pruitt who i don’t think will handle the pressure and fans and media very well. I mean we are already witnessing that.

You prefer a coach with head coaching experience like Dooley and Jones had over a Dickey or Fulmer?
Facts are Tennessee, in my 50+ yrs as a fan,has only hired 1 standing head coach that was a success (John Majors) and he’d be fired today after yr 5 (5-6) . Most successful hires clearly were Dickey and Fulmer, neither being a head coach previously.

No, the worst is behind us.

Butch Jones was fired and the best OC in the SEC was just replaced with Dooley.

Also for the first time in 6 years, bama didn't have the top recruiting class.

If Pruitt and friends can recruit as advertised we will be ok. If not we will get a new coach.

USC JR is not a long term threat. They don’t have the facilities to compete with us. The reptiles are a threat but Miami, F State and GA are all doing well and will take the best talent in FL. I see GA as the Bama replacement when Nick retires.

We must hope Smart isn’t that smart.

Random post in meaningless thread [no offense to starter of meaningless thread since it just found its value]. Had a "run-in" with EA downtown this afternoon during Dogwood Expo. Shocked how big that joker is, but has normal size hands:ermm:. He was gracious to take time to chat about the future of TN ball. Then I realized that for some of us we just keep towing the VOL agenda and the majority keep crying about a what we wish would happen. Thanks Erik for introducing yourself to me and helping to draw the line between Tennesse Vols and the rest who feed off of us.
p.s. We need a coach who says we suck if its obvious

Not Florida or South Carolina.

Florida is a hot mess, just like we've been, and South Carolina has a ceiling that isn't far above our floor.

Agree with you on Georgia, Bama, and Auburn.

In arguably the worst years in Gator football 30-year recent history, we managed to beat them only 1 time. Granted, some of the losses were down to the wire - but those don't count. We're 1-9 against them in the last decade. We look up to their suck. I hate UF and I'm tired of losing to them for all the wrong reasons mostly.

I don't know about this season or the next, but by Pruitts third season I suspect that all the players who don't want to put up with the program that he wants to put in place at Tennessee will have left. Then, we will just have the players who want to be as tough as he is working them and training them to be. 146 reps in a scrimmage is off the hook. So even if this season is not as good as we would like it to be, I see nothing but good days ahead. Unless the volnation and the players just completely reject the system that he is putting in place and everything goes to hell in a handbasket, we will be better than last season!

For me the most depressing time is any time we lose to Kentucky or Vanderbilt. And if it happens in the same year, well... nothing worse.

Facilities seem to be a non-factor. KY, USCe, Vandy...none of them needed top notch facilities to beat UT.

I was around for the Battle/Majors transition. Seemed pretty low for a while then. But losing the last game we've played against every one of the 13 other SEC teams makes this measurably lower than that low.

You make a good point. But that was then, this is now. We are undefeated in 2018.
