Recruiting Discussion

Not sure. I wasn't following hoops recruiting as closely then. Most of the Pearl tenure I was still a youngin raisin hell and watched all the games but wasn't plugged into the behind the scenes stuff. I listened to sports talk shows and watched the games. I didn't get on VQ til the Dooley era and started really following recruiting then.

Got you. I guess I was a recruiting nerd when I was young and raising hell. Lol

I recall wanting Ron Mercer more than I wanted the co-eds. Dang I was sad

I think it went in spells for me but there wasn't a ton of hoops recruiting to follow prior to Pearl. I remember following Fulmer classes but my hard core recruiting interest didn't really crank up til around 2010.

Are we only allowed so many official visitors? And if so i wonder how many times a player has been silent to a team and thier coach tells them to play like your really interested in a school just to get a wasted OV?

Yes there is a limit but I don't recall how many. It's well higher than we use though iirc. 20 maybe

The only thing we would waste in that scenario is time. We are limited on OV's but we aren't approaching our limit.

Good Information!

My take is that we may not play the 100% saleman pressure approach once they get on campus, like some coaches do. We probably let them know what it will really be like once they get in our practices. That way they will only come if they are willing to put in the time and effort. I believe this includes giving them time to think over their decision, and make sure it is what they want.

No sense in wasting a scholly on someone who isn't willing to be "all in." Of course, this will run some guys off, but saves us headaches on down the road.

It seems to me that high school football players get locked up by the college head coaches on their visits a lot more than basketball or baseball players do.

I know it’s not likely given the seemingly lack of room we will have, but Ikey Obiagu has requested his release from FSU. Freshman so he would sit 1 and then have 3 years left to play, 7’ 240lbs and very mobile, last year he averaged: 10.7mpg 2.3ppg 2.6rpg 2.1bpg...played behind some experienced quality bigs at FSU, he would be a helluva replacement for Kyle.

Didn’t we recruit him?

One school making a major push is Tennessee. The Volunteers are making it clear to Springer that he is a priority recruit, and so far he likes where things stand with the coaching staff in Knoxville.

"They stay in close contact and they really want me to go there," said Springer of the Volunteers. "I am very close with some of the coaching staff, and they have been following me closely. It is a school like a lot."

Springer plays for Bobby Maze’s AAU team so besides being in on him early they have that connection as well. 2020 class also features Keon Johnson out of middle Tennessee who is also a likely 5 star, he plays for former Vol Mark Grififn’s AAU team, Vols have been in early there and also have a connection to that one. Will definitely likely be 2 marquee names that Tennessee will be involved with for awhile.

I kind of wish you hadn't confirmed my post. Now we are going to have to hear Ziti say how terrible an approach it is a lot.

It’s only a terrible approach if/when the wins/NCAAT appearances stop coming...if we continue to win 20+ games and make the NCAAT every year then it can’t be considered a terrible approach. Now maybe it’s worth asking if he tweaked it a little and landed just a couple higher ranked guys would they win 2-3 more games and maybe advance another round or two in the NCAAT? Sure that might be fair, but obviously that question won’t be answered anytime soon.

Yes that's what I said at the first of this. The approach is working

BMaze needs to come through here.
