Recruiting Discussion

Need to survive the Florida visit and I think we have a good chance.

I agree we have a good chance still, but it amazes me how much we struggle to lock guys up. There’s been a lot of guys visit here and then take other visits, some still have ended up at Tennessee and some haven’t, but we seemingly rarely lock a guy up while he is here.

This goes back to the first class when we were thought to be getting the 4* who chose VCU.

Seems like we really struggle to close the deal.

Yup, Deriante Jenkins. You can go down the list, even guys who ended up here didn’t commit while here or shortly after. I think Jordan Bone dragged on for awhile after his OV, same for Fulk, Grant I believe took visits after Tennessee. There’s many more examples as well.

Imo we don't struggle to close the deal but it's much more about recruiting approach by Barnes.
I think it's clear that he encourages recruits to wait until they are sure. It's a nonpressure approach that works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't

I guess I am just not terribly familiar with other schools and their ability to lock down commitments immediately after visits. I know Tennessee has struggled in that area, but is that a deviation from the norm? I just can't remember a lot of clear examples of other schools locking kids down following an OV, especially a kid's first and only OV. Admittedly though, I may just not pay all that much attention to it.

And to be clear, I am talking about schools that recruit on the same level as Tennessee. Not UK, Duke, UNC, etc.

We struggle to close the deal.

You may have a reason why that happens but there’s no denying it happens.

There was a quote from Barnes sometime back that he encourages kids to take more visits to make sure tenn is a good fit. I am just saying you can't struggle to close a deal when you encourage the client to take their time

I mean you can struggle to close the deal on recruits when your approach is wrong. Not saying it’s right or wrong, just seems like it doesn’t work that well.

That is a terrible strategy

For smaller recruits, when we’re their biggest offer, ya that seems like a great idea. For top 100 recruits seems like you either want the first visit to get the commitment, or the last visit to get the freshest impression. Just my opinion.

I disagree because of the long run. In the long run it builds trust. There is very little decommittjmg in hoops but football should learn from the slower approach. In the end there are less transferring as well imo

Disagree for a lot of reasons but mostly because your points are only applicable if you land the recruit which we have not.

It's only a bad approach if the results cause a program to achieve less than it would have using a pushy used car saleman approach. Imo the results show the approach is working

Now we are getting into the Barnes doesn't miss talk. Whatever floats your boat.
