Pruitt not happy with Spring Game attendance

Give everybody a participation trophy and a good sportsmanship medal for doing nothing and they will be content but make them work for it and all of a sudden what seemed easy becomes a whole new animal. Getting better as a team is going to be hard and not giving the Vol hating media some reason to talk about our fan base will not be easy as well. This is exactly the kind of B.S. they crave so lets not feed the a$$holes this stuff.

Grow a pair. Nothing wrong with what he said. Although given the fragile feelings of people these days, maybe we should not have wanted a real football coach. Maybe we needed another life champion that will coddle the fans.

What is a "real" football coach? Is that like a "real" American?

Bless your heart:sad: you sound like Sarah Palin. Your posts sound like you're in her intellectual neighborhood as well

65000 isn't awful especially with expectations for the season being so low. Fans will show up for the games hopefully we'll have a defense or we'll find our offense is so awesome that no defense can stop it.

“Our fans today were like our football team. Some were here and doing great, some weren’t here for legitimate reasons, and some should have been here and weren’t...

What was the real potential for attendance? How many ppl had every opportunity to go and decided not? 1,000,000? 500,000? 100,000? If the latter then CJP needs to review the data. If 1,000,000 or even 250,000 then he has every right to *****.

That was his opinion and he shared it. He could have given us another cliche or coach speak but he didnt.

He should be grateful for what? Remember, we came after him. He wasnt knocking down our door begging for a job.

Given out coaching search and how many names we went through, yes, he should feel like he won the coaching lottery and be grateful. Especially since no one was knocking down his door and begging him to come coach.........until we did

swanson posted this in the RF, it's from Hubbs, and i think it probably sums up this issue the best.
A Sunday thought...

As we try to get all the recruiting updates we can, I have thought a good bit about Coach Pruitt's comments regarding yesterday's atmosphere and the fans as well as everyone's reaction to it.

Let me first say, I don't think Pruitt's comments are any kind of end of the world bad and I don't think it changes how fans feel about him in any significant way.

I do however think it was a comment better served not said.

Here's what I believe in covering this program for 24 years and living in Knoxville all my life.

Tennessee fans will show up. I was impressed by the amount of people that were there on Saturday. I thought it was a really good crowd. This fan base loves their football. They have passion for it and they will show up. Sporting event crowds are down around the country year after year. So the days of waiting lists and hard to get tickets are fewer and farther between but Tennessee fans will show. They always have and I believe that they always will.

But Pruitt and the athletic department have to be mindful of where Tennessee fans are mentally. Many are tired and beat up. It's been 10 years of a new start, of turning the page. It's been four coaches in a decade talking about how the team has to learn how to practice and about how they are trying to instill their culture, etc, etc.

Yes, I know it's just a game, but simply put this fan base has been through hell and with each passing change, people become more hesitant to just jump in with both feet. It's natural. It doesn't mean there's apathy. It doesn't mean they don't care. It just means the buy in takes on a little more of a slower approach.

In someways that's how the fans are also like some on this team. A team that's had 4 strength coaches in 4 years as well as three DL coaches, three wr coaches, three OC's, three OL coaches, 3 db's coaches in three years.

Phillip Fulmer says he know what good looks like and he's hired a coach that can restore Tennessee football. Tennessee fans also know what good looks like and they are hoping the fourth try since Fulmer was fired is the guy who can restore their program back to the glory days. But because the first three guys to try failed, some Tennessee fans are a little more unsure.

It's not that they don't like Pruitt or that they think he can't get the job done. They have just been down this road a lot the last decade.

and a final thought, from Hubbs via swanson....lol

It's not about putting someone on one side or the other. That's why there's such an inability to debate things.

If you disagree with Pruitt saying that, it doesn't mean you dislike Pruitt. It means you didn't agree with that comment.

I think it would have been better had he not said it.

I get his mentality and in many ways respect it. The guy is a winner. He's won everywhere he's been. So he doesn't understand a mentality where some might be hesitant about jumping all in. I understand why he wouldn't grasp that notion.

Doesn't make him a bad coach or a bad fit or anything like that. Just like it doesn't make a fan a bad fan for not coming to the game yesterday.

Here we go with the “true” fan argument.

No, I'm just saying that you people need to quit with your entitled fan mentality. Just like he has expectations of winning every game he has expectations of filling the stadium every game, and it seems to me he is trying to get the fan base to step up and have the whole of Big Orange Nation leading the charge of this team moving forward.

From the looks of it no one was knocking down his door either until Phil came calling. He was handed the keys to a top 10 program all time out of nowhere. I would be grateful if I were him.

Also, it looks like he has plenty of support even though he was an underwhelming hire and last resort. He should be grateful for that too.

It wasn’t a game, it was a glorified practice.

There are 868,000 people that live in the knoxville metro area, meaning within an hours drive. If all we got was 65,000 then yes he has every right to say it. That turnout is pathetic, especially with how much orange you probably could see at the mall or other places rather than the spring game.

Bama had 75,000 fans at their spring game in a town of 99,000. Tennessee couldnt break 65,000 in a city of 850,000. Still want to compare? The turnout was pathetic, as a fan that has never lived close enough to go to a game (went to one game in 99 when my family was given tickets)I could only wish to be there in attendance, yet there are some "fans" living within spitting distance that couldn't be bothered to go watch a free afternoon of football.
Birmingham is just right down the road only 58 miles from Tuscaloosa. So you can add 1.145M to your 99,000 In Tuscaloosa. With respect to those numbers we actually had better attendance. :good!:

You can also add that they have consistently been winning championships, are poised to make another run, and have arguably the greatest coach of all time.

So since we just add nearby cities for some reason let's add Chattanooga to knoxville then. There is a reason I used the census designations for the hometown area around each school, it's called consistency not subjectivity.

Comparing Bama to UT right now doesn’t make a lot of sense. One team just brought home another championship and the other won 4 games.

We've had our disagreements in the past, but you have been THE MAN on this thread. I really have to hand it to you, because you are really up against it with some of these guys.

Lol, i find this stuff amusing man. Its the age of interent communication i guess. Any opinion that is not the exact same as mine must be the extreme opposite and i must respond to that person accordingly. Instead, believing the other person is reasonable just with a slightly differing opinion. Its crazy man.

Dude 65k showed up to a spring game which is nothing more than practice. That number was good for 5th in the nation.

The guy thinks he is Saban already. Win some games first.

How’s that Schiano lawsuit coming along?

And still, you don't get it. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THIS FAN BASE HAS DONE FOR THE PAST 100 YEARS. If you don't show up now, then you are not currently doing all you can to support the team. If you are not supporting the team are you truly a Fanatic?

Showing up to a spring practice is the gauge for that? Lol
