Fulmer getting an extension as AD

Career politicians who serve for love of country or community are unfortunately a dying breed; that field is now dominated by those whose primary motivation is self-enrichment/aggrandizement.

Mr. Fulmer, as KB says, did not need the money and indeed must still have a lot of love for UT in spite of having been kicked to the curb in a way that would have killed that love in a lesser man. So give him some respect please.

He wasn't exactly kicked to the curb. He couldn't have made the kind of money he was paid while here at UT anywhere else. He was well compensated while coach here and frankly, let the program slide into mediocrity.

I'm glad he's AD, but some of our fans need to stop the BS about how bad he was treated. He sure didn't leave the program nowhere near the condition he got it in 1993

agreed. the end was bad. but he did do a lot of good prior to that. a lot more good than bad.

fortunately, enough time has passed that more see it for that than those last 2-3 years.

Sure he did more good than bad. I'm glad he's back and in a role he should have retired into in about 2002

eh, he was never going to retire, until he got to the # he wanted to get to as far as wins go. 2005 was his first losing season. no issue in giving the pass for that, even with the lofty expectations we had that year.

but after 2006...the writing was on the wall, and even i knew 2007 was fools' gold.

but he was never going to retire. he does have an ego, and at that point in time, he was extremely stubborn.

hence, the way those last 2-3 years playing out the way they did not being good at all.

and why so many had trepidation on him being in charge. i think he's taking the right approach to the AD gig though.

I don't have a problem with him being here for 4 years, but was the administration afraid he might take another job somewhere or just resign and go to the house?

I'm not seeing either of these scenarios as likely.

I thought he was going to have to learn the job and would struggle to do so...specially the business aspect. I own my wrong.

nah, i think it was more a stability move than anything.

i had doubts as well. i was fearful of the egotistical, stubborn version of Fulmer.

also glad to be wrong.

He's only been in the job a few months. He's doing a good job but he still has PLENTY to learn. It would be delusional to think otherwise

Clean that up for you. Did fine up to there. :eek:k:

He is doing a good job. He still has plenty to learn too.

Sorry, but my assessment is much more likely than yours, since your assessment applies to almost no one

What exactly was my “assessment” again? Bet you don’t remember.

What stability do we not have with a guy who has no other ambition than the job he has? Fulmer wasn't going anywhere, nobody was after him, and I doubt he was threatening to quit if he didn't get a long-term deal.

I have no issue with him being here for 4 years but an extension after being on the job less than 4 months?

Last time that happened the guys name was Charlie Weis and the school was Notre Dame.

hardly the same thing.

and w/out anything to back it up, it is something that could be used in negative recruiting against TN, for any of our sports.

i think it's really just something that can be put to bed, we have a solid administration that's not going anywhere, and coaches that can be supported by it.

that's about it. i don't think anyone is going to say that he got this extension for merit.

I think it is a huge mistake. The game passed him by years ago. He won by overwhelming talent and David Cutcliffe. He has a grudge about getting fired and will be meddling every chance he gets. Pay him 300k a year on a year to year contract. If he behaves, Renew his contract, if not, send him packing. It’s not like he’s a hot commodity not has he ever been since he was fired.

Don't agree with this line of thought....
Basically with a new BOT in place in the upcoming months I would rather have a bird in hand vs a BOT that can make a change in a moment's notice.

I trust Phil more than I do the BOT and the others...
One of the reasons we got into this mess was because of the Administration and the BOT.

Smaller BOT means votes can be bought and we could find ourselves in the same predicament if the BOT decides to make a move.

At least Phil will provide some stability between the fans, the BOT, Major Donors and the Administration. May not be the best choice, but be careful what you wish for in the future.

When have ADs at any school ever been a "Hot Commodity" LOL. He is the only commodity with a historical basis for being in the AD position...can't get much better than that....

I guess some thought Currie was a Commodity be he was just a puppet.

This all boils down to money guys. There is no way a long term contract should ever have been discussed Phil isn’t going anywhere. Lol no one else wants him. The last ten years have proven that. What he has though is some good friends that r still involved in ut athletics that agreed to throw some cash his way. Until people stop going to games, which they never will, ticket prices will continue to rise and buddies enriching buddies will continue

Nor should they. But not everybody is motivated to work solely by money....especially when you’re already sitting on a fortune and having to come out of retirement to take a job.

KB, this entire statement is an oxymoron.

Let's hope we are wrong. You all are talking like they have won something already. Quit letting your love for the return of black cleats seem like we won the SEC title.

I noticed the chaos and mess that was going on in the coaching search. He took over and that got resolved. Yeah...yeah...no GAME RESULTS. We’re victims of time in that aspect. I give a **** about the Say Yes To The Dress crap...I know what BETTER looks like.

So do I, and to say we have seen it yet is like giving a restaurant a great review before you even get seated.

And to Hell with black cleats.
