Yeah, I don't think we looked very good

From my seat, the scrimmage was more negative than positive. Of course, the bad conditions didn’t help.

There are some bright spots though. Callaway and Palmer are good at this WR thing. Tuttle is healthy and is disruptive. Kongbo and Taylor are much more suited to a 3-4 defense ( 3 sacks each).

No need to poor mouth that roster, it was what it was, and it wasn't great outside of a handful of stars. Was Kiffin's year at Rocky Top great? No, not at all, but I wouldn't call it a failure. As much as it pains me, I've got to give credit where credit is due. There were some bright spots: that UGA, Bama, S. Carolina stretch; making a serviceable OL (outside of Vs Tech) despite having to rely on 2 walk-on starters; and Crompton's progression.

I buy it in regards to that 2013 defensive roster. But we did have one of our best OL units in a long time in 2013, and the way Jones mishandled that was a coaching failure. To this day, I think Jones still believes his pee wee league offensive system can work in the big leagues with a pocket passer, smh.

Handful of stars is a handful more than many teams. Kiffin had some brilliance and some dud in that season. Gotta own both.

Handful of stars can be fool's gold if you are playing in the SEC, having to start 2 walk-ons on OL and at MLB, and the rest of your defense outside of about 3 guys aren't quite P5 level.

Last 2 sentences are very fair assessments of Kiffin's tenure.

I still disagree with your assessment of the rest of our roster that year. Even after Kiffin ran off about 20. :)

Saturday was also the first day his team went full speed to the ground tackling and not surprisingly the long time defensive coordinator wasn't pleased with how his defense performed.

“One thing that just jumps out to me is that we have to be a much better tackling team,” Pruitt offered. “Guys need a little bit better form to finish. On the offensive line we need to learn how to finish.

“Any time the ball was out on the perimeter today I didn’t see our O-lineman going and ‘peppering’ the defensive players, knocking them off the ball carrier.”

While there were physical concerns that Pruitt had for his team, there also were some mental issues according to the head coach. The goal in the first scrimmage was to find out who the best players on the team are, meaning they limited things schematically. Pruitt wanted to let the players play and with no coaches on the field see how they react to the good and the bad of football plays. Pruitt said he found out quickly his team has work to do emotionally.

“I could have turned my head while the ball was being snapped and not watched the play and then looked back around and I could have told you what happened without looking at the down and distance all based off body language. And that’s not a good thing,” Pruitt explained.

“There’s going to be adverse situations in the games. There’s going to be situations where things don’t go our way; how are we going to play? How are we going to respond?

Added Pruitt, “It’s like I told the guys out there today, there’s a reason they put four quarters on the scoreboard. You want to play well in all of them and obviously you want to play well on every play but there’s going to be times when things go your way and sometimes they’re not. The big thing that I saw was body language. To me, a lot of guys carrying their feelings on their shoulders. One of the most important things in any sport is to be able to keep your poise. Keep your poise, play the next play. That’s one thing we need to improve on for sure.”

The inability to keep their mental poise compounded itself through the scrimmage Pruitt said as both sides of the ball had too many unforced errors.

“Way too many penalties on both sides and they were all pre-snap penalties. Lack of discipline, some of it’s lack of poise, just being able to get lined up and function. We definitely have to improve there. The interesting part is when does it happen? Not a whole lot of penalties at the beginning of the scrimmage, but toward the end, where you start trying to figure out who has some mental toughness, who can sustain. That’s when the penalties show up. That definitely has to be addressed.”

Thanks. Hoping more folks who were there post on this and other forums. Would be fascinating to hear how individual players looked.

I’m ecstatic with the trench players who have commited thus far, but I’ve always been a running back fan.

Really can’t wait to see which back(s) commit to us this cycle, and if we can get a blue chipper at the position.

I would expound more, but I did t really keep my eyes on the field too much. I was keeping the outcome of every play

I have a good feeling about Crouch out of NC. Regardless, I think we’re gonna get our fair share. Might be later in the cycle than in the past.
