Recruiting Forum Football Talk LVII

Oh I definitely think we will see some guys emerge out of nowhere. Byrd could definitely be one of those. But I’m not buying that he didn’t make an impact because he was misused. He didn’t make an impact cause he didn’t make an impact.

I don't disagree with you, but attitude and effort can be heavily affected by leadership. Those things can be improved. It doesn't always happen but it is definitely easier to improve in those areas than athletic ability and speed. That is why coaches make so much money.

How do you determine which ones were misused or underdeveloped vs the ones that just didn’t make an impact?

I will say that if two completely different coaching staffs that have sufficient time can’t develop a player (e.g., Byrd), then it is the player’s fault. We’ve had 6 practices with Pruitt so it’s too soon to judge on any of these guys. But it will be interesting to watch over the course of this year.

Byrd, Kongbo, Philips and Richmond are some of the “elite” recruits Butch landed that haven’t lived up to the billing. Be interesting to see what Pruitt and staff can make of them. If they don’t develop it kind of makes me wonder if that’s how Butch landed them in the first place (i.e., other staffs had them lower on their boards and Butch was able to snag them).

Again all of this talk is fairly premature at this point.

Agreed on all points except all 4 of those mentioned were heavily recruited by other high profile teams.

If i had to bet on for sure spots:

Safeties- Warrior and Ab
Jack- Darrel taylor
Nose- Shy
End- Kongbo

Buchanan and Osborne at CBs?

Ab a for sure starter at safety? Things can obviously change, but if Pruitt has watched film of him, then I don't see how he starts him. His instincts for the position aren't great, he isn't very physical, and he's not good in space. The one thing he does have over others at the position is experience.

Not in the case of Byrd because I think he showed his freshman year that he could have been an awesome WR.

Man our whole passing game sucked last year.

I’m not saying you’re wrong about Byrd, you may turn out to be right. I just don’t think we will know for a few months. Impossible to measure the negative impact of the previous staff and team dysfunction at this point.

That’s true about our passing game but I think he also made himself a non factor for whatever reason.

Was thinking the same thing. If he starts he will have to make YUGE strides in the offseason.

What do you guys make of Kiffin saying Pruitt is the best DC in CFB?

We desperately need that to be true. We need an edge somewhere. He needs to win some he shouldn't this year and next to get serious fan buy-in/national attention after the Dooley and Jones debacles, and when he does that, recruiting can really take off.

I think Kiffin means it when he says it. I felt like he was at the top of the list regardless of what LK says.

Kiffin would likely know who the best d coordinator in college football is, since he's arguably the best offensive mind in the game. Don't think he's blowing smoke there.
