I met Gov. Haslam while I was in Iraq. He came through visiting TN National Guardsmen. His office even sent a really nice letter to my family. I will always have respect and a thankful heart for that gesture. However, if his family messes up our UT Football, I will be very very unhappy.

I want them destroyed. Gosh I hope they don't get power back. If this bill passes, I'm not sure how long Fulmer will be AD. If they find a way to oust him, and put some penny pinching, pencil neck, puppet of an AD in, Pruitt won't be around long IMO.

A lot of folks are still sorely underestimating the power the Haslams have right now. If we don't stop the FOCUS bill and all the other retaliatory measures aimed at UT we will have lost UT (the school and the athletic dept.). Haslam has sold off everything he can piecemeal to the highest bidder -- he did it with Knoxville properties, UT properties, and state properties and assets.

UT is the biggest pie he can get his hands on and if he does the entire system will be effected -- every campus, their assets and properties. All so he can make a profit and dole out 'prizes' in the form of land, service contracts, building contracts, and so on to his family and friends.

Stopping them is bigger than football but you can be sure football is a prize they want their hands on badly.

We need to write and call into the folks at 99.7 and get them mobilizing on this, they are very effective at squashing these type of things. Probably the only reason we don’t have a State Income Tax.

How do you think they view football? Do they not want to be elite? Just don't understand why anyone wouldn't want that.

DiPietro is retiring soon and doesn't want to be on the wrong side of the Haslam family. Davenport would be securing her own position by supporting it since Bill would then be appointing ALL of the trustees. Neither DiPietro nor Davenport are dumb -- they have their own self-interests in this.

If I understand it correctly, to me, the actual idea behind the bill doesn't sound like a bad idea. It's just who Haslam would appoint to the board. I'd have to think he'll appoint folks who he can control in order to push the family's agendas.

The sting of losing to Loyola is somewhat lessened by the fact that made it to the final 4 and may very well play in the championship game. I hope they win it all at this point.

The decision making process they have used to hire mens basketball coaches is the one they need to use when hiring a football coach.

So all that came to a head AFTER they offered him a new contract? Just doesn’t fly. Why would I put you on ignore? I would deprive myself of info from people who know people who heard of people who KNOW stuff! Pretty important connections. It’s no state secret that Coach Majors was difficult. Even in an age where every rumor or innuendo didn’t have an instantaneous outlet. I’m simply stating that your “knowledge” is buried in the middle of a muck of you and yours personal biases and general dislike. There would be someone in your zipcode that would take a different slant...narrative...whatever terminology you want to splat on the wall. So did Johnny bonk Mrs. Lacewell? Since I “asked for it”? :) No PROBLEMS brother! Try not to sound so outraged when you SCHOOL me. Don’t remember having a personal problem with you, but that’s getting harder to keep track of lately. When I get the gist that the vast majority of this board hates me (as 76 recently stated), I’ll gracefully exit stage right. I don’t disagree for effect. I disagree when I don’t accept someone’s else’s FACTS as my own.

I still love you man. :good!:

We’ll be the Browns of college football. F em all

And Haslem tried to shove Schiano down their throats and even their brass bucked. SMH, can’t figure out why Haslem had such a hard on for him.

And that's just one of the parallels that convinced me that all this Haslam stuff is more than just tin foil hat conspiracy theories.

With football I think they just want to control it. They think they know what's best and probably think that everyone not going along with them is the real problem. I think they have an entitlement attitude towards UT football because of Big Jim's days as a player and can't see that just because they grew up with something and it's important to their family that they don't own it and aren't the best people to lead it.

Most of us grew up with UT being important to us but that doesn't automatically make us experts when it comes to leading the football program or even qualified to try.

Yep, Tennessee's politicians are great at taking something that looks ok on paper and turning it into something that benefits them while screwing everyone else and the Haslams are one of the smartest families politically-speaking we've had when it comes to getting what they want while still managing to look good on the surface. I remember a few years ago when we were ranked the most corrupt state and folks in Louisiana couldn't believe it. I wish we had better from both sides but our parties are pretty rotten. The regular Janes and Joes of the state deserve better.

Agree, me too. This really is and interesting behind the scenes on how the corruptive properties of power and authority work.

Hegellian Dialect in action

Also, from reading through this stuff, you think Currie thought he had Mullen in the bag, and then Florida swooped in while he was in the Bahamas?

Bill Haslam has been a very solid governor, and Bredeson before him even more so. TN has actually enjoyed about 16 years of good leadership regardless of party affiliation, and the growth in the state is undeniable. KY, in contrast, has suffered through 16+ years of very poor leadership regardless of party affiliation. KY has also consistently ranked higher in state government corruption than TN according to most sources I've seen.

That said, things like the deal where Haslam wanted UT to outsource maintenance and custodial services under the guise of fiscal efficiency all the while owning a company sitting there waiting to receive the bid show me that they are ultimately interest in making $ for numero uno. The fact that others were able to stand up against that ploy gives me some hope though. Perhaps they can stand up to the FOCUS thing, or at least force some reasonable accommodations.
