Report: Austin Thomas not coming to UT. Staying at LSU

“Autonomy”. Thomas wanted complete control. Didn’t even have that at LSU. “So Tennessee” to not give a guy unprecedented control over a football program.
One Key Word that Killed Austin Thomas' Deal with Tennessee Football - A to Z Sports Nashville

So this guy wanted Tennessee to create a position with complete control over football where he’d have the final say, including coaching hires, over Pruitt and the AD just for him? A position he doesn’t even have now at LSU? With a 6 figure increase over what he made at LSU?

Ok.......

I mentioned that I barely knew about him but that he was very much liked by Coach O and LSU. I thought everything that was being said with him was being overblown though. So, when news started coming out that he would not be with the Vols, I didn't think that was a big deal either. Sounds like someone has been tooting their own horn too much, when I saw the news articles saying he was responsible for signing Fournette... I was laughing my ass off.

Not sure LSU takes him back this time, time will tell... doesn't sound like good odds.

He seems pretty arrogant for sure. It sounds like Tennessee may have dodged a bullet.

Sounded like he wanted to be the AD of football?

I saw that yesterday as well, this guy must think he's hot stuff if he really thought UT was going to give him complete control over the football program. That just sounds like an NCAA violation just waiting to happen.

Seems like Fulmer and Pruitt made the right choice here and dodged a bullet. He also is per the article not at LSU any more, they must have got tired of his crap and didn't want him back

Austin Thomas appears to be an asset, but I'm pretty confident there's several highly skilled and talented guys who can do that job, if UT wants it filled.

If there is any accuracy to the reporting in this story:

Then we should count ourselves fortunate that the UTAD decided it was not the right decision.

A to Z Sports has learned that Tennessee wanted Thomas to have a typical Director of Player Personnel role. It seems Thomas wanted to run the football program much like an NFL GM, getting autonomy in areas that Phil Fulmer and Jeremy Pruitt weren’t comfortable with giving up. Those areas could include staff hires and staff management, along with all player personnel responsibilities.

If true, uhm, what the hell? A guy making less than 200k a year wants to be in charge of staff hires and player personnel responsibilities?

How can he honestly even ask for that?

Giving that kind of control to someone who doesn't look like he played high school football wouldn't have been smart of Pruitt. Nor would have it given me confidence Tennessee hired the right guy

True, maybe he's worth it though. Who knows, but I don't blame Fulmer and Pruitt for feeling iffy on this one especially since they are just getting started.

From what I've seen of a few coaches like Orgeron and Kiffin, they need minders to keep them out of trouble. That's not going to fly with most coaches though; they can and will run the program.

This Decision should be Pruitt's - Why is Fulmer already Micro-Managing the Football Program- Pruitt runs & Manages the Football Program & Fulmer should just Hire/Fire Coaches & make sure they have all the resources they need- Once Again if Fulmer is making Staffing & Management Decision this will end in Total Disaster- Employees will be Loyal to Fulmer & he will undermine Pruitt. Pruitt should Hire 100% of his own staff & he determines their role in the program- First time a Big 4th Down Play Fails you'll have Fulmer then giving input on play calling - Too many Cooks Ruin the Food

Bingo. A new coach and a new AD shouldn't have to relinquish controls to a newly hired employee. I trust PF and CJP to run the program till they show me they can't. Thomas may have proven to be too many head cooks in the kitchen.

if that was the 'ultimatum'. exactly. no one would do that, and no one has in CFB

And with too many cooks in the kitchen, we'd sooner or later wind up with Secret Double Probation, and we don't want that again...!!

Yeah aint no way that is gonna fly. And I think people are overblowing his recruiting prowess. LSU doesnt need a guy like him to sign top 5 classes. It just needs a good coach.

In what sport does the head coach hire a general manager?
