New With @Brent_Hubbs...
As we noted in our mid-morning update, it's been a busy day in New York for Vols athletics director Phillip Fulmer and the Tennessee brass.
Tennessee flew Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to New York City for a second interview with Fulmer and the veteran assistants first conversation with Chancellor Dr. Beverly Davenport.
Fulmer and Steele visited in Georgia on Sunday in Fulmer's first face-to-face interview since he took over the search on Friday afternoon.
Steele wasn't the only second interview of the day for a coaching candidate, as Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker also flew to New York Tuesday morning where he met with Fulmer and Davenport, as well.
Sources tell VolQuest that Fulmer also worked the phones on Monday talking to other coaches as his search continues. One of those calls was to former Vol and National Champion quarterback Tee Martin. Martin and Fulmer had briefly spoken before Tuesday, but sources say the two had missed each other on the phone for multiple days, as Fulmer has been traveling and Martin has been recruiting. However, they did have an extended conversation on Tuesday and sources say Martin could be open to possibly making a move to Tennessee under the right circumstances.
One candidate who was not in New York on Tuesday was SMUs Chad Morris, who was conducing a bowl practice with his Mustangs team today. Fulmer interviewed Morris in Dallas on Sunday evening, but it appears the former Clemson OC is more in play at Arkansas right now.
There are some close to the search who suggest Tennessee hopes to get the hire made as early as Wednesday. This would fit Fulmers timeline, as hes told recruits hed have a head coach in place for a key OV weekend starting Friday.
Tonight, Tennessee's brass will be at the formal College Hall of Fame ceremony to watch Peyton Manning get inducted.
